My dogs have never had fleas so I dont have to worry about that but neither do I send them to the groomers. As for going to the vets clean, always. I have house dogs and if they want to sleep on the bed they have to be clean, also I am a little obsessive about them smelling and looking nice all the time

Personally I dont like Eukanuba for my Samoyeds but each to their own. My dogs dont really like kibble all that much either but two I have found they will eat is Pro Plan (Salmon) or Nutro (Natural Choice, Lamb and Rice) We also mix it with something so raw mince or sardines, sometimes they get a little cottage cheese too.

Does Anyone Separate Their Dogs When They Go Out?
Bjelkier replied to geo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My two boys are together in a big run, my little girl is in her own due to size and the fact that when she is in season I need her to be use to being on her own so started out doing that from the begining. When I had a bulll breed he was always part from the other dogs unless under direct supervision, I just didnt trust him 100%. -
I'm waiting for one more photo and then it will be done.

I had mine on Pro Plan for ages and I was more then happy with it. Only reason I changed was i wanted something more natural. Now they are one Nutro Natural Choice, Lamb. It's fantastic! Also Pro Plan do a fish one for sensitive doggies, its very good.

Are you able to expand on this a little? What are they likely to do to a would be burglar? They will bark to let you know that someone is around but they will probably run and hide if a burglar actually gets in. When we lived in Sydney, ours actually saved us from getting broken into by their "I mean business' bark. Ah got you, sounds like what the Sammies will do, only Elkies look a bit tougher Thanks

2010 Training/title/goals Wish List
Bjelkier replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am training Mistral for his CCD and CD titles. We put it on hold while I got his conformation title but now thats out of the way we will be doing this. -
How well do they walk on their own. Do they pull, zig zag, act up? I found that getting my pack to walk together was to get them walking well on a loose lead first, a heel command was very helpful and then got help from my OH. Each of us had a dog and were able to correct each if they were being silly. We practised this until the dogs were comfortable with each other while walking and then transfered to a single leash.

Keeping Working Breeds Or Big Dogs In Small Spaces
Bjelkier replied to dee lee's topic in General Dog Discussion
Personally I wouldn't do it. But having said that my breed of choice is very active and noisy (working breed), I am sure there are many Samoyeds out there living in flats and the like but I wouldn't do it because it would make life harder for me. I think it really comes down to the dog itself and what kind of situation you are in. If the dog is able to get a walk twice a day or so (for an active working animal) along with heaps on mental stimulation I see no reason it couldn't work out. -
For anyone in Canberra the organic butchers in Fyswick markets has roo bones, venison, chicken, duck, lamb and beef. Its brilliant and very cheap.
-
I have the total opposite reaction to my Samoyeds Everyone comes flocking up and taking photos, wanting cuddles and pats. Who could walk past a big white teddy bear? I did get annoyed when an entire bus load of asian tourists poked their arms through the car windows for pats without asking me first, but I guess its better then running in fear, they were just lucky my dogs are friendly.

Sorry, but I disagree with the bolded part. I think dogs still have much stronger survival instincts than people give them credit for and I think many would adapt pretty quickly and learn how to hunt successfully in the wild. I think if you survey'd the DOL community, the majority would have dogs with some amount of prey drive. I agree with Stormie, I really believe if they had to a dog will hunt. I know mine do, they have killed many rabbits and hares and happily munched away until I have arrived and taken the body away.

No I don't agree with it at all, don't want to feed a dog or cat meat get a bunny. Dogs are carnivors, if they were desgined to eat plant matter they would have different teeth.
-
A bit of both would be nice But my main problem is that although the adult coat is through it is not full length yet and the back of the neck in particular tends to lie a bit flat. Thanks heaps, I will keep an eye on that when the Crown Royale stuff arrives! The reason I ask is that I have been having a similar issue with Mistral, around the shoulders and neck and I was given some plain ol sugar water to use and it worked really well. Got to be careful about how much sugar you use or the coat will end up harsh and sticky (last thing you want is a judge sticking to the dog :p ) and it needs to be washed out when you get home but if you are desprate and have nothing else its worth a try. Otherwise I hear the Chris Thick and Thicker one is great and I will be using it on my boy if and when he needs it next
-
What are you going for, a thicker coat or something to make it stand up better, ie so its more big?

Come over to the spitz thread and introduce yourself and Baccus, we need more Samoyed owners :p http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=137956

How To Get Weight On A Genetically Thin Dog
Bjelkier replied to Norskgra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry no advice but I have been have exactly the same trouble with my boy Mistral His father is exactly the same and no matter what I do I can't keep weight on this dog! Drives me nuts. Perfectly healthy it just seems to be him (wish my body could do that :p ) He will only eat a small amount of dry food and he can be difficult with raw if he is in the right mood. It's bloody annoying. Hope you are able to find something to help your dog. -
What a little cutie and great name
