I totally agree and I dont care about the excuses or reasons made by certain people as to why its "OK" for them to show their dogs in such extreme heat. IT IS cruel and putting show results before the welfare of the animals who dont have any choice in the matter. I fail to see how any dog or human can be better off at a show than at home resting and staying as cool as possible on days of extreme heat. I would like to see the extreme temperature rules come into effect at 35 or 36 degrees instead of 40. That is extreme! 5 degrees is a huge difference and does effect man and beast alike. Yes...40 C is extreme.........for those of us old enough to remember farenheit being used to measure temperature it's 104

I'm guessing you mean Rules 19.1.2, 19.1.2.1 & 19.1.2.2. These are the particular points under which we worked. We chose to move Junior Handlers to our July show and start the breed at the advertised time of 5.30pm, weather permitting. As it turned out, it was the correct decision and the show went ahead at the advertised time and with no problems. We also had to try to not disadvantage those exhibitors who had entered Sydney Kennel Club show which was scheduled to start at 8am on Sunday. Once again, I point out, that it is the Exhibitors choice as to whether they show their dogs or not. Whilst I appreciate the the GRA chose to "postpone" their meetings, I think there is a big difference between a dog running full bore around a track chasing a lure and a dog doing a lap around a small show ring at a trot. "Postpone" is the important word in this sentence. We would have been "cancelling" our show, not "postponing" it. Let's try looking at things from a different perspective. Let's say I'm a "working" dog exhibitor, I would be very upset if you chose to cancel the show without adhering to the rules of Dogs NSW. "Working" dogs should be able to "work" all day in any temperature and any conditions. Having shown working dogs myself, I know that this is the most important aspect when looking at a "working" dog. Does it look like it can work all day under any conditions? If it doesn't, then it is NOT a good example of the breed and we are, after all, supposed to be showing the "BEST" examples of the breed. I would also like to point out that whilst the Toys had approximately a 50% absentee rate, the working dogs had approximately 80% of those entered show their dogs. The point I was trying to make with quoting the Rules number was that under these rules there is the capacity to cancel prior to the show not just change the show time....which most people seem to think a show can be only cancelled if 40 degress is reached twice on the day of the show. With the GRA.......cancelled or postponed, my point there is.............they didn't want their dogs travelling in the heat, they didn't want their dogs racing in the heat on Saturday and that the lucky Greyhounds have air conditioned kennels when they get to the track, and I'm aware that they are dealing with smaller numbers and a bigger pool of funds for their facilities to be better.

Hi, Whilst I understand the show was run under the Rules of the Extreme Heat Policy.............the situation with the weather this week, with the predicted temperature of 40 degrees on Saturday being forecasted atleast 4 days prior and also knowing that the predicted temperatures leading to Saturday were in the high 30's........it was an oppurtunity to give Rule 19.1.2, 19.12.1, 19.12.2 a try out. It is interesting to note that the Greyhound Racing Authority postpone 4 meets on Saturday..... 2 being Wentworth Park and Richmond, they have air conditioned kennels at their tracks.........but postponed the meets due to animal welfare concerns. Not all areas in NSW suffered these temperatures, so it was left to the Stewards to make a decision in areas where the forecasted temperature where going to be in the high 30's. Considering the GRA are partly funded by income from the TAB....what a brave decision.

Hi, Apparrently the show is going ahead ....the committee had one temp reading at 40 then at 5.30 it was 39.9, 5.33 temp 39.5, 5.34 temp 39.6, 5.44 temp 39.7. So according to the heat policy all well to go ahead. This was posted on the OzShow........that .3 degrees in temp does make a big difference......nothing like promoting responsible dog ownership...NOT

What is the answer then? I'm not trying to be funny, it's a serious question. How would you stop people being rude? Hi, Dont know........you can't stop people being rude in general..........what I have found is quite often the person being rude is looking for a fight anyway, I just walk away, why give them what they want but if it's something trivial I do tell them to pull their heads or grow up. Trouble is, having been involved for a long time......you can pick these people anyway.......and I just avoid them, these type of people do not have enough quality to be in my life anyway.

