  1. I reckon you tormented it a whole lot less that that annoying bastard that kept yelling "crikey"... ... and it was a very pretty snake - even though she was rather ticked off... T.
  2. Hmmm... very interesting questions there Cosmolo... I don't know exactly what you mean by "bite inhibition", but if it's where you teach a dog to not bite or bite down on things (like people), then I've taught my Rottie/Pittie girl that a little too well methinks. A few times, my Lab and my Rottie/Pittie girl have gotten into a very nasty spat, and the Lab who has not been taught "bite inhibition" is the way nastier attacker, and does a lot of damage to my Rottie/Pittie. The Rottie/Pittie gets in her bites, but certainly does a hell of a lot less damage to the Lab - she's lucky to make small punctures that hardly even draw blood. Then again, the Lab goes for the front legs and shreds them, whereas the Rottie/Pittie goes for the neck and head to bite and try to hold. Neither dog has ever bitten - or tried to bite - a human... both of them know that is particularly off-limits... T.
  3. Lilly, Clayton, Connor, Joshua, and Merlin are all pups I have fostered... I still have Lilly, but she's not up for adoption... the boys have all been adopted now...*grin* The rescue property has a swimming pool - so every now and then we grab a dog or dozen and see if they like it... T.
  4. My dogs are loving the tugs that nikivds made for them... and my foster pup is totally fascinated with plastic bottles that she can clatter up and down the hallway. T.
  5. 1. Crates - for house and travel 2. Chuckit "tennis" balls - they are indestructible - my Lab kills the black Kongs 3. Bagless vacuum cleaner - I have a Labrador - nuff said! T.
  6. I have 2 of my own, but foster regularly... have only answered for my permanent furkids... T.
  7. On the way out to the rescue the other day, I came across an elderly Foxy cross taking himself for a walk down the middle of the road. I stopped the car and got out to try to get him to go home, and he decided to climb into my car! I had a vague inkling as to which house he belonged to, so I drove him there, and tried to get him to come out of the car so I could pop him back in their yard, but he refused to get out of the car. The yard had another larger elderly dog in it, so I tested her friendliness through the gate (I got a lot of licks and her tail was wagging happily) - then I went to the front door and called to see if the owner was about. Luckily he was home, and he came and got Napoleon out of my car and back into the yard... and Pearl the big dog was so happy to have her mate back. Last night when driving home from the rescue, Napoleon was out on the road again... grrr! He was heading towards home, so I slowly followed him to make sure he got there - and had to chuck my flashers on when a car came along and was trying to overtake me - he didn't see Napoleon, and probably would have run him over if I hadn't been there making sure the old guy was OK. The speed limit on the road is 80kph!!! (it's a rural area) I'm dreading the day when someone finds Napoleon's body on the side of the road... T.
  8. Spot on Greytmate! Deelee... your girl looks just perfect to me... and I'm very sure that Wendy would agree too. Are you going to be going to the group dog training that Wendy instructs at when they start up again in March? Wendy will love to see Honey and feel her all over for you and let you know if she needs to gain, lose, or stay exactly as she is, OK? T.
  9. We have a ShihTzu cross Poodle in rescue... we call him the Shitty Poo... haha! He is a bit of a grotty boy too... but not a turd... lol! Oh, and we had a Staffy X Maltese a few months back - she was adorable. Think Staffy build with a long slightly coarse coat. She was adopted by a couple that came in one day - he was interested in a Staffy type dog, and she was interested in a Maltese type dog... you should have seen their faces when I said I could fill their requests with ONE dog... hahaha! As soon as they saw her it was love at first sight - for them and the dog... T.
  10. The playpen greeting is pretty non-threatening... should work pretty well I reckon. I foster pups for rescue, and I know my girls are fine with pups - but we still do the "crate welcome" when a new one comes in. I have the pup still in it's travel crate and my girls come over and sniff or lick them through the door of the crate - once the girls have gotten over their fascination with the new pup in the crate and walk off, that's when I'll let the pup out and all has worked well so far... I don't know what they are going to think of the 4 small breed pups I'm going to be fostering soon... we usually have larger breed pups here... I'm having visions of my Rottie/Pittie girl backing off in abject terror of stepping on one... lol! We'll be doing the puppy playpen thing with the new pups - they might scare my big girls. My Lab pup has been getting socialised with the small pups for the past few days, and so far they have ganged up on her twice... but she already seems to know that she has to be very gentle with them. T.
