I taught my Lab "whatcha got?", which means "show me what you have in your mouth" - then she learned "give" which means either "spit it out now" or "let mummy have that nasty thing you've scavenged up from dog knows where"... oh - and reward with treat that is more interesting than what she has in her mouth. As for walking nicely on lead... well... basic obedience classes can be good for learning that sort of thing - or shorten the lead and take control yourself for a while... your pup will work it out pretty quickly. Things That My Dogs Do To Cheer Me Up... Or Not
tdierikx replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Zeddy has that special healing saliva, so she licks any sores I have and makes them heal faster. Trouble will sit and just stare at me with a blank eyed stare - whether I'm happy or sad... or watching TV... etc... Pickles doesn't like her Mummy being sad, so she just settles down near me to give support quietly. Harper has no clue there is an entire universe outside of her own needs and wants... but she's only 6 months old... I reckon she'll work it out eventually. T. -
My 4 are... Zed (or Zeddy) - the name just popped into my head while I was driving home with her, she answered to it, so it stuck. Trouble - because she decided to climb under the seat in the car and get stuck while we were driving home with her. Pickles - the lovely lady who found her unable to walk in an Aboriginal camp in the middle of the NT named her, and it suits. Harper Jo - again, the name came into my head, and she answered to it. My best effort was my first heart dog's name - Woosie - she was a Rotti, and just the most wonderful dog ever. We used to get strange looks in the park when I'd call "Woosie", and a 40kg Rotti comes bounding back to me... lol! T.

I disagree. What is the point of half a dozen (or more) sites all saying the same thing? I know that if I had a dog up on, say, PetRescue, I wouldn't be happy seeing him or her on some unknown person's blog. Some information may be changed, left out, added to - whatever. You know as well, if not better, than I that some people in the rescue/rehome business will rehome a dog anywhere, but the majority of people want to know where their dog is being featured and what is being written about him/her. I would want to be in complete control of whatever information is going out on any dog I have for rehoming. How many sites can people visit? There is such a thing as too many choices. I'm of the opinion that the more sites we have out there giving the right message about rescue, the better DD... and poochiemama says she'll only post links to particular dogs with permission. Dog only knows that we have WAY too many people posting misleading info... time to counter it some methinks... and poochiemama is doing great by asking for a bit of advice as to how to get the RIGHT message out there in her own way. Kudos to you poochiemama! T. -
So how far up the F3 did you say you were stans mum? I think I may need me some laid back Stan cuddles... he does do cuddles, doesn't he? T.

There can never be too many sites declaring the wonderfulness of sharing one's life with a dog (or more than one even!) Don't give up just because some might be a little disparaging at this stage... take on board the positives and go with it, OK? The negatives will sort themselves out... *grin* T. -
For sure, we have had people sent by other rescue groups (and worse, from crazy animal lib type groups) just to have a sticky and give us the runaround... but at what point do you turn around and say "get the hell off my property"? We just treat every person coming to look at dogs in the same way - and hopefully the ones just coming for a sticky beak will report back that we aren't all that bad... lol! For myself, when I've been interested in the ways that other groups do things, I have approached them openly and honestly about who I am and what I am interested in. For me, it's a way of learning from others where we may be able to do things better with our own rescue... but I'd never do it on the sneak - much better to be up front and honest IMHO - and you may make some great friends in the process. T.

Kibah is healthy, but she's also an "older" girl... things like this may just take a little bit more time to heal on their own. FWIW I think it's looking a lot less angry than the earlier photos. T.

I wish at least one of my 4 could be as laid back as Stan... but, no, I have crazy zoomie dogs... *sigh* T.
-
If you look at the vessels in the white part of the eye, they don't look as angry as the earlier photos either... I think Kibah may be healing nicely on her own there Kirislin... yay!! T.

Yep - we've had a few like that too... rather disconcerting, isn't it? T.

He needs his Mummy to make him some doggy stubbies and doggy thongs... lol! T.

