Have you tried Bowen therapy? I swear by Bowen for both myself & my animals. Whereabouts are you in Victoria? PM me if you wish, & I will try & locate an animal practioner for you.

My kelpie, 20kg, gets 5ml daily to support a compromised immune system. He has pemphigus, which is akin to lupus. When he is on steroids he gets 10ml per day to help combat the nasty side of the steroids. The advantage of flax seed oil over fish oils is there is no danger of overdosing on vitamin A.

Homeopathic Vaccines
trifecta replied to First Time Puppy Owner's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
One of my dogs also has a compromised immune system; he has pemphigus, akin to lupus. He was known to be vaccinated upon adoption from the pound at 10 months. I have been strongly advised by two independent vets to NEVER revaccinate. I am assured he will have adequate immunity for his entire life & his immune system does not need to be further stressed by vaccinations. -
An associate of mine has a 6 month old puppy who has regressed in her toilet training. We have chatted about crate training & I have explained the basics, but just wondered if anyone knew of any good links to crate training that I can pass on to this gentleman for reference?

There are three Suffolk sheep & one skanky Merino at Queanbeyan pound, available to the highest tender. As the price of sheep is now high, wondered if anyone was looking for a few cheapies for a small property or for herding practice?

Have to agree with you fifi, in fact my homoeopathic vet told me to stay away from them particularly with dogs with allergies.

All I can say is administer kelp with great care, it is very easy to overfeed. Excess iodine intake inhibits thyroid hormone synthesis & is toxic. When working as an equine vet nurse seaweed meal was one of the most common causes of feed related toxicity as many horse people choose to offer it free choice.

Insect Repellant On Open Wounds?
trifecta replied to saintlysusan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Septicide is another product which is good for open wounds & contains pyrethrin to stop the flies... I used to use this on my GSD's ears. The purple colour of Cetrigen is nothing more than Gentian violet! -
Importantly fish oil can be overdosed due to vitamin A content whereas flax / linseed oil cannot. This is why flax seed oil is recommended for skin conditions where daily dosing is optimum.

My dogs are on a BARF diet so faeces are nice & solid. I use heavy duty rubber gloves to pick up faeces & then dispose of them at the tip. I collect every day in a bucket if possible & put in a garbage bag / horse feed bag until I have enough to warrant a trip to the tip

I knew the Pawman when he was in Canberra. He is an excellent dog handler, especially with agression issues, & moreover, he is himself, very personable. Being a trainer of Military Police Dog handler instructors he is adept at teaching. He also has heaps of experience with pet dogs & their owners, often being called upon by my vet to help clients with behavioural problems.

Lilli, have you tried leading him in a bridle? Carry a dressage whip in your left hand & just use it to tap him up where he stops, to maintain forward movement. If he then tries to rush in front of you, just carry the whip in your left hand about a third of the way down, but across the front of your body, a gentle tap on the nose with the handle if he tries to move past your shoulder should bring him back into line. If this is not effective I would graduate to using a stallion chain on a well fitting head collar. Feed the clip end through the near side ring & loop the chain once around the nose band before clipping to the off side ring. This prevents the chain from slipping too far down the nose, it is most effective on the bridge of the nose. It is effective & you can use the dressage whip has described above. For an experienced handler, an anti-rearing bit would be the way to go. However this bit must be fitted & used correctly, otherwise damage to the jaw can be sustained.

Chicken is full of omega 6. Feed carcases, wings or necks as a main constituent of the diet & supplement a can of sardines twice a week to balance omega 3. Alternatively there is a product called Megaderm which can be added to the food. It is for dogs with dry, flaky, itchy skin; but I would be making chicken the main constituent of the diet.

I would be seeking out a Bowen therapist! You are lucky in that the main large & small animal Bowen centre is at Eumundi, so there should be several therapists you can choose from. Contact Ali Goward for more info 07 5442 8733.

Audrey, the product is designed to be fed as part of a BARF diet. Bruce Syme strongly advocates the feeding of raw meaty bones. I find it very useful when I haven't the time to pulp vegetables. Tiggy, sounds like your dogs could benefit with a little natural yoghurt!

Only just noticed this, juice, but hugs to you & your family.

I have found few supplements taht have worked for my dogs... & I believe it is because they are on BARF diets, so have already been consuming good amounts of cartilage, minerals etc. I have never really needed to introduce such supplements until they were well into their teens, & I am talking about large & working breeds here, ie GSD, BSD, Kelpie x. So for me diet is the main safeguard against arthritis. One which did seem to work better than the others I tried, is 'Glucosamine Plus' made by Science Products. It contains glucosamine, chondroitin, green lipped muscle, manganese ascorbate & MSM. It is in tablet form & is cheaper than a lot of products, 60 tablets $18.95.

Anyone Tried To Get A Urine Sample?
trifecta replied to rugerfly's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep, most vets I have worked with use a frying pan! -
Please DO NOT rub anything into the wound, as the vet may need to use the wound site to identify the snake from the venom. The most important thing with snakebite is to keep the dog still & calm, & carefully strap the limb if the dog has been bitten on the leg. Unfortunately some dogs who are seemingly treated successfully with antivenene die due to other complications associated with the kidneys & liver. Some dogs, know a Springer here in my town, can be bitten on several different occasions & still survive! The local vet here years ago was a very compassionate lady & if people could not afford the antivenene she would sleep with sedated cats & dogs on drips on her bed. You would be surprised how many came through, especially cats, who would sleep for five days, wake up, shake themselves & be as right as rain!

Kennel cough dose rates for Benadryl three times daily: < 5kg = 1ml 6-10kg = 2ml 11-15kg = 3ml 16-20kg = 4ml 21-30kg = 5ml 31-40kg = 6ml

Revolution is the only spot on that is effective against sarcoptic mange... & personally I feel it lacks fire power & works too slowly. I cannot wait 3 weeks or so for the mites to die while the dog is self mutilating from itching I usually use Neocort to fix hot spots as it works quickly & stops the dog from itching as it contains lignocaine. However with the mange lesions I have used paw paw salve & have found it to be really effective.

Always have a thermometer handy! If you think a puppy is off colour, take its temperature. Record details of your dogs' temperatures, heart rates, pulse rates, gum colour & respiratory rate when they are normal so that you have an indication when things are not right