  11. The rescue I volunteer at has a pool... we try a few of them out in it every now and then... most love it as long as someone is in there with them... Timba... Clayton Lilly Jasmine Connor Joshua Merlin T.
  12. Have you ever met a dog that didn't take to Jack? You have yourself a little dog whisperer in the makings there k9angel... So lovely to see updates of sweet Jasmine - she's a beautiful girl, and she and Jack make a perfect "heart" pair... true little soulmates... T.
  13. Jed - my vet advised me that a dog may be asymptomatic but still be carrying the virus. When I had a pup come down with Parvo some years ago, one of my adult dogs "helped" clean up the pup's messes. My vet advised that I needed to get all of my adult dogs revaccinated and keep them in quarantine (ie not leave my property) for at least a month after the vaccs. The vet was concerned that the dog that ate the infected poops may actually have the disease, but not be showing any signs of it - she never had any symptoms - and the vet came to my house to do the vaccinations. T.
  14. I've been known to have a chat with some that have been in the pound... you ask them "what's a sweetie like you doing here?"... and they will happily tell you their life story... unfortunately I wasn't in a position to spring any of those - but I'm pretty sure many of them did get rescue - happy and dog friendly little souls, not hard to rehome once in rescue... We have one at our rescue that is a total grunter when getting cuddles... cracks us all up... *grin* T.
  15. Dogs can have it and be non-symptomatic also - but they will shed it in their droppings... Evil disease! T.
  16. I tend to squat down and go in for the gentle chest scratch myself... haven't yet met a dog that didn't like that... *grin* T.
  17. Awww! Happy Birthday spunky man!! T.
  18. Have you tried putting a dollop of plain yoghurt in with your dog's food? Won't stop the actual farts, but has been known to reduce the stink factor... T.
  19. I have a Labrador... nuff said... *grin* T.
  20. We have a litter of mini Foxie cross pups (4 pups) - one of them has double rear dewclaws - but the bigger shock was that she is brindle... lol! We'll get those back dewclaws removed when she gets desexed. Her sister and 2 brothers don't have black dewclaws - 2 look like foxies, and the other looks like a little black scruffy thing... *grin* I can't wait to see what shape the brindle pup turns out to be - imagine a brindle minie foxie. She is a really nice mahogany brindle too - simply gorgeous! T.
  21. Any Pet Barn type store will have puppy playpens that will serve your purpose just fine - I bought one for under $100 and it managed to contain a couple of 6 week old Great Dane cross puppies perfectly... T.
  22. Hahaha! It was a bit scary there with the pups for a day or two, but I followed the advice of a very wise vet, and they all pulled through. I also foster pups for rescue, and a few of them have had the cough... no biggie nowadays... *grin* I have a pup here at the moment that is on the tail end of her cough - she's only had a very mild dose though - the C5 vacc may have assisted with that. She is only coughing early in the morning and late at night now. I'll agree that the first time you are confronted with a dog seemingly coughing it's lungs up, it's a bit of a fright... as long as they are eating and acting normally and have nothing nasty coming from their nose or eyes, you just ride it out, and they'll be just fine... The fun part for you will be that you still can't take them out for 2 weeks AFTER the cough stops - as they are apparently still contagious. T.
  23. Try having 3 large breed adult dogs hawking up all night while they sleep on your bed... then a week later have 9 two week old pups come down with it... pups that young can't cough, so they can get very gurgly and it sounds horrible! Cure for the pups was plenty of mum's milk (she'd had the cough the week before) and keep them warm and very dry - as soon as the bedding gets damp in any way, change it! All 9 pups survived and thrived... T.
  24. I foster care young pups myself... and ALL are desexed before rehoming. My job is to make sure that they are ready (read fit and healthy, big enough and old enough) BEFORE they get booked in to the vet for their operations. They also learn valuable socialisation skills with other dogs (my dogs) and people in a home environment. My rescue coordinator trusts MY judgement as to when my young charges are ready for their surgeries - as I'm the one with them in my possession/care... We haven't lost any rescue pups under GA yet... and that's not just down to luck... I have never personally lost one of my own dogs under a GA, but I have had one that came close to bleeding out on the table because the vet ignored my instruction to test her clotting factor prior to surgery (she had Von Willebrandts(sp?)). Needless to say that we don't go to that particular vet any more... I have also had a dog that reacted badly to sedation, but handled GA just fine - anything requiring sedation in a normal dog, my boy was knocked out completely for instead. I understand your concern about the dog you had in your care, but if the rescue was itching to "turn her around and out the door quickly", then they didn't seem to have had HER best interests at heart, did they? T.
