  1. I know this is not your breed, but I think you will find a lot of answers & hopefully help from this download http://www.greatdanerescue.com.au/Docs/separation_anxiety_seperation_training.pdf courtesy of Great Dane Rescue & Rehoming.
  2. Not a silly question at all. There is evidence that desexing entire bitches can make some forms of aggression worse.
  3. Congratulations HW / PF I am coming up for 10 years in April too I still love the same breeds I have had for the last 30 years, Shepherds, both Belgian & German, & Kelpies; although the lovely boy that brought me to DOL has now gone. Just down to two in our pack now, a Groenendael & a Kelpie...... maybe I am getting old? There's a lot of former members that I miss too, they are too numerous to mention (& of course the scandals ) However, I usually visit DOL most days..... there is always something to learn about dogs :)
  4. Have fractured a bone in my right hand so have difficulty holding the camera. Not really happy with this week's effort but hopefully won't be as painful this week. 4/52 on Flickr
  5. This, plus what does the skin look like? It could be diet related - I'm all for feeding the dog internally for healthy skin & not using external preparations :)
  6. Not might be, must be. What are you feeding - are you feeding raw? I would definitely begin with looking at diet. Do you have access to a holistic vet? To me it sounds like Sarah would particularly benefit from a visit as it sounds there is quite a lot going on :)
  7. Have you read the Calendula tea rinse threads? Lots of satisfied customers & more comfortable dogs there
  8. Have to agree with this & Hockz, I think he has reflux. One of my dogs gets it when fed oily or fatty foods, for instance he can't tolerate lamb. OH also suffers from reflux & frequently feels nausea upon waking but has experienced unwanted side effects from drugs like losec & omeprazole. By trial & error he has found watermelon to be a saviour which we now give to Ringer whenever he rushes around trying to eat grass or exhibits any symptoms such as gulping. It seems to do the trick, though I am not sure exactly what is in watermelon that eases the feeling of nausea & negates the acid.
  9. Do you mean the homeopathic remedy Sepia? Sepia is often used for female health problems.

  11. Yes, Bowen or acupuncture, definitely worth a try
  12. 3/53 Shades of Grey Smoke haze over Canberra makes residents uneasy 11 years and one day after catastrophic bush fires swept through the Capital. on Flickr
  13. I don't know that iodine would influence coat colour per se, it is a mineral that is needed for general well being....... growth, reproduction, & of course a constituent of thyroxine needed for thyroid function & control of metabolism. True, hypothyroid dogs are usually sparsely coated with little undercoat & dilute in colour so I wonder if this where the belief of adding kelp to a dog's diet will stop the coat from turning copper? Importantly, over supplementation of kelp can cause the thyroid gland to overproduce T3 & T4 hormones causing hyperthyroidism. Interestingly, over supplementation over a longer term can also be a factor in hypothyroidism; if hormones are overproduced it can cause an immune response where the immune system may start to attack its own thyroid gland.
  14. I'm so sorry you are going through this, SaltyDog. I too lost a wonderful companion to mandibular osteosarcoma about 18 months ago. I have nothing more to add to the insightful responses already posted here, but send you strength to face the coming days.
  15. As long as they don't inhale
  16. It could be beneficial to start a relationship with a holistic vet, trinabean, but the vitamin supplement should be available through your regular vet :)
  17. When our Shep x had cancer I was giving him a Vit A,D & E supplement. I used to buy it from my holistic vet who bought it in bulk & then decanted it into smaller bottles. From memory it was a sheep product, it was given orally, not by injection, & only a tiny amount was administered, measured with an insulin syringe.
  18. Yes, we have tigers here & they are often out on the hunt at night when it is warmer.
  19. I have completed half of a human Bowen course (Bowtech) & usually two sessions are needed, sometimes three, 6 - 10 days apart. If you want to try another modality such as chiro it should really be done as a seperate entity & at least 10 days, preferably 14 days after the last Bowen treatment; the reason being Bowen keeps working within the body for this length of time, & chiro, physio, massage, acupuncture etc. may undo the balance that the Bowen treatment is striving to attain in the body.
  20. Why there has been no aurora..... for all you tired people in Victoria / Tasmania http://astrobob.areavoices.com/2014/01/10/why-no-aurora-last-night-heres-the-scoop/
  21. This will keep the heat in & incidentally is the worst thing you can do for a dog suffering from heatstroke. The dogs are better off laying on wet towels or having a wet bandana placed around the back of the neck to keep the head & brain cool.
