2 New Arrivals At Nswar
tdierikx replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Are you ready for a complete cuteness overload? I has LOTS of pics of totally adorable (if naughty and mobile) puppies... Let's start with Daisy Boo's babies, shall we? I'll start with the best photo of the day - by the lovely lillypilly... ... and here are the ones I took... How's this one for a comparison between the largest and smallest? Aren't they some of the handsomest pups you've ever seen? And they are all really snuggly cuddlebums too! More pics soming - of Blossom's babies... -

Technically then, both you and Andrea should have access to the main administrator account so that you can both have the level of control you need if the other is unable to do it. You could set up sub-users for each active listing member or carer - including you and Andrea - and then each can list your own fosters... but if needed you can both access ALL animals under your rescue by using the administrator account. Does that make sense? I agree that it's all very confusing at the moment, but it's probably been done this way to make it easier in the future... and we will all forget the initial kerfuffle later... OK - weekly update time... Pups have all gained weight and are very mobile - the photo session had 2 wranglers to try to keep the little munchkins from toddling off. We had to be satisfied with mostly group shots because the little buggers wouldn't stay still for anything more than a few seconds... it was great fun for all involved though... *grin* Both litters have been offered mushy puppy food, and are scoffing it nicely. Daisy's babies all have teeth too! Everyone had their nails cut today and were very well behaved while it was done... their mums are thanking me for it methinks... lol! I've only just finished loading the photos onto my PC from the camera, so have to sort them out and pick a few for your viewing pleasure - there are only 185 photos to sort through... had to shoot the little buggers in sports mode to try to catch them - they were seriously just buggering off all over the place... lol! As soon as I've picked the best shots, I'll post them up OK? (Yes, it will be tonight) Here are their current weights so you can see that they are all gaining nicely... Daisy Boo's babies... will be 4 weeks old on Monday Black and white boy (black spot on neck) - 1.75 kg Black girl - 1.3 kg Black and white boy (wider stripe on head) - 1.9 kg <- wins the award for "fatty of the day"... lol! Big black boy - 1.6 kg Black and white boy (narrow stripe on head) - 1.6 kg Small black boy - 1.1 kg Blossom's babies... will be 3 weeks old on Sunday (tomorrow) Blue fawn girl - 1.25 kg White and blue boy - 1.15 kg White and blue girl - 750 g <- still small and looks younger than the rest, but first with head into mushed solids - I think she'll catch up just fine. Brindle girl - 1.2 kg Dark brindle boy - 1.3 kg Lighter brindle boy - 1.2 kg Black boy - 1.25 kg Black and white boy - 1 kg I'll get onto sorting through the photos now - be back soon to post them, OK? The New Pet Rescue Site?

I think my group coordinator had the right idea getting me to fill in the change-over form for our group... I filled out all her details for the main user (after consultation with her about it), and filled in mine for a sub-user. Of course PR only created the main user profile and lumped all of the combined old (2 users) dogs into the main user's listings. No biggie, as I am fully appraised of our main user details... *grin* So when it all changed, I sorted the mess out and added my own user login. My group coordinator and myself both have each other's passwords anyways... and we are the only 2 PR users for our group, which makes it easier. Speaking of PR - we had an adoption today - better go and remove her from the site... yay! T. -

If you are the main account holder, go to "Manage Listings", click on the name of the dog you want to edit, then when that comes up select "Edit" from the small list over at the top right of the page. T. -
Ummm... my own dogs have done more damage over the years than any of my fosters... scary thought really... I have a Grumpy Granny girl here - she can be the fun police when it's nearly her bedtime... lol! What the heck - she's just turned 13 and doesn't have to play nice with spritely and cheeky young pups ALL of the time... *grin* Good thing I have 2 others who are up for a play 24/7... *sigh* T.
-
All of my own dogs - and all of my fosters - are taught "leave it" and "give"... and even "gentle"... so that I can have some semblance of control when they get something in their mouth I don't want them to have. It definitely does make life easier when our dogs have at least a bit of effective obedience training... *grin* T.

