How Do You Give Your Dog Tablets?
cashew replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dog is so greedy he thinks tablets/capsules are treats. Swallows them without thinking. For my foster, I had to open her mouth, insert the tablets onto her cheeks nearer the back of tongue, then close her mouth and massage her neck. Vet taught me this...fed medicine to cats that way too. Works every time. -
I got all my supplies from Greenpet as well. The flower essences are gems in my household. I have got a friend with a dog so fearful of thunderstorm for years. She could not believe her eyes when a drop of flower essence on her dog's earflap calmed a shaking/whining dog within 3 minutes.

I usually squeeze the oil out from a capsule and give it a squirt onto my dog's food. Apparently dogs digest much faster than humans and some capsules may not have been absorbed fully if given whole. Some dogs may just pass the capsule out without leaving time for the contents to be absorbed.

Dublduck Scissors & Thinning Shears?
cashew replied to Bonzawani's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Bonz, I know where you are coming from. It is quite hefty to buy all the items then to realise grooming is not quite your cup of tea. I bought my miller's because it was only to groom my 1 and only MS. We have tried grooming all over---on top of my washing machine, on a make-shift table, etc etc. I just could not afford to get the clamp and a proper grooming table Then to top it off, there are the clipper blades. Quite an investment I would say---for home pet grooming. -
Dublduck Scissors & Thinning Shears?
cashew replied to Bonzawani's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Bonz, I bought quite a few Miller's Forge shears. Shears are extremely expensive where I used to stay so I went for what my budget allowed then. I think Miller's rather heavy on the hand and Roseline is way lighter. Dub's should be somethign inbetween. If you are way way way into investing, then Lespoochs is the ultimate. For home grooming, I should think that Dub is pretty alright. I have tried them and I find them lighter on the hand than my Miller's. There are many groomers in this forum so I am sure they will give you an accurate view. I had the priviledge of trying out the Lespoochs shears as my teacher owns quite a few of them! She uses them on show poodles and bichons. The results speak for themselves. You pay for the quality really. -
Dublduck Scissors & Thinning Shears?
cashew replied to Bonzawani's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have been using my Miller's Forge for 6 years I am not a groomer but have taken a course in grooming just so that I can rely on myself to groom my MS. In my opinion, a curved 8 1/4inch is quite good to use for my MS. I also use a 10" for scissoring his body and face (my friend who is a groomer finds a 10" too excessively long). I think it might depend on what length of scissors you are comfortable with or trained in. I was trained in scissoring with all the ultra long shears so I stick to them... Another friend who owns bichons also prefers a 10" all round. Not too sure if this is considered professional but she goes around snipping with just one pair of Roseline! -
Normal saline is rather safe to flush the eyes. You can try collodial silver if you have some on hand. My dog had about 1/4 tablet of my anti-histamine with he broke out in rashes due to contact allergy. I once had my foster MS soak in lavender salt water. Poor girl was also extremely allergic. If your are into herbal remedies, a soak in the chinese chrysanthemum or camomile flowers actually sooth the swollen and red skin.

Great news about the curiosity returning!!!

Time is essence if there was an obstruction or intestinal problem (twisted intestines). Hope all is well but a run to the vet will set your mind at ease.

Supportive treatment is all one can do to prevent the dog from dying. I will only start any form of alternative treatment when my dog's vital signs are stablilised. My dog went through parvo and it was the most heart-wrenching thing to watch. If he had not been rushed to the vet and received intravenous fluids, he would have left me already. During the onset of parvo, he could not keep fluids down so how else to administer any other applications. My dog was hooked onto fluids for a few days. I believe anyone who has witnessed parvo will remember it vividly...it was that scary.

Are Pawpaws And Mangos Bad For Dogs?
cashew replied to jbbb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My MS will produce a lot of anal gland liquid when he takes pawpaw or papayas. So much so that when he sits on my lap, I get a horrid stain! But pawpaw is good for constipation! -
Weird Advice About Tick Prevention
cashew replied to Baby Dragon's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think frontline does not prevent ticks but rather kills ticks when they bite the dogs. As for tick collars, some of them repel ticks so ticks will not attach themselves to the dogs at all. -
Mine has been "drinking" his necks since 5months old. He rarely chews the necks as well...he vomitted them out on one or two occasion..only to re-eat them. I think necks are easily digested.

