  1. My Labrador, Trouble, is the noisiest when she's playing... so is Zeddy my other girl - and sometimes James the foster boy gets some noise going too... You learn to tell what's a play growl and what's not pretty quickly... *grin* Some people are just so precious about their dogs' interaction with others... I bet your girl ends up well socialised and friendly - and that other lady's dog becomes a nasty mollycoddled snapping thing that is frightened of everything and everyone... T.
  2. Exactly... thinking like them means noticing what they notice, and instinctively sensing what is going to happen next - some people are born with the sense, and others may learn it. Spend enough time with lots of different animals of the species you like, and you definitely pick up on how they think and react normally. For the "not normal" ones, most of the same instinct is there, but may be masked slightly by other learned behaviours - a keen eye and good sense will see you through in most cases. Loads of patience is also good to have... *grin*... all of the really good trainers or "whisperers" rarely do their block with frustration... have you noticed that? T.
  3. I think it's more of a mutual respect thing with dog/animal "whisperers"... body language showing that you are calm and not feeling threatened, or being threatening towards, the animal in question goes a long way towards a successful interaction. Being able to "think" like the type of animal you are interacting with also helps. As well as knowing the basics about their body language. Has anyone seen how Cesar Milan wags his butt when approaching some dogs? I've tried it, and it gets some amazing results. I don't like his hissing thing for correction though - I get better results with a short, sharp "uhh"... T.
  4. If you are looking for a rescue dog and want a reference for a really good rescue nearish to you (she's near Wollongong), I would recommend getting in touch with Cazstaff on this forum - she does an awesome job with her rescues, and will be able to help you with any questions you may have about getting a rescue dog - and she may even have one that will fit your needs... Are you looking for any particular type of dog? T.
  5. Are your dogs microchipped? They must be before you can register them in NSW... T.
  6. Great - the owners of the dogs said they'd contain the dogs to the back part of the yard to stop them reacting if anotherdog or person stuck part of themselves over or under the current fence - and now they have a stupid child hanging over the back fence aggravating the dogs and the dogs get locked up?? Pretty soon we are all going to have to have massive cage enclosures in every yard that has a dog - to prevent the public from being stupid and getting bitten for invading the animals' territory uninvited... *shakes head at political correctness protecting the stupid minorities* T.
  7. I feel your pain... I still have the crutches I was given by the hospital after 2 Labrador pups smashed into my leg while playing zoomies. They missed the mailbox post and the tree - but didn't miss me! T.
  8. A big Aussie "ONYA!!" for all involved... it's stories like this that reaffirm our faith in other people... T.
  9. If you kick an attacking dog hard in the chest area, you can kill it... and if any feral mutt was going for my babies, that's where I'm aiming for - with a steel capped boot! T.
  10. Hell yeah - I'd eat from a basket offered to me by a pretty dog! That said, I've been known to share an ice cream with my dogs... one lick for me, one lick each for them, etc... T.
  11. Definitely your major nasties will be ticks and cane toads... I went to school in Murwillumbah, and my folks still live in Burringbar... The occasional snake - brown, black, death adders, etc - could be an issue if you will be on acreage... However, the area is definitely God's own corner of the planet - you'll love it there! T.
  12. So... have we started to see any action yet? I still want to know how many, what colour, what sex, etc... and pictures!! I'm sure a few registered breeders here have had an accidental litter in their history - and I haven't seen any indication from jamieson that she doesn't care about the wellbeing of ALL her dogs - even the unborn ones. Some may be jumping to conclusions about what will happen after the pups are born... Oh - and we still don't know Daddy's name... *grin* T.
  13. To pass the time while we wait... have you got any photos of Pearl to share with us? and/or any of the prospective daddy (what's his name)? T.
  14. Just what I was thinking... building her fan base before she puts on the show... lol! C'mon Pearl - my workmates think I'm mad because I keep telling them that I check this thread first thing in the morning and first thing when I get home from work... and sometimes before I go to bed - for good measure... T.
  15. Another could be "Took my Time" or "When I'm Ready"... lol! Oh Pearl... have you been busy overnight? T.
  16. C'mon Pearl... not long now sweetheart! I'm getting all fuzzy thinking of the photos of your new babies... please do it all at a reasonable hour for your mummy now, OK? T.
  17. Some people have no clue - if the dog and your neighbours are happy going along the way they are, then who gives two hoots what some other person not living with the dog thinks? T.
  18. Oh Pearl... have you done anything spectacular overnight? *grin* T.
  19. Trouble can get quite vocal during play, and people who don't know her are a little put off... but their dogs aren't... *grin* You should hear Trouble and James playing - talk about noisy and rough!! Trouble teaches all my foster puppies that noisy play is OK... T.
  20. For dog's sake Pearl... hurry up and pop those babies out! It can't be comfortable having them all inside now... Tummy rubs from me too... nice two handed round motion ones... hopefully to stimulate them puppies into wanting to be born... *grin* T.
  21. That is going to be an amazingly scary bruise tomorrow... get some photos of it in the morning and print them... then if you can go to the council admin section on monday, take the photos down there and ask to lodge a formal complaint about an aggressive dog that is constantly let to run in the park with no owner control or care. The dog should not be allowed to run with other dogs if it's uncontrollable and aggressive - and the owner needs a good slap upside the head also! I have been known to swing the boot into a dog that was attacking one of mine - and I didn't care if it got hurt... by the way it winced off afterwards I think I might have cracked one of it's ribs... errr! T.
  22. Oh Pearl... sweetie... you really need to get down to business soon... we are all waiting to meet your babies! ... and the waiting is driving your mummy nuts too... hehe! T.
  23. Hahaha! I can just see that... and have seen the exact same look myself... I wouldn't leave Pearl alone, but I'd definitely not be hovering over her either - just go about your normal habits and just keep an eye out for anything she does that is out of the ordinary. You will know when she's about to do the actual deed - don't worry about that! Trouble didn't like the whelping box we'd made for her - she decided that the floor in the computer room was where she was having them - so we had to accommodate... we drank half a bottle of Baileys and let her do her thing, only opening the bags for her as the pups arrived. Zeddy decided that next to my bed was where she'd do her thing - she didn't like the whelping box either. Blossom, my Rottie girl, was happy to deliver in her whelping box - thank dog! T.
