Healthy Weight For Female Samoyed
Bjelkier replied to pip1981's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Pip not a breeder but an owner of a Samoyed myself so I might be able to help a little. The Samoyed is a slow growing breed and generally they will reach maximum height around 6 to 8 months, give or take but then spend a few more years filling out and broadening. Have you had her measured or done it yourself? The standard female height is between 18 to 20 inches to the shoulder. Measure your girl and see where she stands in regards to that, it is possible that you do have a slightly smaller female, it does happen. In regards to her food how much do you feed her each meal? It is possible that she is just saying to you that she has eaten all she needs to keep herself healthy. Dogs will not usually let themselves starve. Persoanlly I would not be swapping foods all the time, it will make for a fussy eater. Find something you are both happy with and stick to it. Something you might also want to try is sardines. Samoyeds seem to love them, my boy certainly does. Its also good for her coat. As for the toy. If she has alwyas been a small eater chances are eating the ball has nothing to do with it. Has she had trouble going to the toilet? If you are worried take her to the vet and get her check out, its better to be safe then sorry. Samoyeds will eat anything and everything Mistral once ate an entire chucks cloth and I only noticed he had done so when he pooped it out a few days later  I swear he is trying to give me a heart attack sometimes, he also had a thing for rocks for a little while too, thankfully he has grown out of that. If you are really worried about her development chat to her breeder if you can, if not maybe contact another one and have a talk to them about her. If you want I might be able to get a few numbers for you of some people to chat to if you need it. WS -
Please don't get so defensive and don't leave, there is no reason for that. Just because you made a mistake dosn't mean we will chase you out of town, we are all human and do make mistakes. No one has been that nasty to you, trust me it could have been 100 times worse. I think you need to calm down and look at it from the perspective of the people on here. We are not going to sugar coat everything for you, if someone disagrees with what you say then they are entitled to their opinion, its a free forum and this is a subject that people get sore about, thats simply the way it is. I think many people where simply upset, just like you. Yeah we all make mistakes, I for one an so far from perfect I forgot what it even looked like. Please don't leave DOL. This is a wonderful place where people can really get some great information and help when they need it. Not to mention being able to meet some truely wonderful, lovely people. But remember that we wont always agree with everything you say, yes arguments happen all the time and thats simply the way it is, just like the rest of life. Try to look past your rocky start and hopefully you will come to enjoy yourself here. Delete this thread and try again. You will always be welcome in the Spitz thread unless JP isn't actually a Spitz and you have made one very convincing costume for him Even so we would still want you. I hope you are able to put this behind you. WS.

I wouldnt give her up just yet. Labs and Samoyeds are both wondeful family dogs provided you put the work in first. They are a great duo IMO and I find that the breed personlities fit very well. I understand that you are worried for your family but no pup will not bite or mouth, its what they do. Given time and training she should stop and Labs are so smart you might be surprised how quickly she figures it out. As huski mentioned if you must rehome, then surely the breeder will take her back. And I just noticed you said you would get another SAmoyed as you know the breed. Trust me, Samoyed pups mouth and bite just as much as any other dog and are in fact more willful and hard to train then a Lab. Its just something to keep in mind EDT cause I am having a slow day.

It could mean that she has not had much training with this kind of thing before. It could be fixed easily with some simple training or maybe you will need a behaviourlist to help out. You have only had her for a day, there is no way to tell right now if she would be better for an older family. Give her some time to settle in. And if you are worried about your children keep them away from her until you know what is going on. What kind of situation did she come from? Did she live with children of a similar age? Has she had any obediance training?

So glad your pup is alright! I had a similar problem with one of my cats, after her vacc she would swell up, a bad reaction apparently.

Sounds like he is very lonely. If he is anything like my Samoyed he will be dieing for attention from someone and they have no qualms about making it known. Samoyeds love company, anyones company and it sounds like he is trying to get attention from someone nearby. You mentioned before that you can't get another dog (thats a shame as they are great with other dogs), is there someone you know who would be happy to take him for the day who is at home or even has another dog for him to spend time with? There is also the option of doggie daycare, maybe not every day but once or twice a week to break up his routine? But starting from the basics again as someone else mentioned about your leaving and coming back would be a good place to start. Also the idea of a more training like walk could help tire him out. I hope you are able to figure something out for him. I can imagine a Samoyed Husky cross has a very loud howl.

Getting Red Dirt Out Of Coats
Bjelkier replied to ~*Shell*~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have the same problem with Mistral at obediance, its all red dirt and by the end of it hes bright orange! I have been forced to give him a bath when it happens, if anyone knows a better way I too would love to hear it. -
You will be wanting the hips, elbows (the breed is prone to HD) and possibly (only some breeders seem to test this) eyes tested. If there are any other tests I am not sure about them.

Your girl looks to be a good healthy weight. Seems fine to me.

I agree utterly with Tess32

I got them for my dogs once and I am really glad I was there watching them eat it. All the bones break off and are very small and hard, I ended up taking them away.

Hand Held Hair Dryer Recommendations
Bjelkier replied to Luke W's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am looking for a good one too, at the moment I am using my hairdryer and it takes a long time. I have to stop and start so the hairdryer and dog dont get too hot. -
What Do You Think Of Colouring /dying Dogs
Bjelkier replied to roxyporsha's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think it can be a bit of fun from time to time if thats what the owner wants to do, provided they are using the right products, but even though I have a pure white dog i would never dye him, I think a coloured Samoyed would look terrible. -
Both my dogs love sweet things  Lestat will try to climb up onto my lap if i have any kind of soft drink and Mistral tries to lick cream off my legs and lip balm from my lips.

Hitting is definatly not the way. I have tapped the boys on the butt a few times to get their attention but never in anger. Hitting makes for a nervous and unhappy dog. I have a growl at my two when they are doing something terrible (only if I have caught them in the act however, any later and the dog dosn't have any idea why you are so angry) take away whatever they are destroying or remove them from the thing. If they are jumping up or mouthing I get up with a growl at them and turn my back on them, they hate being ignored and learn quickly that the certain action they are doing gets nothing good from me. I also agree with the others, get a crate if she is jumping the baby gate and destroying things.

That dosnt surprise me much, thanks poodlefan . I was only repeating what I was told, she actually turned around and told me it was a pedigree teacup schnoodle And this at CDC.. oh let me at her! I nearly died when she said it, honnestly I think I'd have laughed. But I'm sure that's what the website/petshop/puppy seller at Hall Markets told her. And like many buyers, why would she disbelieve it. Sad huh.

You would have to call around and ask, but there is a tiny little dog in my puppy class, he is about the size of Mistrals head, a toy poodle cross and he is iin there with german shepards and golden retrivers, my big boy (who is slowly shrinking compard to some of those other puppies ) I think most places go by age not size. Someone correct me if Im wrong. EDT after some advice from Poodlefan

Im there sunday mornings, cant really miss me im the one with the loud Samoyed pup :D If you see me there come and say hi, I would like that.

Oh dear thats terrible! Your poor little one! I don't really know what to say in regards to rehab for her, sorry. I can say however that it does happen, I've been charged by a Newf, in my own home no less and it is scary, thankfully Mistral wasn't hurt, A Newf would have made short work of him if she had caught him. I really hope your baby gets better soon and that you can get her happy being around other dogs again.

because I live in the country and cars are quite rare Mistral nearly had a heart attack the first time he saw one (where as Lestat grew up in the middle of the city so cars meant nothing to him). I did what Terranik and GoldD did, and its worked quite nicely. He still stops and watches cars now but he isn't freaking out anymore so we are getting there.
