  1. I would be looking at diet. I'm a firm believer in attacking from the inside out not just topically! However, too much washing can overstimulate the sebaceous glands so another alternative would be a chamomile tea rinse made famous by DOLer Erny
  2. OK, the anglicised spelling is Tervueren which is roughly how it is spoken. The Belgian municipality from which the dog get its name is Tervuren, which is why you will see two ways of spelling. This is a good pronunciation (by a Spanish speaker!) http://www.forvo.com/word/tervuren/ I can't type phonetically on this keyboard neither can I do umlauts, but vu is a sort of chewed sound  ter-vyu'ren is the closest I can get! Laekenois is as Hockz stated lak-in-wah, though a Flemish speaker may flatten the 'a' sound like an 'a' with an umlaut, sounding like 'ae'.
  3. Probably not many people go into the photography thread so I would like to blow Rainers trumpet. Rainers posted this a couple of weeks ago: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/253308-our-old-boy-ryan/ ETA: US Publisher Alpine Publications are having 'Old Dog Month' in recognition of old dogs. You can send in a photo & get a voucher, they publish non fiction dog & horse books. There are details on their facebook page :)
  4. Dachshund is a combination of Dachs (meaning badger) & Hund (dog) phonetically 'Dax-hoond'. Have a listen here - this is easier than explaining phonetically :) http://www.forvo.com/word/dachshund/ The link is interesting as my ear can pick up a slight variation in the pronunciation of the two male speakers.
  5. If it is a dog that needs rehoming you could try postering it on the local rescue e-mail network, provided it is desexed or will be upon rehoming. PM Burkes to find out more :)
  6. I think you buy those Belgium Shepherds from the same kennel as the Burmese Mountain Dogs, right?. Yes they have Dashhounds too!
  7. I think this site explains it quite well, BJ http://www.lowchenclubofcanada.com/low4.html The way most people say Lowchen is the anglicised version as explained in the above. I probably say it differently, having a knowledge of German. For instance I would say German Spitz as 'schpitz' & I say Schnauzer as 'schnowtser' - as you know the German 'z' is prounced 'tz'. As for Groenendael, which I have, I feel a bit of a pedantic twat pronouncing it in Flemish / Dutch with the guttural 'gr' http://www.forvo.com/word/groenendael/ so I just use the anglicised version 'GROAN-en-darl' Getting back to breeds with German names, it is amazing how many Germanic breeds there are: Affenpinscher Dachshund Dobermann (German & Miniature) Pinscher German Spitz (Mittel & Klein) Large Munsterlander Leonberger Lowchen Pomeranian (E. Germany / N. Poland) Poodle (Pudel) not French as we are lead to believe! Rottweiler Schnauzer Weimaraner ..... I am sure there are others :)
  8. Bretagne is the noun, ie proper name for Brittany, whereas Breton is the adjective, or a person (or thing) native to Brittany :D Also, I have to take issue with some of the pronunciations of Lowchen posted here, it is actually German for 'little lion' & would have an umlaut over the 'o' in German making it 'lurv- chen'. The 'chen' part (a diminutive in the German language) is difficult to explain phonetically.... it comes from the throat & is not really 'shen' but that's the closest I can get without getting into the uvular & the velar unvoiced fricative
  9. I would try one of the Beauty & the Bees pet shampoo bars http://www.beebeauty.com/lifestyle/pet-shampoo-bars followed by a leave in rinse of apple cider vinegar diluted in warm water (1-2 tablespoons acv per litre of water). However, the best way to get rid of itchiness & dry skin is to attack it internally - we are what we eat!
  10. Mainly every day for us, although in snake season & very hot weather free running sometimes has to be curtailed. We are lucky to own acreage but having spelling Thoroughbreds on agistment I do not let the dogs run willy nilly over the property, plus, there is the risk of snakes, particularly around dams where the dogs would like to wallow! So we take to the local trails which do not have much dog traffic. Frequently I drop OH 10-15 km out of town & he will walk back with the dogs...... the longer hikes reserved for the weekends. Living on the Southern Tablelands we have some favourite spots where we like to take the dogs to run & swim in waterholes along the rivers..... our favourite place, for dogs & people is at a waterfall about 50km from here..... sorry I cannot divulge where it is..... ..... but it is magical!
  11. Rainers, I think I have commented upon your dog photography before? I look at a lot of dog portaiture but I think you have a special talent, you have more than captured the special bond between dog & girl
  12. You may like to browse Dr Kate Millhouse's website. She is located in Canberra but may be able to offer you a long distance consultation via skype.
  13. Yes, but is it for fun, or are there other motivations behind the behaviour we call play? Appeasement, perhaps, or maintaining relationships? Sorry, perse, I have quoted you twice, not picking on your posts, but finding it difficult to put my train of thought into words :)
  14. Souff, this is DOL statement of the year for me. It is something that everyone of us, not just airlock, should be mindful of at all times!
  15. I totally agree with you, persephone Why do owners think their dogs need to play? Is the interaction between strange dogs & even adult pack members really play in the context that we as humans interpret play? This is a genuine question & I don't pretend to know the answer as I am not a behaviourist, however I believe we are reading behaviours as 'play' when they are in fact behaviours which are precursors to aggressive, predatory or sexual encounters. I have two 9 year old dogs, they occasionally 'play' with one another to sort out some perceived inequality in pack dynamics, but it is not what I would term 'play' more the rumbling that WW refers to. They certainly never play with dogs outside of their pack & have never shown an interest in this, as a unit they are totally self contained.
  16. You could also report to your local ranger if it is taking too long to get action from RSPCA.
  17. Here you go http://www.beebeauty.com/lifestyle/pet-shampoo-bars & you can follow up with this for a final rinse http://www.beebeauty.com/hair-care/shop-by-product/conditioners/apple-cider-and-herb-conditioning-rinse or any old apple cider vinegar diluted will do :)
  18. This is well documented in horses. If colts are habitually chastised for being 'interested' around mares many are reluctant to serve when placed at stud. I have had stallions who know the rearing bit is for serving but the bridle is for working.
  19. Have to agree with Rozzie, looks all Kelpie to me. Our red & white boy was 11kg when we adopted him from the pound aged around 7 months, he has never topped more than 17kg. Have also had an adult foster at maximum 13kg. Kelpies are very varied in height & weight. She is lovely, hope she can help fill the void in your Dad's heart :)
  20. She is well away from the fires. Thanks Rozzie!
  21. Helen, you have such a way with words. You always encapsulate my sentiments beautifully :) I have no other words, Jelly, but you & Roo are in my thoughts Take time & take care of yourself - you are a special person.
  22. Does anyone know how Andrea (Companions For Life / Maremma Rescue) is faring at Portland?
  23. Where is fifi these days? Gawd I'm feeling old & out of date..... I've made mention of two recue contacts today & neither of them seem to be on DOL anymore
  24. dogmad, satinycats assisted with rescue & rehoming of a beautiful Tonkinese that was at Queanbeyan pound a few years ago. I don't think satinycats is on here anymore, but je m'appelle may know how to contact her. Sally Rogers at Happy Paws Haven, Grafton may also be able to help.
  25. Rae, have you looked in the breeders section of DOL? http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature/golden-retriever.asp The female sounds like she could be a candidate :)
