Nsw To Ban Greyhound Racing From July 2017
trifecta replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in In The News
Article in the SMH today discusses the timing of Baird's decision. Malcolm Turmoil wouldn't have stood a chance if the decision had been announced before the election. Also mentions the point I made earlier about appeasing the minor parties in the aftermath of the election and shoring up allegiances in order to form a Government. http://www.smh.com.au/sport/timing-of-mike-bairds-decision-to-ban-greyhound-racing-in-nsw-politically-motivated-20160707-gq0x2t.html -
Bit off topic, Maree, but I think I know who you mean, and this news will mean we will lose one of the only independently owned pet shops that does not and never has sold live animals. We will also lose our supplier of affordable fresh meat for our dogs as I don't think the owner will continue with his pet business. So what people may ask? Well this will impact on boarding kennels, vets and pet owners in the Queanbeyan/ Canberra region who rely on this supplier. Furthermore the big trainers with multi million dollar set ups will move interstate while the hobby owners will not be able to afford to.....so the little man gets shafted again. NSW has 8000 participants in greyhound racing and employs 2000 people. That's a lot of jobs. Then what will happen to the tax dollar? NSW gets $300m dollars per year from greyhound racing turnover countrywide - is the Government now going to refuse revenue from interstate racing bodies? Gah, it's such a mess, when you start thinking about the wider ramifications. I don't think it's been thought through at all.

Obviously you are not from NSW, westiemum! The man is a right wing dictator who has his eyes set on Canberra and most likely leadership, in time, of the Federal Liberal Party. There are 65 greyhound tracks in the country, 33 in NSW. In our regional towns and cities, and particularly in Sydney, the greyhound tracks sit on valuable land that developers have been trying to get their hands on for decades. This is nothing more than a land grab and what makes it more obvious is that other states are not following suit. The exception is the ACT which has followed NSW. Coincidence that they have been trying to move the greyhound club off the land at Symonston for sometime and that they have also expressed a desire to resume the land at Thoroughbred Park?

Shutting down greyhound racing yet allowing the live export of sheep and cattle to continue - yep, they are appeasing the animal rights groups. I never said they were appeasing animal rights if anything I believe it is because they want the land of Wentworth track (one newspaper stated that the kings school has previously put in a tender for the land to build a sports arena). I'm not sure why you think I said that. I clearly say that there are some people who think that this is a win for major animal rights groups and because they have banned greyhound racing to continue on pushing on the back of this for an end to the stated above. On another note I'll ask again does anyone know how this will affect lure coursing with greyhounds? --Lhok I didn't think you said that Lhok! Sorry I was in a hurry and should have said this will go some way to appease animal rights groups and take the heat off the live export industry. I know it is different governments being State versus Federal but they are both Liberal and the ACT is a poor excuse for a Labor Government. Interestingly, South Australia is not going to ban greyhound racing. -

I agree, I don't think he's done this for the dogs. And to say that tracks will be resumed and used as open space for public amenity - is that a core or non core promise? -

Typical hypocrisy from dictator Baird. Do you really think he is interested in the perceived welfare aspects? The NSW Government just wants to get its hands on the tracks so that they can develop the land. Wentworth Park is the jewel in the crown but there are other tracks in regional centres they have been trying to get their hands on for years. This will rip the heart out of many country towns. -

Wow, it would be fantastic to do something like that! I find horses not the easiest of animals to photograph. -
Getting Weight Onto A Super Skinny Dog
trifecta replied to flea's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Lamb flaps and necks, but brisket bones really stack the weight on. -
I think the fact that suburbia is a lot more crowded these days has a lot to do with it. The blocks are getting smaller while the houses are getting bigger so there is now no room for the pet dog. The days of a first home on a quarter acre block are long gone, and as another poster observed many more people are renting these days as buying a home is simply out of reach for a lot of people.

Another vote from me for 4cyte. My Belgian girl has been on it for a bit over a month now after it was strongly recommended by her veterinary chiropractor. Apparently, 4cyte is one of the few supplements which has performed well in clinical trials. Previously she had been on straight green lipped muscle capsules and fish oil. However, she is much improved on 4cyte although I have had to keep her on the elevated loading dose. She still gets fish oil of course.

For All The Unethical (But Responsible) Dog Owners ...
trifecta replied to Willem's topic in General Dog Discussion
If you had done a search, Willem, you would have gleaned that is the concensus on DOL - there have been many discussions on the pros and cons of desexing on this forum over the years. But you would have known that from your penchant for googling as the discussions show up in searches. Instead you choose to be inflammatory and confrontational, well that's your choice, but I won't be drawn in and neither will many others who probably have valuable contributions to make to discussions. -
I don't think you can go past Hogan Leather for quality at good prices. They are in US so you need to get a quote for shipping. I have found them friendly and efficient. https://www.hoganleather.com/ My niece who is a dog trainer in UK and has lurchers likes these: http://www.hideandcollars.co.uk/

I feel somewhat guilty, seeing as I started the challenge, in confessing I am way behind and do not feel able to continue..... at least for the time being. I seem to be lurching from crisis to crisis at the moment and have no time to even pick up the camera I do pop in from time to time to admire everyone's pics and hope that you will all make it to the end. Snook, I hope Justice is going well with his recovery and will be back to his old self in next to no time

What Temp Do You Rug Your Dog Up?
trifecta replied to Two Best Dogs!'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Just wanted to make mention of the fact it is length of daylight hours that influences coat. If your dog spends quite a lot of time inside under artificial light (ie early mornings and particularly evenings/ nights) then it is not going to grow as much of a winter coat as a dog that lives outside and spends longer hours in darkness. -
Feed outside after dark when the wasps have gone to bed. Don't worry about soil, leaves and stuff sticking to the meat.....it's all part of feeding raw :D

More to the point how did you stop the goat from eating Marvellous?

Juice, Bruce Syme, ie Vets All Natural, make a supplement which you could add to the mince portion of her diet if she doesn't like the texture of the muesli. However, does she really need a supplement? With raw meaty bones, chicken feet, eggs, sardines, a little offal and roo mince together with some pulped or even steamed vegetables she will be getting all her requirements.

Tetanus Shot After Dog Licked Open Wound?
trifecta replied to KerryTy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Really? 18 months ago I was bitten on the hand by a mare protecting her foal. The first thing I was asked when presenting at emergency was when was my last tetanus shot? Yes, I agree tetanus is unlikely in the OP's scenario, but it shouldn't be taken lightly. It is a serious bacterial disease which is easily preventable. I have seen tetanus in a neighbour's horse about 25 years ago now, it wasn't a nice death -
Ooh lighthouse please! Something in the vein of Jean Guichard's "Phare de la La Jument" comes to mind