I suppose the average pet owner has very little clue about the lack of immunity in very young pups - and what a disaster they could inadvertently cause by tracking god only knows what into a breeder's premises just so they can "see the cute puppies"... We don't let anyone see our rescue pups before they are vaccinated either... and people sometimes baulk at the pittance we charge for them - as if a rescue dog is supposed to be "worth less" for some strange reason. A very high proportion of pups born in rescue are caesarian deliveries (usually middle of the night emergencies... *sigh*), the mothers may not have had the best nutrition during the pregnancy, and suffers from eclampsia, etc... and then when people arbitrarily decide that our desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, socialised, happy and healthy puppies are "too much" at $300... well... I can see where an ethical registered breeder may be a little miffed at some prospective buyers' observations as to the "worth" of their pups... T.

We're used to it here... it's become routine... *grin* Juggling isn't really all that hard when there's only one human involved... and all my dogs get plenty of one-on-one time with me, so everyone's happy with the arrangement... T.

Stink eye or not... they are both adorable! T.

You are not responsible for your dog's actions if rushed at by an off leash dog and yours in on leash in a public place. The person at fault is the one who allowed their dog to be at large and do the rushing and the consequences are irrelevent. You don't have to muzzle reactive dogs or keep reactive dogs away from public places where there may be dogs at large rushing at leashed dogs. It's up to the owners of all dogs to keep them on leash in a public place and not allow them to rush at other dogs and respect the personal space of others. :cheer: Not posting in this thread anymore, too many people think it's OK to let off leash dogs to attack on lead dogs, without the on lead dog responding, it's like this. I certainly DON'T think it's OK for ANY dog to attack any other... but I DO think that it's MY responsibility to NOT allow MY dog to react in kind - leash or no leash on either animal. I'm just as pissed at aggressive off leash dogs as you are mantis... believe it or not... T.

Well said MonElite... many issues that come up with all sorts of dogs (pure or mutt) can have environmental factors playing a part in the development of the issue. For example: A large breed well bred pedigreed dog may have sound hips all the way back in their lines, but due to owners letting their pup jump on and off furniture, taking it for long strenuous play or walk sessions as it is growing, etc - there is NO guarantee that the hips will stay perfect, is there? Sure it has a better chance than one that was BYB, but still... No breeder can 100% guarantee against ALL possible issues arising with any dog they pass on to a new home... some issues can be identified and lessened by testing and breeding against, and thus can be assured that they should not develop, but not all... Sammy The Anti-gardener And His Big Weekend

Maybe if we give Sammy and Harper some playtime before we go to Obedience classes, they might be less inclined to be naughty? T. -

Hmmm... maybe Harper might need to join Sammy at Obedience training... then Sammy won't have to be the biggest... lol! T. -
Please read my posting in context before jumping to conclusions about it's meaning... I've had my large dogs aggressively rushed by small dogs many times... but it's still MY responsibility to make sure that MY dogs don't react to the "threat" in a negative manner... Everyone is responsible for their OWN dogs' behaviour in public... and no-one should expect to be rushed or attacked by ANY dog. BUT, if you own a dog that could do lethal damage and is likely to react badly in public, then please either keep the dog at home, get a qualified behaviourist/trainer, and only ever take the dog to places where it won't be stimulated to react badly. It is NOT your "right" to exercise a reactive dog in a public space where it could do something unexpected and either injure or kill another dog - provoked or otherwise. Taking the keep your dog at home part completely out of context and bemoaning how that impacts on you and your FA dog doesn't do you or your dog any favours... what are you doing with Cougar to ensure that she doesn't have the negative experience(s) that your previous dog had? T.

Looks like Stan found the perfect "exercise" spot... lol! T.

I used to have a Rotti girl who would remove all the food from her bowl and then eat it off the floor... but if you put the food straight on the floor sans bowl, she wouldn't eat it at all... go figure? T.
-
I can't wait until her voice finally breaks... she still has a high pitched puppy bark when she decides to exercise her vocal chords... lol! T.

She's definitely gorgeous... but also very cheeky - and sometimes downright naughty... but I loves her to bits regardless... *grin* T.
