phenomav .side effects etc
tdierikx replied to riley wonder dog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It may take time for your dog to get used to the Phenomav... or the dosage may need adjusting... I'd be calling the vet and checking with them before dropping his dosage. Rear end weakness, lethargy, etc, are known side effects of Phenomav... but sometimes get somewhat better as the dog gets more used to the drug in their system. Talk to your vet... T. -
Alternately, set up the situation... I pulled a vine down to just out of pups' reach for the following... T.

Exercise before trying to take photos... tire them out some... Training sit/stay with food rewards... Squeaky toy held above camera and shoot down for adorable "I'm really interested in you" shots... works wonders for older playful dogs too... see photo I got the other week... ... or you can go for action shots showing off cute dog in full play mode... Complaint about a dog breeder (Advice needed)
tdierikx replied to nathansmith's topic in General Dog Discussion
As others have said, there is the possibility that environmental factors can play a part in both cruciate and elbow issues... so, unless the vet is willing to write a report stating beyond any doubt that these issues in your dog are 100% hereditory/genetic, the I'm afraid you may not have any case against the breeder... Without knowing the breed (large or small), it's hard to pinpoint whether there may be a genetic predisposition to developing the issues you are reporting. T. -
*giggle* Spot on DDD! T.

Gorgeous photos... and a lovely interaction captured... The Taronga "dads" (Shikamoo and Samaki) don't play much with the little ones... more like tolerate their antics until the kids get bored... lol! Shabani is the most likely adult male to actually play with the toddlers, and he's really good with them, he's so gentle and tolerant. Mostly it's Koko that is singled out for playtime with the babies, and given that she's not to be trusted around newborns, she has shown she's an awesome aunty when they are older. When Fumo was tiny, Sule (Sandali's littlest brother) was his babysitter, and would often be seen taking his duties very seriously, spending as much tiime as he could with his little charge. Then as the other 2 babies came along, Kuma, Shiba, and Lisa would tend to stick together in what we called "mothers' group", and poor Sule didn't get much of a look in after that... It's possible that the large size of our group - and the current introductions of 3 new adult females - has contributed to the kids singling out the "safer" options for their adult playmates. Then again, as we have 3 toddlers of fairly similar ages, they play a lot together too, and really have no need to find alternate playmates. T.

Be still my beating heart... I LOVE Pudden! T.

Fair enough on the Royal Canin Danois... I used it as an example because my Dane cross girl did well on it as a young'un is all... also, my example here was more as smaller meal to supplement the frames... T.

Hahaha! Has Secret watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Bunnies can be scary! T.

He doesn't look underweight to me... decent coverage over the hip bones looks good. He may be a bit ribby, but he's also still growing at his age I'd say. At the boarding kennels I work at, we have had dogs that didn't tolerate minced frames, but were competely fine with whole ones... no idea why that is, but they would get squirty on the minced version, and nice solid poops on the whole ones. I wouldn't discount frames until you at least try a couple of days and see how he goes. If he is allergic to chicken, you'll know soon enough. My 32kg Dane cross girl gets one frame a day, and is maintaining her condition/weight just fine... so if your boy is nearly twice her size, I'd try at least 2 frames a day, and add other supplemental foods as required - like Royal Canin large breed Junior (as he's over 12 months and doesn't really need puppy feed any more). Hahahaha! It was a worthy sacrifice of a mermaid though... lucky Neko! T.

I'd be trying chicken carcasses whole, so he has to chew them up before swallowing - 2-3 a day until you get a weight (read body condition) on him that you like, then feed to maintain that weight/condition... supplement with fruit and vegetables for roughage. You can cook the veg with stock to make them more appealing if he's a bit fussy about them at first. T.

All news media reports are having a field day with where and how this attack occurred... Pitty mix isn't helping the dog's chances - whether it was trying to help or not... T.

Would you get a second opinion now or???

At the very least, I'd be asking for an xray... T. -
Did Stussy eat her breakfast before you went to the vet? Possible that would have upped her blood sugar levels so that nothing showed up on the bloods... but would also have possibly negated another round of fitting too... We used to have a tube of nutrigel handy for small breed pups when they were weaning, as the occasional pup would not get enough for whatever reason, and the sugar hit would definitely help stop the siezures... honey can do the trick too, but nutrigel is the bomb in cases like that. The dog at work was 13... and it's not uncommon for older dogs to "suddenly" develop issues like diabetes. Also, as he had his fit in the morning before we feed breakfast, his bloods showed really low blood sugar as the cause. He had a full bowl of his dinner still uneaten. He spent 3 days at the vet getting further tests and recovering from his ordeal, and they ended up ruling out diabetes (thank dog)... so he just has to always have a selection of dinners to make sure he eats enough to not fit again... *sigh*... at least his owners were understanding about old dog issues and were happy for the vet to run all possible tests to get to the bottom of the problem. update; Staffordshires going to court - rescue still refusing to return
tdierikx replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
Seriously... the dogs had chips... and were registered on 2 databases for same... how freaking hard was it for the pound staff to simply check the national register? Surely, if a dog is chipped, but no details at all come up on NSW CAR... wouldn't pound staff be canny enough to realise that the dog may be from interstate (read on holidays), and a simple check on the national register can reunite the owner with the dog? And just how did the pound legally transfer ownership to the rescue... who also happen to be bloody interstate whose chips are registered on yet another database... Beggars belief! T. -
update; Staffordshires going to court - rescue still refusing to return
tdierikx replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
Most reputable rescues would have returned the dogs once the rightful owner was identified... Seems strange that the rescue could get the owner's details from the microchips, but the council pound staff couldn't manage it... Wonder how much the rescue are asking for these dogs - seeing as they are pretty blue staffies... T. -
Hypoglycaemic maybe? Blood sugar dropping... How late does she have her evening meal, if any? Maybe feed her a small meal right before you all go to bed, and see if that helps any. Will at least rule out that option if the siezures continue, and it won't cost as much as more vet tests... We had a little dog in boarding who had a hypo seizure due to not eating his evening meal... fussy little bugger just decided he didn't like the food he'd been eating happily for a week already... *sigh*... anyways, it took him a good 5 days to start acting his normal self and being chatty with us again. Note that the seizure he had was a pretty scary one for onlookers, and must have really knocked him about some. We had the luxury of making sure he had a selection of dinners overnight from that point, and no more siezures... T.

A big black Labrador would also do the trick... muggers are very leery of big black dogs, regardless of breed. T.

Skin allergy and kennel cough vaccine
tdierikx replied to Zarligirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Theoretically the Cephalexin could interfere with the take-up of the vaccine, but as kennel cough is caused by a virus, I'm not sure that it would be very effective at it. Surely the vet could have help off on the vaccine for a week or so in order to get the skin allergy thing under control first? I'd be looking for another vet myself... T. -
Try turkey necks... too big to swallow whole... and quite lean... T.

Finh is around 55kgs or so... he's a huge bundle of cuddles. Not interested in treats or toys... just wants cuddles all the time. Jewel is cheeky... acts much younger than she is... and also loves cuddles, toys, treats... any and all human interaction I'm pretty happy with that photo of him... sums him up totally... lovebug! If I were to have my pick of the 4... Finh and Zeuss... complete charmers in their own different ways - Zeuss is a big puppy... T.