Hi, There is a hugh misconception that just because you have the same breed, that most people in your chosen breed will be warm, fuzzy, friendly, welcoming and encouraging..... well this is true to the point of someone being beaten......then it can get seriously plain and ugly. Obviously the problem isn't with the new people but the old exhibitors who feel their turf is being threaten...........my answer to this when I was a new exhibitor was to cut these people dead, I just stopped talking to them. The people who did this to me were always the ones who came up being so called friendly but always has some tacky back handed comment. The majority of friends I have do not have my breed and I had to sifted through a fair bit of chaff to find my breed mentors. I remember being extremely upset and in tears after another tacky comment from the same exhibitor who always did this.....someone from my breed came up to me and said.........'listen, dont worry, dog showing is a hobby , a past time it doesn't take you to the Olympics and it is not for a sheep station, and would you invite that person to your house for dinner, if the answer is no, why bother having anything to do with them.......you dont have to like someone just because they have the same breed'. With 30+ years experience, now, I give people a couple of chances first, if you are fair and polite to me, I'll be the same to you, also if anything comes back to me via gossip I front these people immediately. I have had alot of fun showing dogs, made lots of good friends.........dog showing seems to concentrate on the negative...........we always remember the bad things, and I think if we analysed our time in the hobby there are more good times than bad..........even when your new and yes some degree of hardening up does have to happen, but this happens with experience also.

Hi, I love my Oztrail compact...it's light, easy to put up and pull down. There is enough room for 3 large crates. I also peg the frame and use the ropes. I can put it up by myself and what makes this job easier is to peg one of the frame legs in, then you can pull the frame out (it's like having a person hold the frame leg). If leaving the cabana overnight at the grounds I always drop the height down to the lowest and re- secure the ropes. The other thing that has made life so much easier is, I have just bought a dog trolley and don't know why I didn't do this years ago.

VCA do have a Rule Book I've had a quick look can't find anything about Runners....not saying it's not there though could be under another section other than Show. Had a look at the regs re: Stewarding....cant find anything there either. Where is the written proceedure which tells everyone what to do and if it does exist why is it so hard to find. If the only Rule that governs Runners is the double handling rule and or the only people allowed in the ring rule, it just clearly isn't good enough. I'm glad that in NSW all this is very clear, you might not agree with the proceedure of having to get Certificates etc but atleast it's in the Rule Book and easy to find and very clear. Not open to interpretation which only causes confusion. Off my soap box now...lol. I've been involved in few different sport at State and National level as an Official..........what really annoys me is people who have never read the rule book but think they know the rules or don't check the rules before making a comment or telling someone what the rule is.......... and Rule books that dont give you enough info or that are not kept current with amendments or up to date.

CC- What is the Use of Runner Rules number in the VCA Rule Book, I would like to look it up, this has made me curious now. I guess the real problem here is the lack of clear Rules, proceedure and willingness to making things a bit easier, you seem to have in Victoria covering Runners and a Disabled handler, which in this era of anti discrimination I find very surprising.

I interpret 7.6.21 to be the double handling rule which is breached when there is more than one handler per dog in the ring: CC We have the same rules in NSW as 7.6.28, 7.6.21 and rules for runners .......and the use of a runner isn't double handling. Our rules state that at the change over the of handlers, the first handler must move to the perimeter of the ring and there is to be no communication or hand signaling. Medical cert and permission to use a runner must be applied for and given by DNSW and a copy of this sent with your entries. We have people in wheel chairs showing dogs with no one ever complaining about double handling. Double handling is the deliberate use of an outside person to attract the dogs attentiion and is a totally different. If the VCA have Rules specifically for the use of Runners for Disabled handlers then these Rules take precedence over the double handling Rule as they refer to a specific circumstance.

It's a VCA rule to be implemented at the ring by the steward. If we start having Show Secretaries getting involved it will get more difficult, as their opinions would still be subject to the VCA rule. If it's a VCA rule where can I find it? What is the point of a rule if exhibitors are unable to find it in the organizations published rules and regs? Hi, My suggestion would be to ring the VCA and find out if there is a rule and where do you find it in the Rule Book eg the Chapter number. Get a copy of it. You do not have to take this to Club Secretary level. Just tell the Steward at the start of your breed that you use a runner, if you need any medical cert etc present them and if there are any further question give the Steward a copy of the relevant page out of the Rule Book. I truly think you wont need to do this........but it's best to be prepared.

