What camera?

Thanks TLC - I got some plastic combs with mine - but I mainly need the 10 blade which came with the clippers. I couldn't help myself and trimmed his ears a bit just to test the clippers. WOW!!! They cut through the hair like butter. So much better than my Wahl people clippers. WooHoo!

Dog Sniffing The Ground While Training
Luke W replied to Heidii's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Personally, I wouldn't be correcting the dog. What if he continues to sniff - do you continue with ever increasing levels of correction? Is he sniffing because he's stressed, bored or confused? Sniffing can be a 'displacement behavior' or is he sniffing because that's more interesting than what you have to offer? Barkly is a very nose focussed dog and would take to ground sniffing during training. About 2 months ago I started to use the Premack principle and put sniffing on cue. I also made an effort to be more enthusiastic about training and also increase his reward levels for focus. It's making a world of difference. His focus is better, he's working with much more enthusiasm and he sniffs less. While on lead - at the start, when he was sniffing, I would get his attention somehow, then click and reward as soon as he looked at me, then tell him "go sniff" and disengage. He would go sniff - as soon as he switched attention back to me - click and reward and another round of go sniff. Pretty soon - the 'go sniff' time got shorter and shorter. Now - I get him to do a couple of exercises, then tell him to "go sniff". He wanders off for a few seconds and then comes back to re-engage - if he's giving good focus - click and reward. Worth a try? -
It's both - it's a marker and release. Some clicker trainers use the clicker purely as a marker and then follow up with a release command - for others it also means end of exercise. For example - if she's training a sit - once the dog sits, she clicks - the dog is now free to move (to get it's reward for example). She also uses a release command as well - just not when she's using the clicker - that's the impression I got.

FWIW - she does NRM - but only once a dog knows the exercise. The actual pre-prepared part of the seminar was basic clicker stuff - but the hands on sessions were tailored to each specific dog. Some dogs were beginners to clickers and so those particular sessions focused on basic shaping skills. Some dogs were more advanced so specific problems were addressed in Uta's particular style.

2009 Training/title Wish List
Luke W replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hmmm... I'd like to start trialling both obedience and agility! What would be tough but achievable titles to get in the next 7 months - considering I haven't started obedience trialling (he'd probably pass CCD) and haven't started a formal agility classes yet (next week - agility starts - woo hoo) ? -
Ditto!! Was an excellent weekend. Got some great tips, watched a great trainer in action, had a few laughs and put some friendly faces to names - at a very nice club! How good was the weather?

I'm just teaching 'left' and 'right'.

Classic  We've been practising on a sleeve for weeks. I only had an old jumper to use and I've been whacking him with a piece of spaghetti while dragging him around. I think he's got the makings of a real dog! I've renamed him Bärkzlee.

Don't laugh at me and my cocker - I have a feeling I'm going to look a little out of place

Re jumping on the couch. One method is to train an incompatible behaviour. Does the dog have his own matt or cushion in the lounge? Train him to sit on his cushion by first luring him to his cushion and the treating him there. Treat him every time he goes to the cushion - eventually he'll learn that going to his cushion gets him treats. Barkly runs straight to his cushion every time I walk into the lounge.

When trialling, are you supplied with a dumbbell that could be wood or plastic? -

They are very soft. When I bought my first one, Barkly stole it off my desk. I came home to find the lounge room littered with pine chips. .. Just yesterday I placed an order for a couple of new dumbbells and some scent discrimination stuff! -

Thanks everyone - I'm going to grab a Wahl from clipperworld.
-
I've been using a Wahl 'people' clipper to keep Barkly (an English Cocker) a little bit neat between visits to the groomer but they struggle to get through the longer fur on his ears and the fronts of his font legs. I'm not sure if they just aren't up to the task or if the blade is blunt. Any recommendations for clippers and blade(s) for Barkly? I will use it mainly to keep his head smooth (skull, ears, cheeks, etc), the fronts of his front legs, his chin and neck. I keep the rest of him neat with scissors and a coat king.

A 430EX is what many people start with. The 580EX II (or the older 580 EX or even a 2nd hand 550 EX) are more powerful units with some extra features. If you only want one flash the 430EX is probably the best bang for buck. If you want to start playing with multiple flashes, then a 430EX and a 580EX II is the option that's cheaper than two 580EX IIs. http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfa...speedlites.html

I recently started my guy on Dermapet EicosaDerm (it's an omega-3 balanced fish oil) - in 2 weeks, I've already noticed a difference. YMMV. -
