Cost For Small Breed Pups And Question About Temperament?
Bjelkier replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
They really do. You have no idea how many people have asked me if that's what my Hav is. Very frustrating. Price however...well, they ain't cheap. You can pick one up for around $1500 - $2500 depending on who you go too, lines etc. You could get an older puppy for less but finding one could prove difficult. -
I grew up with gundogs of various types and mutts. At the moment I have Samoyeds and a Havanese. I adore both breeds and don't see myself without either any time soon. The only other breeds that could one day live with me would be a Pyrenees, Karelian Bear Dog, Eurasia or a Greenland Dog.

I'd stop the antibiotics for a start if they weren't proscribed by a vet and take the dog to the vet first thing tomorrow morning. Also a bland dinner of chicken and rice to settle the stomach

Do You Like It When Strangers Interact With Your Dogs?
Bjelkier replied to Blackdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm cool with it provided they ask first. I have Samoyeds, you can't take two steps outside without people gushing over them. Children especially, are drawn to them. I think being show dogs mine are very accustomed to strange people patting them and they adore the attention. I might not always be in the mood to chat but if purebred owners are going to dispel the notion we're all stuck up crazy people we need to be friendly and approachable IMO. -
Getting Two Puppies To Keep Each Other Company...
Bjelkier replied to Missymoo's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree totally. I kept a brother and sister from my last litter. They're wonderful together but not obsessive about it. That being said I was very careful about training them to except being apart early. -
What a great story. It's well documented that wolves and ravens have a good working relationship and will play with each other. "Ravens not only scavenge wolf kills, but steal up to one third of a carcass, by continually carrying away chunks of meat, caching and hiding them both from the wolves and their fellow ravens. A fascinating new study suggests that, since an adult wolf can, by itself, kill any prey smaller than a large moose, the real reason wolves hunt in packs, is to minimize the portion of a carcass lost to ravens! And while it may seem that wolves have the short end of this symbiotic relationship with ravens, idle wolves and ravens have been observed playing together, with ravens pulling on wolf tails, and wolf pups chasing after teasing ravens,"

Can't say I've ever been worried about the Crow/Ravens with the Havanese puppies (they did worry me when I had my rabbit but that's a different story) eagles however worry me a lot.

Sounds very much like my alpha boy.

Online Litter Registrations With Dogs Nsw
Bjelkier replied to Trisven13's topic in Breeders Community
When I was doing my last litter online it kept coming up with the same notice. I sent the names in anyway and got every single one, no changes made. Everyone I know has had the same problem. -
Similar thing happened to me a few years back. I was out walking one of my boys when a woman came running over with her little girl absolutely gushing about Misty, asking if she could pat him. Turned out she used to have a Sammy and he'd died just before her daughter was born. The poor woman was in tears telling me about her boy and explaining that "this is what my boy looked like" to her little girl. It was a bittersweet moment.

I've been told Samoyeds are actually part bear But since getting the Havanese my patience has been tested somewhat. Having a small, long coated coloured dog is asking for stupid comments about DDs. For the most part though people are really good about it and what to learn about the breed. Although my favourite has to have been: "What is he?" "Havanese." Looks at me like I'm a bit thick ......."Half of what?" "No Havanese, you know like Havana, the capital of Cuba?" What really worries me though are the number of people who need help working out their geography.

Wonderful

All my Samoyeds are avid hunters. I don't like it but they're dogs, dogs hunt, it's natural to them.

My Samoyeds do the same thing

What Do You Do With Your Dogs When You Go Out?
Bjelkier replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
When I'm home the dogs have free range inside or out although most of the time they chose to be side with us, unless it's dark and the samoyeds are out watching for possums  If I'm gone for a couple hours they're locked inside, the two oldest males are kept separate. If it's a whole day they're locked in the runs outside. I don't give them free range of the yard. I have stock fencing and I don't need them getting ideas and getting out or having a workman leave the gate open. The havanese are always locked inside regardless of the time we're gone. -
What Breeds Are Most Common In Your Area?
Bjelkier replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
Working dogs as I live in the country -
Try adding pineapple to his diet. It stops many dogs eating their own poo.

I know of a Beagle and a CKCS. Both presented as female and went on to live very normal lives

Not all breeds have them. Samoyeds do, Havanese don't.

Everyone I'm close with thinks exactly the same. Temperament comes first, it always has. I temp tested my last litter before I went over their structure and I'm very confident I placed the right dogs in the right homes, that they all have lovely temps as the parents were also taken into account before breeding. The breeder of my Havs thinks very strongly about temp and my little boy has the most amazing temperament. HW makes a good point about different breeds having different temps. I wouldn't expect my Havs to have the same temp as a friends Bullmastiff but I'd still say all the dogs are correct to their standards and have good temps.

One of my friends is allergic to dog saliva and she still breeds and exhibits them, she won't give them up. Her dogs are trained not to lick and if they do she just takes a antihistamine

At the moment I have to say I am most drawn to the Leonbergers and Newfoundlands (even if I can't get a more streamlined one there is something very special about Newfs). From the sound of things Leonbergers are really lovely companion dogs. As a rough ball park what would I be looking at if I was to decide on a Leo? Importing one would cost a lot wouldn't it? I know for a Newf I am likely looking from about $2000-2500+, I imagine being a rarer breed the Leonbergers are quite a bit dearer? Pyreneans and Maremmas are gorgeous dogs and absolutely beautiful with the people they bond to, in different circumstances I would certainly consider one as an acreage family companion, but being predominately bred as guardian dogs it is really going against most of their natures to ask them to happily accept strangers coming into their territory all the time. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure with lots of socialisation and training some are absolutely fine with it but sadly for my circumstances I think a breed not bred primarily as a working guardian would be more suitable. I'm pretty sure Leonbergers are guardian dogs too. I know quite a few Newfies who'd have your arm if you breached their boundary - there is no way of knowing if your dog is going to accept strangers unless you take on an adult. Not many dogs will happily accept strangers - or do you mean welcome visitors? One of my Saints was very protective too. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a giant breed who would gladly let 'strangers' come and go - welcome visitors, sure, with the right socialiastion, but most of the giants have some sort of protective instinct. Have to say so do I and I've known quite a number of them (my MIL owns them and I used to show them) One of the most territorial dogs I've ever known was a Newfie.

I didn't know about the speakers but that's what we're moving into! The blends will have names but they are focusing on behaviour/characteristics/environment, rather than visual identification. We don't breed label at all so it felt like that may be the next step and people like to have a bit of fun. It also means we can literally have millions of blends, so they can still be tailored to each individual dog, but just vague enough that there might be some who will share a blend. Hopefully it also entices adopters to read the full write-up, which really gets into the individuality. Do you happen to have links of OS rescues using that system? I'd love to look at it and steal all their things. :D I love this. Entertaining and adorable yet still unique to each dog. Very clever.