Hi, I was going to suggest Navy or Khaki in green not taupe. There are plenty of nice sports jackets that come with a fine pin stripe, it wont distract from the dog but looks classy. With Navy you could have lemon, mauve or even pale pink shirts. If this is for a Speciality and an O/S judge definately a tie should be worn. Also shoes that match the trousers looks smarter ie black shoes with Navy, Tan shoes with Khaki, Brown shoes with brown etc. Have fun shopping. Cheers

If she did end up tjhe only one in her class then you would have to go in for the challenge. Then if she's the only one how would she react if the judge refuses the CC ? Listening to comments by some judges there are many breeds that have exhibits with incorrect mouths. You just need to be fully aware that going in the ring with an obvious fault handicaps you right from the start. cheers Hi, Does your Agi show dog section have Junior Handler classes? If so this could be the solution to your problem....the dog would have to be entered in it's breed class.........but it doesn't have to be shown in this class. Then let your daughter take the dog in the Handler class. Get some help and training for your daughter before the show so she is a little bit more prepared as to what will happen. Good Luck

Hi, I handle a Gundog who has had an accident and lost an incisor. The owner not only hast a Vet letter but also the tooth. What I have noticed is some judges will forgive the missing tooth whilst others wont accept it at all. Usually the forgiving judges will ask what happened. So it a case of you just have to take your chances. Though I probably wouldn't show this dog under a European FCI judge as they tend to take tooth counting very seriously

Hi, Good comment Ash.......how many of these pups will end up breeding anyway, how many are in pet homes and been desexed.......all that is heard about this dog is gloom and doom about how he is affecting the genetic diverisity of Vislas. The dog has a good 'open pedigee' (JH owns words) Also another question to ask is, who are the dams....if JH is so worried about Yogi being used......I'm sure all his pups haven't come from the one line of dams. The fact that this dog has won in England IMO is a miracle, he is a wonderful Vizsla but the English breeders/judges tend to close ranks around their own. So it is a true testament to this dog's quality that he has been able to brake through the English 'old school tie' network. I think it's a bit early yet to say the world is coming to an end for Vizsla breeding in the UK. Yogi has created interest in imports, so this could be a good thing......motivating people to import of Vizsla to introduce to the gene pool and open the gene pool further. And as a byline......after the Crufts win Yogi has now been retired.

Hi, Ok, I can do a comparision BUT I'm not talking about each breed on a whole. My sister had GSP's which I ended boarding for her, so I had two GSP's and 2 Pointers in the yard at same. The morning greeting was always a boisterous thing, the Pointers would gently jump, lift themselves on me.....the GSP's would knock me flat, they would spin whirlies behind me and take me knees out from under me. This was ok........but I would get this greeting every time I walked out the door. It was if they had no memory that they had seen me only half an hour ago........very funny. I guess both breeds are people dogs, I just found the GSP's little more boisterous and rougher.

Is there an issue with dogs being timid in some lines or is it just some individual dogs are naturally more shy than others? I am also trying to get my head round size never having met one in the flesh, anyone got a pic say with a more common breed of dog like a lab (pointeeblab?) or BC or similar. Is there a significant difference between bitches and dogs. Also anyone got any other nice pics of solids, I know it is really terribly shallow but I love the solids! Hi, Temperment, on the whole would be an individual thing. This applies to all breeds and can also be effected by enviroment and the owner. Some dogs are just more confident than others. Pointers should never be timid though, according to the standard they should have "a kind, even disposition". Pointer height according to the standard is Dogs 63-69cm (25-27in) Bitches 61-66cm (24-26in). So compared to a Lab they are 4-5in taller, though they are better compared to the other pointing type breeds. Pointers are taller than GSPs and Vizslas and about the same size as a English Setter or Wei, though obviously the body types are different. With solids, go to the Solivia Pointers website. They have beautiful photos and a very good article explaining the genetics of the solid colour.
