Well we had an attendance of over 7360 at the Bungendore show according to the local rag. Horse numbers are huge here and neighbouring ACT has more horses per capita than any other state, so it is no wonder horse numbers are increasing. We always have a good turn out of cattle and sheep, and Sunday was no exception. Alpacas were included for the first time this year, but I don't know the numbers. (I was at the races and didn't go to the show this year). By all accounts there were a lot of Dachsunds on the grounds although not all competed; all the dog novelty events were popular with the crowd and had large entries; the sheep herding demonstration was as popular as ever as we have some very accomplished sheep dogs and handlers here. Sorry this is a bit off topic, but I wanted to point out that in our area at least, although on the periphery to a Capital city, interest in animal events is growing. Such a shame, then, that the Show Committee being short on space ditched the dogs in favour of more horses - it is an ideal opportunity to put the spotlight on the purebred dog. Incidentally a two day dog show was held two weekends prior to the show and attracted as many entries as they used to get on show day with over 500 entries each day! So in our case, we just need more room and bigger grounds to accommodate everyone!

I think you should look at getting a rescue dog, purely for the fact that if you look hard enough and are savvy enough with your research you may find a dog that is being fostered under similar conditions to what you can provide. Not all foster carers stay at home all day or work part time. You'll have to be patient, however, as a lot of rescue organisations do not rehome to single dog homes nor to people who work long hours. However, there are dogs out there that are happy or better off being single dogs, you've just got to take the time to find the right match. As a footnote, with regard to German Pinschers, I think angelsun on here breeds them?

Yes, I was surprised about that. There are several events for pet dogs and a high jump competition, both of which always draw big entries and are popular with the general public. It does seem however, that the gap in interest between purebred dogs and novelty events for pets is forever widening

It's a bit of fun for pets! Obi Wan is a Bungendore resident and all proceeds from this event which is part of the Bungendore show goes to Dachshund Rescue. Sometimes they don't even break out of a trot but stop to sniff the enticing smells :laugh:

It sounds typical of thyroid issues, do a search on this part of the forum and also google Dr Jean Dodds. The Hemolife tests are much more sensitive than tests that are available here; there are quite a few DOLers that have sent blood samples to Dr Jean Dodds.... The turbines in Scottsmum's photograph look to be above the main tree line, likewise the ones that march across the NSW Southern Tablelands, where it is too exposed and windy for most trees to thrive. When you get within one or two kilometres of them and there are light winds they make a rhythmic noise like a washing machine drum turning on a wash cycle. When it is windy you actually have to get within a couple of hundred metres to hear them as the wind makes more noise than the turbines.

Blocks of land are getting smaller, houses are getting bigger and a lot of them have no yard to even hang the washing out let alone have room for a dog Also where can you walk them these days? I live in rural residential NSW, and even I am faced with the problem of developers buying up land and building on the site of walks I have enjoyed for the last 28 years
