Breeder Policies On Puppy Deposits, Partial Payments, Etc

Are you asking about if the buyer can't take a pup they've put a deposit on... or if the breeder has unforseen problems? T. -

Please Lock (Leaving Dog Alone For 9 Hours 4 Days A Week)
tdierikx replied to batmanforever's topic in General Dog Discussion
It can be done... dog knows, many people have managed it over the years - even "novices"... we all have to start somewhere, yes? I was 19 when I left home and got my first really truly my very own dog... and if I'd asked here first, I may well have been shot down in flames... *grin* Thankfully back then, we didn't have internet forums to ask permission from... *sly grin* The only thing you really want to take into deep consideration is the probable lifespan and life changes your chosen breed (or mix) will likely have... and how you are going to stick with it through all that time... T. -
It's good, but not 100% accurate, as only vets who have signed up and actually enter data when they have cases is counted. It will give a fairly accurate idea of where disease hotspots are though... Not a bad initiative run by one of the companies that sells the vaccines IMHO. T.

Getting A Big Dog A Small Dog Friend....
tdierikx replied to EllieDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Patience will be the key... Your Lab is still a puppy herself... I'd wait at least another 12 months before adding a puppy to the family - especially a smaller breed. My Lab girl was a shocker when she was young - her name is Trouble for a reason - but she started to grow a brain at around 2 years of age. I wouldn't have trusted her with a small breed pup before then... or any pup for that matter... *grin* For what it's worth, Trouble ended up helping me foster and raise around 200 rescue puppies over the years. As naughty as she was as a pup, she has turned out to be damned near bombproof as an adult and an awesome dog all around. In the meantime, work on her obedience training and continue with controlled exposure to playing with other dogs. My Lab was expelled from group obedience training, so don't despair that yours is taking a bit of time to get the drift... it WILL happen, OK? Maybe limit the amount of rough play YOU have with her, as she needs to learn that it's not OK to bite, scratch, or jump all over people... you want her to learn control over her own boisterousness. Why Should We Waste 4 Billion $$ Over The Next 10 Years?
tdierikx replied to Willem's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nothing quite like nursing a pet through parvo.... Yep. Or euth'ing them in a vet clinic or shelter. I got out of rescue after having to hold each pup of a 6 week old litter that had to be euthed because of parvo... it's soul destroying... It's taken me some years to get back into rescue (of a sort) T. -

Arthritis - Whats Best For An Old Dog?
tdierikx replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This is the most effective arthritis "treatment"... supplements and medications will be much more effective if the stresses on the affected joints are reduced. Zeddy was kept a nice lean weight, and I'm sure that was why I only had to give her Meloxicam when weather conditions were likely to affect her. T. -
Arthritis - Whats Best For An Old Dog?
tdierikx replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I used to give my old girl (Rotti/Pittie) 1.5ml Meloxicam of an evening if the temperature was set to drop below 10 degrees... made it so much easier for her to get out of bed in the mornings. That was the only real sign of old age she ever had right up until she passed at one month shy of her 16th birthday - which was a bloody good innings for a dog of her size/mix! T. -
There are 3 Sulphur Crested Cockatoos at one of my work placements who know I'm scared of curved beaked birds... and the buggers will hang on the door waiting for me to try to come into the aviary... I refuse to go in there now, as the horrid things attack me 'cos they know I'm scared... grrr! Doesn't do anything to allay my fears let me tell you! I'll be happy to go in there to catch them for euthing if ever asked... they are NASTY!! I'm not scared of the shoe-eating Galah in another aviary... she confines her attacks to the steel cap portion of my boots, so all I do is try not to step on her as I go about cleaning and feeding... lol! An Alexandrine Parakeet named Cookie wants to sit on my shoulder and blow kisses in my ear, but I'm leery of his beak getting that close, so I let him stay for a short while, then tell him to get on a perch. In the past 12 months, I've only had 2 vet visits with my dogs... $253 for Zeddy's final vet visit ever in July, and $75 to give Harper a C5 shot because I had to board her for a couple of days In March. As part of me fostering and volunteering for a rescue, they also give me feed for my own dogs, so I've probably only had to buy 2 bags of food for them over the past 12 months also. Even as she was aging, Zeddy was surprisingly healthy up until her final collapse that night in July... the only expenditure was for a bottle of Meloxicam at cost price (my local vet insists on giving me discounts for some reason) to dose her with on colder nights for her arthritis. My current dogs are 3, 5, and 10 respectively... and in great health so far. I don't vaccinate annually, or even tri-annually, so they only get vaccinated if they have to go into boarding which doesn't happen very often - basically Harper will get boarded if I have an overnight excursion for TAFE, and a friend comes to feed the other two - I have one more of those excursions next semester, but this year's vaccination will cover that boarding spell... yay!
