I usually do 5-10 minutes of walking on a lead, heal work, spins, quick downs, start line practice...all with food rewards (in an attempt to get him revved up). He probably gets 10 treats before I get in the ring. I think this is part of my problem. He's not a great tugger. Yup. He's much more subdued at trials. At a trial, he's most drivey after a run to get back to his treat bag I think I've not been very successful at fading food rewards at it's contributed to quite a few problems.

LOL. Fed Barkly some chicken mince before the trial. First run was OK. Second run he lost focus and went sniffing twice during the run. Third run he was pretty much off with the fairies at the start line. I ran him out of the ring after the first jump So my results on feeding before a trial - inconclusive :D As an aside, I think I really need to have a good think about my whole trial routine. But that's for another thread.

Ever had to clean poo out of a tunnel during a trial? I have Had to climb in and get it The one and only time my dog has pooed in the ring (hopefully the last lol) Glad I'm not the only one! Barkly has pooed twice in the ring - once in the tunnel (same, had to drag it out of the ring and climb in). Both times, he'd already done one for the morning. Thanks for the feeding advice guys, I'm going to go the roo mince with water on Saturday morning. I don't have any problems getting Barkly to drink. He drinks on command, but I don't usually need to tell him to drink. As long as something is going into his stomach, he's happy. :) added: I'd never considered that Barkly's lack of stamina could be partly caused by a lack of breakfast!

Ever had to clean poo out of a tunnel during a trial?

I'm now reconsidering my pre-trial and pre-training feeding routine. How long after a normal meal should I wait before running my dog hard? 30 minutes? 1 hour? Longer?

Barkly doesn't normally eat breakfast so he doesn't get fed before a trial. I tend not to feed him before training at night either. At my last trial, at the completion of his run, he just kept running, bolted out of the ring and headed straight for the treat bag 15m outside the ring I've made that mistake twice now - it won't happen again.

I remember a visit to a wild life sanctuary on Phillip Island a number of years ago. An old dingo, who seemed completely blind, was slowly walking the fence line. As I walked up to the fence, his ears pricked up and he stopped and sniffed the air, then slowly walked to where I was. I placed my palm against the fence and he sniffed, then licked my hand through the wire. I had to be dragged away. It was heartbreakingly poignant. I have an enormous soft spot for old dogs.

God, I'm such a softie. Hard to watch.

Barkly is 4 years old today. Or is that 1 year old? He was born on the 29th February, 2008! Happy birthday Mr. Blue.

I'm going to be a bit embarassed about the condition of Barkly's coat. A motorcycle injury, a couple of weeks of minimal brushing and a coat full of burs...I hacked into him I will be bringing camera.
