Parvo Killed Two Puppies Across The Road
cashew replied to kazg's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A piece of bleach-soaked rag across your doorway might be useful for giving the shoes a good wipe-down before anyone enters the house. -
great great news

Insecticide and some form of alcohol-based aromatheraphy---they all caused my friend's Sibe to go into miserable fits.

I like the sound of these. Do you aim for a sloppy mix or dry? I'm thinking more dry? And where does one buy spelt? Thanks Ohh one word of caution. The mix will be really sticky. The consistency that I always go for is a moist gooey mess. I usually get the chick pea flour from the Indian grocer (they are so much cheaper there) or organic shops. Spelt causes less allergies and are healthier than wheat. The cookies also smell really nutty after you have baked them. Looks suspiciously like choc chip cookies though. Good for Xmas Doggie Treats

I don't have the exact measurements but here are the ingredients I throw in: Liver Spelt Cookies Beef/Pork Liver all finely chopped Spelt (chick pea flour) Egg Water Mix all the above and dollop small coin-sized amounts onto baking tray Bake in oven until dried and crispy Store in airtight container. You can also use all organic items to make the cookies a real health treat.

Look at his A*hole region. If you notice or feel 2 hard lumps at 4 & 7o'clock, the glands may be engorged. Most importantly, there is a distinct rotting/metallic smell around the area.

Could be the warmer temperatures attributing to higher amount of yeast? My dog smells kind of "yeasty" when the climate gets warmer. Rinsing with ACV helps only for 1-2 days. Important thing is not to have any sugars/high levels of carbs in his diet.

Just last evening I saw my dog snapping in the air trying to catch a fly..he got it! He splat it out and ran away (maybe he doesnt like flies). How disgusting..I brushed his teeth after that  Did some internet search and the results show that moths are not poisonous per se. So should be okie if they eat a few--though moths are supposed to be bad-tasting! eeks. Not too sure about lizards though...

Have been noticing some moths in my house. Just wondering if they are dangerous if my dog ate one? I am super paranoid and frightened of them...any ways to prevent them? Eeks. Thanks in advance.

Even with a screen door the flies somehow make their way in because I cook daily I dust my dog with the neem powder...it is more of a flea/insect repellant but I see the flies avoiding him generally. So I guess it is somewhat good. I re-apply the powder daily..takes less than 2minutes. But I still need something for the home..so I use citronella in my aromatheraphy diffuser.

If Money And Availability Were No Issue...
cashew replied to cassie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Will keep the current menu but "upgrade" everything to Organic/Free-range. Maybe steam some large piece of organic wild slamon every alternate day.... -
The buzzing drives me mad! I keep my dog indoors so the flies are not attacking him per se, but I use neem powder on him and when we walk to the garden, the insects generally leave him alone (except for a lone bee which decided to sting him  ) Neem powder

Is the blood "fresh" looking? I have not come across dogs having bloody diarrhoea from the squeezing of anal glands. I think the average time for food to pass through the dog's entire system is about 4hrs? So quite unlikely for it to be a de-worming effect..then again I might be wrong. Ice is perfectly fine if the source of water is directly from our taps..unless poor baby had been dragging his ice all over the garden and thus picking up bacteria? I personally find sardines too oily for my baby. When he gets too much oil, he produces loose stools. If Henschke is totally well you might want to eliminate sardine and see if he still has the loose/bloody stools. My friend's CHH produces bloody stools everytime he steals the cat food.

Have not seen the pink slickers anywhere yet but my friend who runs a grooming business in Singapore told me that the Doggyman Sales Rep had shown him one. He asked the sales rep "how do you suppose a male groomer use this?". He said that he will have 3 delivered to him in Dec. I really can't wait to see that. Have also asked my sis to check out the Doggyman stuff when she visits Tokyo next month (but all the brushes are made in China now).

My Les Poochs has got a stray tooth and that darn tooth sliced thru my fingers! But it is one of the brushes I will keep for life...makes me feel "posh". haahhaha I heard that Doggyman has just launced a Pink-handled slicker brush..will be getting one I love Doggyman's greyhound comb...I used one for almost 5yrs until I forgot to pack when I shifted. What a waste!

If you are all for natural products, try Greenpet

You can go to a petshop and look for ear cleaners that deal with ear mites. They are extremely contagious but are not difficult to treat. You need to be consistent with the applications of the ear cleaners though...