The New Pet Rescue Site?
tdierikx replied to Aphra's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I had fun working it all out last night for my group. Being the IT-savvy person in the group isn't all fun... *grin* Once we got past the initial confusion about logins, etc - they hadn't added the secondary login (mine), but that was easily fixed when I logged in as the master user for the group - just added the user for my own login. Being able to add sub-accounts for other group members by yourself is a big step forward IMHO - much better than having to apply to PR to set up those logins. You all may want to check the profile text for the active dogs transferred over from the old site - the formatting is all messed up... *sigh* Overall - once you get past the initial confusion as to how things are now done - I think the PetRescue folk have done a great job with the new site. T. -
The prudent thing is to assess the animal for yourself before deciding on any temperament or health issues... sometimes pound staff can either get it wrong, or the animal will display differently outside of the pound environment. Staff assessments are a guideline to how the animal appears in the pound - nothing more... T.

Cute Staffy Puppy But No Inquiries

Love the new pics... they show off his gorgeous colouring... well done!! T. -
If a dog has come from an unknown source or a pound, 2 to 3 weeks would be a minimum quarantine period anyways, no? I foster puppies, so a couple of weeks minimum is usually sufficient to sum up what they are like, and start rectifying some minor issues (if they have any) - but with older dogs that have been exposed to many more experiences and thusly capable of having varying reactions to various stimuli, I'd like to see them in care for a minimum of 4 weeks - if only to have time to expose said dogs to as many stimuli as possible. Anyone who says they can be completely sure of a dog's temperament after knowing it for a week (or less) is kidding themselves. I don't agree with listing/advertising a dog for adoption as soon as it comes into care either. But that's just me. Rescues with a revolving door policy in order to "save" as many animals as possible may need a rethink IMHO. T.

There is also a case for environmental security whilst in the formative stages of temperament OutOfSightHound... we are extremely careful with the pups that are born in our care, and make sure that they hit all the right milestones in their development with no traumatic experiences. Every one of our puppy adoptive families have been, and still are, extremely happy with the temperaments on the dogs they have adopted from us. That said, we are also pretty fussy about the homes the pups go to... *grin* I'm not a big fan of the DNA tests available on the Australian market - they really aren't all that accurate, and people can be misled by the results. I'd be playing it by ear at this point - his other testicle may drop on it's own. I'd also be informing the vet that you don't want to desex at 6 months, but will happily have him done once the growth plates close in his long bones. If the vet can't accept this, then find another vet who will listen to you and your concerns about your dog. I adopted a disabled foster pup I had in care - and I didn't have her desexed until the growth plates closed in her long bones. Due to her disability, we didn't want her legs getting any longer than they needed to be. All the vets who saw her agreed that this was the best option for her and her issues. T.

Some rescue groups don't want their processes and procedures aired on a public forum PS... especially if they think other people here may look down upon theose processes and procedures for whatever reason. Horses for courses... those of us who are happy with our respective groups will happily sing their praises from the rooftops, but we don't always air the dirty linen that may also happen. T. -
Hey skuzy... If your meet and greet with the other rescue group doesn't work out... how about considering my latest foster pup? Check her out here... http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/241622-new-foster-girl-noni/ She's not a Staffy, but she IS a really nice dog that gets on well with others, and she loves children... Then again, if Staffy cross is more your bag, check out the 2 litters that were born in rescue... latest puppy pics start here... http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/240968-2-new-arrivals-at-nswar/page__view__findpost__p__5959060 - feel free to go back to page 1 of that thread to see the mummas too - they will be up for adoption too once the babies are weaned. T.

I'd be interested to know what "risks" the rescue group have indicated to you with this particular dog... I'd be a little leery of any group that was indicating there may be something "risky" about a dog they are offering for rehoming (but that's just me) - contrary to popular belief, most rescue dogs aren't "broken" in any way, shape, or form, and any rescue that is offering up such for adoption should be extremely careful about placement. What type of dog are you looking for, and in what age bracket? What sort of temperament are you looking for? Do you have young children, cats, chickens, etc? T.

Yes Rach, Stevie is just a huge bundle of love ALL the time! Every time I bent down on Saturday, she HAD to give me a big kiss... lol! T.

