I always ask first unless I know the owner and the dog and we are on cuddling terms... *grin* T.

Puppy Is Finally Here Yay - You Tube Link Attached
tdierikx replied to sheenat's topic in General Dog Discussion
I seem to recall there is another thread in this very same forum which is pretty light on photographs, even with lawn mowers :provoke: Ummm... working on it... *grin* Pity you aren't in Sydney sheenat... I could have lent you my old DSLR camera to get some pics of Harry... Best trick is to just sit patiently while Harry does his mental "cuddle me" thing, and once he's tired of that and goes off to do his own thing, start snapping away. T. -

Ummmm... *taps watch*... it's 1pm here, and no new pics of Harry... You know that if you post a thread about a new puppy, that it's mandatory to flood us all with large numbers of cute photos... honest!! T. -
So - I'm a non-showie - so I'm a little less clued in about these things than some... What do breeders breed for? Is the only purpose to gain points in the show ring? And if exaggerations of the standard are not exactly beneficial to the breed in question, but awarded by a large number of judges, what is the answer to the problem? The simple answer would be to have the standards changed, yes? But it isn't really that easy, is it? There are so many people who have invested a heck of a lot in their breeding programs to attempt to attain the current standards, that to change those standards in one fell swoop may result in a massive drop in competitors (and their lucrative fees) at shows... not to mention that there would be a good number of people who breed involved with the decisions regarding the standards - not necessarily in their own interests to change them, is it? But then - not all dogs need to be champions in the ring to be considered great family pets either... so why the stigma attached to those who breed sound dogs but don't show them? T.

Yep... got an invite to join them when I was 12 actually... Funnily enough, having a high IQ doesn't always translate to having any common sense... *grin* I'd say that a good number of people participating in this thread have a good smattering of both actually. T.

Just a tip for settling noisy pups... crate or small playpen located in bedroom where pup can see you sleeping... If you don't have a crate, you can get the composting mesh panels from Bunnings to make a playpen for him. I find most of my foster pups settle well when they feel a part of the goings on - even if that means everyone is asleep. T. -
Sammy The Anti-gardener And His Big Weekend

Good that he's not concerned about helicopters... we have the occasional police one looking for crims, and quite a few checking the M5 traffic... *grin* ... and we have photographic evidence that he's not fazed about lawnmowing equipment... lol! T. -
Tetanus Injections For Single Fang Puncture
tdierikx replied to Tazar's topic in General Dog Discussion
The chances of getting tetanus from a clean bite is probably rather low... but if you have the chance to prevent it, then I'd probably have the jab too... Funny how we don't tend to ask the same questions when one of our dogs has a bite wound though... I've seen a dog that had tetanus, and it's not pretty - the dog in question survived, but only because her owner was a vet and was onto the symptoms and got treatment pretty quickly, but it was a very long recovery and the dog is now blind (but the dog gets along just fine). As a non-showie, I'd be a little alarmed at judges awarding dogs with exaggerations that could cause medical issues... but surely they wouldn't be in the majority? As for breeders, I'd be more inclined to believe that most would be aiming for the healthiest and most nicely conformed dogs as part of their programs - rather than just for extremes in the "looks" department. Offering Alternatives To Would-be Adopters
tdierikx replied to Korrigan's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
OK - now I'm confused... it took 11 pretty mild, but mostly informative posts (and in a few cases agreeing with you), and just over 1 hour, for you to become totally disillusioned with this thread. Rather than staying the distance and putting forward some more ideas - I did like some of your original ones by the way - you've essentially thrown up your hands and declared that it's all too hard and taken your bat and ball and gone home... You may be a great home for a rescue dog, just not for the particular one you had your heart set on. Please remember that each rescue has only the best interests for the dogs in their care, and in this case, your home/offer wasn't what they were looking for. Their response gave you their reasons for not offering the dog to you, and now you feel rejected - that's normal, OK? But it's not a reflection on you personally, just that you were not considered the best home for that particular dog. When I have to reply to potential adopter enquiries, and said adopter may not be suitable for the dog they are applying for, I will suggest other dogs in our care instead, or recommend contacting certain other rescues that may have dogs in their care that would suit - but I leave that contacting of the other rescues up to the prospective adopter. We have had referrals from other rescues as well, but it's always been the adopter that has to make the contact. T. -

The New Pet Rescue Site?
tdierikx replied to Aphra's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I must say that when PetRescue send you an email asking to "please explain" a complaint they have gotten about a rescue, it does come accross as accusatory, rather than a "can we have your side of the story" request... maybe a quick refresher in communication with one's patrons might be in order in those cases? With the advent of Gumtree and it's ilk, and PetRescue's less than amazing reincarnation, methinks quite a few people have "gone to the dark side"... As for Gumtree being an "evil place" to be advertising rescues - if enough rescues are using it, we may be able to turn the tide by offering better dogs at better prices than the BYB's... beat them at their own game so to speak... Don't you just love the "teething ears" stage? The fact that sometimes her ears sit nicely is giving me some hope they will turn out pretty good eventually... *grin* Her latest "trick" is digging holes on the yard... and I know it's Pickles who has taught her... T.

Some people are just sadly misinformed about certain dog types... and some of those people also see themselves as guardians of public safety... Whatever this woman's motives, she just also happens to be somewhat wrong about Ziggy... and if it results in a ranger visit, I doubt anything will actually come of it. I probably would have asked her for her email address and offered to send her some much better pics of my dog for her to use... *grin* T.

NO MORE SLEEPS!!!! TODAY IS THE DAY!! Don't you dare forget pics sheenat... T.