Feeding After A Bout Of Diarrhoea
cashew replied to kendall's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Was told that steamed pumpkin is good for firming up stools. Acts both ways....good for constipation as well. I have another method (very traditional "cure")---boil very small amount of rice with a lot of water. When done(rice becomes very very soft and broken up), take the porridge water and substitute as drinking water. The porridge water is fantastic to hydrate as well as soothe the stomach. Passed down through generations---both humans and animals in my family have done well on that. -
Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets
cashew replied to Alison's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Personally I steer clear of Iron if I am already adding organ parts into the raw diet. Trace minerals are good for the skin in general...but not too sure if we need to add that to our dog's diet. On a sidenote, I donate blood regularly and often receive free iron tablets from the bloodbank. I reject taking iron pills as they give me severe constipation and black poo! So I guess I am not suited for an OD of iron -
Really? ;) The brochure I picked up for 'Niulife Extra Virgin Coconut Oil' actually states; "Coconut oil has no cholesterol, no trans-fats and is lower in calories than all other fats and oils. It is the premium high-heat cooking oil, enhancing the flavour of many foods." In another part of the brochure it states; "The healthiest cooking oil - free of trans fats and not damaged by heast as other oils are" I think what I meant was that the oil breaks down at 32deg. The goodness of a cold-pressed oil (and we pay premium for that) is that there is no heat alteration. Once we apply heat to oils, the oil breaks down and the goodness in the virgin cold pressed is literally poofed away. Normal Coconut oil is a common high-heat oil for cooking but for virgin coconut oils, I would think that we want to preserve them in their unaltered states---virgin and cold pressed Cold-pressed oils are so much more expensive to buy compared to normal oils so I think it is a "waste" to buy oils cold-pressed, then use them to cook. That's the scrooge in me If I am not wrong, Omegas in oils are destroyed by heat rapidly.

Sorry this is also off topic but pure virgin coconut oil has a slight altered taste when cooked. Maybe it will be good to drizzle it after you have cooked your dishes, rather than stir-fry with them. Virgin Coconut oil starts to turn rancid at about 32deg or so. I guess it will be a good idea to store the bottle in a cool place during summer.

Hi Settrlvr, What I meant was the fat on chicken skin and sometimes beef slices. When I feed my mini chicken wings, I hardly remove the skin on it. Also, I realised that he does not do to well on lamb/mutton as opposed to chicken. He tends to fart a lot when he consumes mutton/lamb/goat. Those visible fat bits left on chicken necks should be quite safe for a MS right? I once consulted a chinese herbalist and he told me to keep my ms away from red meats as such meats are "heaty" thus contributing to his skin itch. I kept away from beef for quite a while except for the occasional slice when I do cook for myself n those are usually slices with just very tiny bits of fat on them. I am constantly worried about giving him the wrong diet....

I got the organic virgin coconut oil from the health food shop. My boy's skin has also improved. I was giving him fish oil caps but I couldnt find anywhere how much vit e to give him and I didnt want to over or under dose him. From what I have read yes coconut oil does have saturated fats in it but they are different from butter etc. Some research has stated that coconut oil can reduce cholesterol levels in humans. Maybe I need to read a little bit more about it :p I try not to read too much into new fad foods or else I will end up taking 200 supplements a day But I tried the virgin coconut oil for months and when I had my blood tested, my triglycerides levels were lower so I think moderation is okie (I also take fish oil caps daily). My dog gets less than a teaspoon of virgin coconut oil on alternate days. I believe the virgin coconut oil has minute amounts of saturated fats and more of the good fats. However, switch to the usual coconut oil and we are in for a stuffed artery. Having said that, my boy does consume chicken fat and beef fat from the raw meats and bones he takes daily. If I am not wrong, raw fats are converted to energy in dogs. Animal fats are mostly saturated. So confusing Rule is if dog is healthy and enjoys, moderation is the key.

I got a small bottle of Virgin coconut oil from the health food store and had fed my boy for about 2 mths on alternate days. He loves the taste. It is supposed to be a good supplement for skin and weight control! I have not seen any weight loss in myself but my boy's skin did become less flaky. Have finished the bottle so might just buy another one. I toss it in salads and I love the coconutty taste.
