  1. Just for you fordogs :) This is my niece's lurcher who came from Southern Lurcher Rescue. Winston was chipped as Greyhound/ Collie/ Bedlington x.
  2. I can't believe Jack Hargreaves is still around  He looked an old man when I used to watch 'How' on kids' TV 45 years ago Thanks for that Kirislin, you've unwittingly taken me back to my childhood - JH, lurchers & all!
  3. Welcome to the forum :D I would advise shooting off a PM to MEH. She is on this message board & does Great Dane rescue. I am sure she would help.
  4. I never feed weight bearing bones, including roo tail - they are too hard - at best cause teeth to wear down & at worst lead to slab fractures of the tooth. I feed chicken carcases or wings every other day, brisket bones & whole rabbit occasionally, but best of all I (& the dogs) like lamb breast bones & shoulder blades. They are lovely soft, cartilage type bones. Staffyluv, make friends with your butcher or head out to the Fyshwick markets :D
  5. Not sure if you have had a reply to this request, but if not, I think Stefie comes from that part of the coast. You could try shooting off a PM to her :)
  6. Dog speed, Taz though I bet you thought you were already at the bridge when Jane took you under her wing.
  7. The OES thread in breed sub-forums has expired, so I am posting here instead :) There is an OES currently impounded & for sale at Queanbeyan pound. The website is here then click on animals for sale. She is an older girl & not desexed. Hope someone with breed experience can help find her an appropriate home! ETA Queanbeyan is in NSW just across the border from ACT / Canberra.
  8. Putting this request up in the photography forum on DOL wouldn't go astray - many people do not come into rescue.
  9. You must be joking - I actually took the victims of a car theft to the police station a couple of years back - their two Maremmas just stood in the yard barking while a couple of youths drove up to the homestead went inside & removed the keys to a Landcruiser that were hanging on a nail near the back door. By the time the landowner got back down to the house from milking to see what the commotion was, vehicle & spare cash lying around in the kitchen had gone! The Landcruiser was located two days later - full of stolen goods.
  10. You'll have to change your DOL username - with a moniker like 'alpinecool' no wonder you have cold water tail
  11. Hi Bush Chook, welcome to the forum! For Belgian chit chat, head to the breed sub forum here, although it is not as active as the other breeds (afterall we are all busy with our dogs ), hopefully someone from Sydney may see your question..... obviously your pup is not from a Sydney breeder. Mad Woofter on here is a Sydneysider with a Groenendael boy - maybe shoot her a PM & ask who she recommends? Sorry can't be of more help!
  12. Dear Rozzie, I have only just read your sad news. I am sorry for your loss, I know you will miss Mandrake profoundly. My favourite quote, addressed not to a Belgian, but fitting all the same: "Here one day would stand a giant among dogs, powerful as a timberwolf, lithe as a cat, as dangerous to foes as an angry tiger; a dog without fear or treachery; a dog of uncanny brain and great lovingly loyal heart and, withal, a dancing sense of fun. A dog with a soul." - Albert Payson Terhune from 'Lad, a Dog'.
  13. We have a breeder in our little town. She also has Lhasa, the big guys seem to get on well with their smaller counterparts. Yes, they do have lots of hair & need ongoing socialising, not just as pups & adolescents. Can be barky in town, I know the neighbours sometimes have issues with them & they can be heard from some distance away when they get going! Also the property is double fenced - if they happen to transgress the first fence, then they are still enclosed by the boundary fencing, likewise it is difficult for anyone to enter the property 'accidentally'. To sum up... a lot of dog & a lot of work.... & probably a lot of money, too
  14. Not sure if this is helpful to anyone but I have a D80, it easily fits in my Porteen bag with an 18-200mm lens attached :)
  15. So have you been out west, Alyosha, or just been on roo shoots with the local red necks?
  16. As AA says, kangaroos are shot & transferred to refrigerated transport in the field, then taken to the abbatoir for processing. These abbatoirs process game meat (for human cosumption) for both the domestic & international market. There are abbatoirs in western NSW & western Queensland. The one at Blackall was in the news about 6 months ago http://www.abc.net.au/rural/news/content/201107/s3275273.htm
  17. This is not always the case. Some vendors of roo meat buy direct from the shooters, others, like my supplier buy roo from the abbatoirs, where it has been inspected & handled properly. It is pet grade but comes out of the abbatoirs that process kangaroo for human consumption.
  18. I know quite a few greyhound trainers; all include roo in their dogs' diets; a couple of the trainers have city class & Group placed / winning racing dogs too.
  19. From memory, tomato plants are the same family as deadly night shade, so yes, care should be taken to limit ingestion of both the fruit & plant parts.
  20. lavendergirl, I have a client who feeds no meat to her two dogs, however they do get a weekly marrow bone. Both her dogs are now getting on in years & when she took them to our local vet practice for an annual check-up, the vet (who was new) commented on their spritely demeanour & obvious good health. He was gobsmacked when she answered his question as to their diet with "principally vegetarian"! I would loved to have been a fly on the wall, this is a practice that heavily promotes Hill's!
  21. I no longer feed roo tail, the bones are hard like weight bearing bones & have resulted in a slab fracture of a large molar in one of my dogs. I pay $4.95/kg for diced or minced roo. While it is pet grade, it has been processed in an abbatoir & refrigerated in the field. I can buy it cheaper, but the vendor purchases it straight from the local shooters - it is not refrigerated in the field & I have found all sorts of things in there..... stubby caps, cigarette butts etc! I also feed VAN. Found a supplier who sells the 15kg bag for $145 - this is really good value! I do not rely on one protein source, the dogs get chicken carcases & wings, lamb shoulder blades & flaps, plus whole rabbit (sometimes they even catch their own!
  22. t, I use this method too. Alternatively if you have a long lead you can swing the end with your right hand (if dog is on your left) like a pendulum in front of the dog or use a circular motion like a lassoo. This will stop it from pulling & automatically puts the dog in the right position with its shoulder at your leg. Immediately she is in position make sure to treat her. I would also use a 'watch' or 'look' command, lure her with a treat, to get Ellie walking beside you & looking up at you for direction. Personally I don't like haltis, a dog can too easily flip over & do cervical spine damage.
  23. A timely warning to those holidaying on the South Coast of NSW to make sure you can recognise symptoms of paralysis tick bites in your pets. Two local dogs have died in just the last week. If you are unsure, please talk to your vet.
