You were my VERY FIRST thought when Jake and Penni's home fell through... your posts here were so full of longing... *grin* I've PM'd you back with how to get the ball rolling if/when the OH says yes, OK? You won't be disappointed with Jakey - he's a cheeky but sweet little fatty boomba... T. -
The rescue I'm with will happily work with breed rescue/breeders to find a suitable home for a dog in our care... especially if they forward potential great homes for that dog on to us... What we aren't as fussed with is when we've gone to the trouble of rescuing a particular dog, and spent a good deal of time and money to do so, and some person from a breed rescue group starts calling and harrassing us to simply hand them the dog - as if we aren't "qualified" to have one of "their" breed in our care... that sort of attitude is only shown by a few thank dog, but boy it does grate! However, if we know who bred the dog, and they generally do carefully select the homes their dogs/pups go to, we are most likely to offer them the dog back at no cost (and without desexing it like some rescues insist on). Skye Terrier In Blacktown Pound
tdierikx replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
WOW!! A very different breed indeed. must be mostly the cross - LOL. send me a photo please I can get photos of our boy on the weekend - last weekend he was a little bit sorry for himself after his desexing, so we just settled for lots of cuddle time instead of getting him out to perform for the camera... *grin* He has had a fairly simple but neat haircut, not a proper Skye one, but his size and shape should give you an idea whether he has a lot or a little Skye in him... he has the most intelligent eyes too... T. -
Dogs we had when I was growing up... Nuppy and Goose... don't ever let your little brother name the dog... T.

For what it's worth, our rescue has a Skye cross in care at the moment... anyone interested in adopting him? He's a really sweet chap, gets on with others nicely, and loves cuddle time... T. -

I named one of my Rotti boys "Rastus Watermelon" - and one of my friends named their Rotti boy "Xoanon Clay" or just Clay for short... his full name was Dixiefoord Xoanon Clay - sounds cool, yes? Here's a great one for a mutt... "Heinz"... *giggle* I named a rescue pup "Tarquin" recently... and his new owners loved it! T.

I read the original response juice - and there's no way you could get reported for it... certainly not by me anyways... *grin* But like I said before - please go back and reread my posts in their full context - you may see what I was actually saying rather than what you wanted to read into them... Only some rescue DOLers whinge about pedigree breeders taking back dogs they have bred... same as there are a lot of rescues that can't or won't take back dogs they have rehomed also. Nothing is ever completely black and white when it comes to that particular issue... Rescue aren't saying that "a dog can go anywhere and to anyone" - we choose the homes of our charges with careful consideration of what is best for the individual dog. That said, reputable rescue don't tend to generalise about a specific breed (or mix) either - each individual dog is assessed and rehomed on it's own particular merits. Saying that all Skyes are going to always have exactly the same temperament and should only be handled by Skye "people" is a bit silly IMHO... *grin* That would be like me saying all Maltese are nasty little things that will bite without provocation, and should only ever be homed or rehomed by experienced Maltese "people"... which obviously isn't the case, right? Seriously, the Maltese and their crosses I've come across in pounds couldn't be anything more different from some of the nasty little well loved and doted on ankle biters I've had the misfortune to meet out in public - maybe they end up in the pound because their "nasty" is broken? *giggle* As for railing against the EOI system BP have in place - it is there because it is the fairest way of doing it in that environment for all interested parties. I think you'll find that most pounds work to the same system. The breed specialists weren't quick enough in this case for whatever reasons, and the pound is definitely not going to tell a prospective new owner they can't have the dog they chose because some faceles breed specialists insist that they are the only people "qualified" to rehome this dog. I think you all may just have to suck it up this time and remember the lesson for any future time a dog of your breed is stuck in a pound. T. -

Skye Terrier In Blacktown Pound
tdierikx replied to Boronia's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
There are many dogs in pounds all over the country (of full or mixed heritage) who may not suit everybody. Just because this particular dog is of a specific and identifiable breed, who are we to decide - without any evidence to the contrary may I add - that the people wanting this dog and placed their name on him first are any less capable of giving him a great forever home? Unfortunately, none of the people involved from this side got it together enough to place their name on him first - and by the rules of this particular pound, he will be offered to the first EOI holder. It is a reasonably fair system for all when you look at the overall picture... T. -

OK - that is a bit below the belt Sheridan... I'll take most forms of criticism, but comparing/associating my comments regarding this particular issue to PR is a bit rich. All I said was that there is a possibility that the people with the first EOI on this particular dog MAY just be a good home for him. If you wish to read into my statements things that just aren't there, then maybe you need to reread what I've posted in this thread before slinging accusations about. Same goes for anyone else throwing accusations about (thanks juice) without thinking about what has actually been said. T. -

And you've had how many rare breeds? Does it matter? What's with the theory that a general member of the public who adopts a dog from the pound can't be a kind and decent pet owner? Just because the dog in question is a relatively rare breed, doesn't mean that the first person on the list to adopt it is less likely to give it a good home. T. It does to me. To those guardians of rare breeds it is of vital importance where one of their number ends up rather than thinking that as long as a dog has a home that's okay rather than having the right home for that breed. You think someone in rescue would care about that but your :D would indicate you just don't give a shit or just don't have any understanding of what it's like to have one of the rare breeds. All I'm saying is that the person or persons who do end up adopting this particular dog may very well be a great home for him... who are we to decide that they aren't or can't possibly be? T. -
