  1. I'm sitting at work exhausted and over-tired after my second night in a row of Daisy not sleeping for more than 3 hours. She's normally slept almost all night but suddenly her pattern has changed, even though our routine hasn't. She's normally asleep by 8.30 which is good 'cause I'm normally asleep by 9, but now she's waking up at 12 or 1 wanting to play. I take her outside for wees and put her back to bed with a bone and it makes no difference, she still carries on 'cause she wants out of her crate to play. I was using a mix of aromatherapy oils (Perfect Potion's Sleeping Mist) in her crate at night, and I wasn't sure that it was helping, but now that I've stopped using it she seems to have gotten worse. HELP! On the bright side though, she put herself to bed in her crate for the first time last night!
  2. So I've started my girl on the raw/BARF diet, and she's not bothered by the strange green splodge mixed in with her mince. There's been really nasty farts though! I'm hoping it's just her system getting cleaned. She loves the chicken frames, one will keep her quiet for a few hours. Once our older dog finishes his current heart/rice mix he's getting switched to the new stuff too. Also, blendering the veggies became a family thing. My mother and older brother helped which is good because it was gross and smelt funny! I know it's only veggies, but still!
  3. Got some HUGE lamb off-cuts at woolies yesterday, tones of meat and bones and yummy stuff for her gave her one at 6am when she decided it was time to get up. It's a public holiday dammit! We're sleeping in! It kept her quiet and happy in her crate. Surprisingly my mother is willing to switch both dogs to the raw/barf diet and is getting the Veg at the markets tomorrow. She's definitely got the border collie energy now, if I can't walk her at night she won't sleep. This is my baby girl:
  4. She's mostly just eating the meat and fat off them, she does steal the littler bones bits from our bigger dog but I've been worried about letting her eat those. After watching her throw up a lot of chicken neck bones I'm a bit more paranoid. I've printed your veggie list and directions off, I'd love to switch my parents dog over to a healthier diet because he's a fatty fat fat and no amount of excercise is changing that.
  5. She's getting her necks frozen and it's just not slowing her down anymore, she's been getting beef soup bones daily. My biggest problem is getting my parents to respect my feeding decisions...
  6. I've been wanting to start her on a mince/veg/offal diet but the thought of blendering offal revoltes me. Is it possible to make a raw mince/veg mix and add raw offal a few times a week?
  7. After reading some threads here about Raw/BARF diets, it's made me a little worried that my puppy isn't getting a balance diet. Her daily diet is: Breakfast - beef hearts cooked with rice and left-over veggies During the day and her night meal is (possibly) Supacoat Puppy kibble (the one Dr Harry reccomends). Is that going to be ok for a 14 week old border collie x? She gets RMBs and chicken necks daily to keep her busy but she's started swallowing the necks whole. Is there something else I can give her? Thanks you guys.
  8. I made sure she didn't get to keep hers, and made my mother put them somewhere else so she can't get to them. Now to keep her from eating potting mix and palm seeds!
  9. I think the potato appealed to her because she's cutting some new teeth and potatos are hard and soft at the same time.
  10. I was trying to find where my Daisy had hidden her Kong today, and was surprised to find a very hole filled potato under the couch! She quickly owned up to it being hers when she took it while I was looking under the other couch. Is my puppy the only one who likes to hide the strange things she steals?
  11. I've just finished reading "Getting started: clicker training for dogs" and I really think that's the best way to teach my Daisy. My question is, what would be the best high-value yet quick treat for her? She's 12 weeks now and quite smart. She's picked up Sit and is learning Down. Any advice for beginners?
  12. Her eyes are definitely two colours, her breeder said the blue would lighten to that icy blue that Huskies have. He's not sure where it came from! I adore her so much already. Her first night here and she's telling me when she needs to go outside for wees, I'm guessing that's because this is her first night ever inside.
  13. Name: Daisy Breed: Border Collie x Staffy Age: 7 weeks Just picked her up tonight so still getting to know her. She settles down really quick though, she fell asleep when I had her on her back to wash her tummy.
  14. Thanks for replying Miranda. Part of the reason I've chosen an ACD is the active part. I need to start getting more active myself and a furry friend who needs a lot of walking and running will help a lot. Also I love how intelligent they are. I'm really looking forward to the (frustration and) bonding that comes from training her. We've got an ACD X mystery coffee-table and he's the laziest dog I've ever met. My puppy run will only need to be until she's about 6 months old, then she can have the full run of our yard. I emailed our local obedience club about puppy classes, just waiting to hear back from them.
  15. Hopefully I'll get some help if I post it in the right place. Have recently convinced my mother to let me get an Aussie Cattle Dog puppy. Yay! Before I do the actual puppy purchasing part, I wanted the yard to be as puppy proof as possible. I'm looking at building her a puppy pen about 2.5m by 6.5m but I'm not sure what it's best to build it out of. I work in the building industry so I have some access to heavy mesh and things like that, but it can start to get pricey. Any suggestions? I looked at buying an enclosure kit from my local pet-store, but the area she'll be in isn't completely level, there's a step from the grass to the veranda. What will I need to know if order to raise her as an outside dog from the start? Also any tips on Cane-toad proofing the yard and/or enclosure? I'm also having a lot of trouble finding breeders of ACD in Darwin, there's a lot of back-yard breeders, but I'd much prefer buying from an actual breeder. She (Daisy) will be attending puppy pre-school, is it better if I do it through a vet or an obedience club? Anything else a new girl should know? I've never had an actual puppy before, we've always just rescued strays.