Which Vegies Are Ok To Blend Up For A Dog?
cashew replied to jenz0r's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
hehe that sounds like something i would do! did the vet say beetroot was ok for them to eat though? The vet told me beetroot is alright for dogs. I read so much about it being an antioxidant and blah blah blah. But the red pee really gave me a mini heart-attack. I still give him beets every now and then. But I guess it's a rather sweet root so I dont give him a lot of those. -

When i had a juicer, I love to juice beetroot and apples. I usually give my dog some of the beet pulp---since he likes it. One day, I saw him pee red. I cried my way to the vet only to be asked "did you give him beetroot"?. I didn't know the beetroots could stain my baby's pee. -

I have used chinese vegetables--the green leafy ones. I do not have a grinder now so I freeze the veges to break down the cellulose before I feed my boy. I tend to go for deep green ones. Pumpkins (steamed) are also one of my favourites. Actually it depends on what's on special. I will buy in bulk and then leave some for my own cooking. I avoid cabbages and legumes (beans) to a large extend because they cause a lot of gas. -
I ordered Orijen at http://www.pookinuk.com.au Amazing service and the huge bag was right at my doorstep the next day. Totally fuss-free and extremely pleased

Foods And Supplements That Boost The Immune System
cashew replied to Golden Rules's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am not too keen on vaccinating my dog as well. In fact, he had gone without it for 6 yrs until he had to travel to Australia and it was mandatory for him so as to stay in the quarantine centre. Having been a survivor of parvovirus at 4 mths old (2 days after his 2nd vaccination), I decided to boost his immunity naturally with supplements rather than going for vaccinations. I use supplements you have mentioned. To add on, I give my mini schnauzer a dose of super greens on alternate days. Super greens like spirulina and wheatgrass are great for detoxing the liver. When I was feeling richer, I ever ordered some Amazonia herbs for my dog as well. I think Pau d'arco and Sangra de Draco are pretty strong natural herbs for immunity boosting. I also have bovine colostrum as a back-up. Nothing beats a raw diet but me being me, I give him a meal of premium kibbles in the morning and raw diet at night. I am just too worried about missing out on some minerals. I have been giving him Goji berries as treats since he is a little bubba. I also strongly believe in keeping my precious baby happy. I think dogs are so easily contented and they thrive for us when we make an effort to love them -
I am not too sure but I always thought that yoghurt should not be frozen because freezing it causes all the good bacteria to die? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks in advance. I love greek yoghurt (natural plain full fat) and my dog gets it from time to time before his meals. He loves it and licks every bit of it.

I read somewhere that mashing a strawberry on the teeth helps loosen tartar. I am anal because I brush my dog's teeth every night. I use either dog toothpaste or powder with a toothbrush.

steamed mashed pumpkin and yoghurt. I have also tried psyllium husks (soaked and made into a paste, added to food). Both methods work and I tend to see "smooth" soft poo within the next 12-24hrs.

All the natural herbalists....! My mini schnauzer takes chilli raw as well...gosh. I hope that's not poisonous to him. He had taken one of the hottest variety---bird's eye chilli. Ewwww.

My local vet prescribes Benebac Gel (pre and probiotics gel) alongside antibiotics. On top of it, he is also supportive of me giving good amounts of greens (barley grass, wheatgrass and spirulina powders). The probiotics helps to improve intestinal flora whilst super greenfoods help with detoxification (liver protection). My dog was put on a month-long dose of strong antibiotics due to tick fever.

My dog is about 6 yrs old. He is a generally quiet dog unless someone knocks on the door. I guess the month-long stay in quarantine caused some form of over-barking. I was initially so worried that his intranasal vaccine "burnt" his voice. :D Hope he recovers from this low woof. I just got a shock when I heard him bark---so unusual for him.

Hi, Just wondering if anyone experienced dogs having a change in the pitch of bark. My dog had a high shrill but I noticed that ever since his month-long quarantine stay, he returned to us with a very low type of husky bark. He no longer has a high-pitched bark. He is gaining fantastic muscle mass and is in all aspects normal and very happy. But the bark is worrying me. He was put on an intranasal vaccine for the prevention of kennel cough before he flew into Australia. Could the vaccine be a cause for the change? My OH thinks that he has "over-barked" while in the quarantine. Will that change our dogs' pitch as well? He sounds like a "de-barked" dog now. Not that I mind but I just wonder why he has a change in pitch. Dogs do not get sore throats? Will really appreciate your views. Thanks.