Natural Rearing Border Collie Breeder?
tdierikx replied to creek817's topic in General Dog Discussion
Maybe the OP could visit a vet clinic when there is a dog there with Parvo? I'm sure she wouldn't ever want that to happen to one of her dogs... and Parvo isn't the kind of bug that can be eradicated by "natural therapies"... Having personally seen pups with Parvo, and pups with Distemper, I certainly wouldn't be taking the chance with any pup I brought home. And, yes - I've also seen pups with vaccinosis - however, the survival rate with vaccinosis is extremely high, whereas the survival rate for Parvo is miniscule. I've seen pups die after being wormed too - because the worm burden was so great that the treatment caused too much shock for the pup's system to take. There is a lot to be said for prophylactic treatments IMHO. All that said, one doesn't need to be over-vigilant and vaccinate every year. Titre testing is affordable, and will show whether your pet needs a boost to it's immunities. T. -

Good points there PS - the damage a chewy dog can do is quite incredible. Fortunately for my fosters, they can't really do that much more damage than what my own dogs inflicted on my house when they were pups... *grin* T. -
Noni thought Takoda was the bestest! I'm sure she would have played all day with her newest bestie... *grin* T.

Support For Foster Carers
tdierikx replied to OutOfSightHound's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I foster puppies up to about 6 months of age - because that is what works best with my own dogs. It is not uncommon for me to have more than one foster pup at a time either. I think I'm now into triple digits for the number of pups I've fostered over the past few years for the rescue I'm with. I also have peace of mind knowing that if a foster isn't working out (which can also happen despite the best laid plans), it can be taken back to the rescue - we have a shelter environment. I also get to choose who and how many pups I take into care at any given time. I very rarely take on a foster that I haven't had the chance to get to know while it does it's quarantine (if from a pound), or while volunteering at the rescue shelter. My own dogs are also welcome at the shelter, and can freely interact with the dogs/pups there - they also help me choose prospective fosters... *grin* T. -
Support For Foster Carers
tdierikx replied to OutOfSightHound's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
The rescue I volunteer and foster for supplies everything needed for my fosters... food, bedding, toys, vetwork, medicines and worming stuff, etc... all I really need to supply is love, a safe environment, and a bit of training. If I have a pup that needs more professional work, my rescue has access to trainers to help with that - and if a foster should be ill and pass away through no fault of anyone's (it can happen from a bad reaction to worming, vaccination, etc) they have grief counselling available as well. Not to mention 24 hour on call vets who are simply amazing people who never hesitate to drop everything help out on short notice if needed (and at reasonable rates to boot). All in all, I'm really very happy with the group I'm with... wouldn't swap for the world! T. -

Can you please expand on why you are anti-vaccination? *before this thread goes the way of many others* My own preference is to vaccinate - but that's probably because I have seen (first hand) dogs and pups suffer and die from the diseases that vaccinations help to prevent. That said, I'm definitely NOT into vaccinating my dogs every year, but they do get all of their puppy shots and then at least the first adult booster shot. My dogs only get C3 vaccinations. May I ask what you use to prevent fleas and ticks? Seeing as you are located near Port Macquarie, those would also be a concern, surely? T. -

Watch this thread ves66 - we will be updating weekly, and both mumma dogs will be desexed when they are ready, and then will be available for adoption. Alternately you could contact Cassie at NSW Animal Rescue on admin (at) nswar.org.au about her, OK? T. -
New Foster Girl - Noni
tdierikx replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Noni also had a playdate at my friend's place yesterday afternoon. She met Tilly Devine the cat. Noni was interested in Tilly, but all she wnated was for Tilly to play with her - no chasing, but plenty of asking to play, although when Tilly indicated in no uncertain terms that she wasn't interested in playing with a silly puppy, Noni didn't push the issue... I think Noni will be just fine with a dog savvy cat tht will stand it's ground, but one that runs may get chased... *grin* There was no intent to harm from Noni - she just really wanted Tilly to play... and was doing her very best puppy bows and tail wags to ask for it...
