Way to go Cheryl!!! How awesome is that? Yay for Narla... such a beautiful girl... T.

Facebook has the potential for being an awesome place to get the message out about rescue in general... however, it's populated by way too many crazy people for my liking. Seriously, if I ever need reminding that my sanity is actually intact, I jump on Facebook and start reading a few of the more scary rescue pages... and feel a whole lot better about my own mental faculties... *grin* It needs to be moderated judiciously IMHO. Nothing wrong with that. Indeed I think it is an inexpensive price difference. Remember when you buy on main, you are buying bloodlines. He could have had the same dog on mains for $300 extra apparently. I know where he got his girl from, and they breed predominantly for the pet market... that said, they'd probably be horrified that he has decided he now wants to breed her. I didn't give him the whole rescue speil... I don't believe that breeders should be stopped from breeding their pedigreed dogs. I firmly believe there is room for all types of dogs as pets - pure or crossed. But I'm dead against ignorant people deciding to breed their dog just for the hell of it - without taking into account any of the things that could go wrong. T.

Pomeranian Having Trouble Breathing
tdierikx replied to yellowgirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
Can you try to make him sleep on his side with his head/neck extended a little for best airflow conditions? It's almost like he has apnoea in that first video... His remaining teeth could be causing his nasal issues - if they are abcessed, that will cause what looks like mucous, but is actually pus. Poor little mite... I don't think I'd have the fortitude to watch him being like that and trying to treat it. You are an angel YG. T. -
The guy at my work said "what is so hard about it?"... he was of the opinion that it's something dogs do just fine naturally... until I infomed him of all the things that could go wrong and hit his hip pocket very hard - not to mention the chance of his girl dying in the process... For good measure, I threw in an analogy... would he "breed" his wife willy nilly just because she was a "nice girl"? Should have seen the look on his face... lol! T.

4 is my magic number... I feel naked with less. I currently have 3 large crossbreed dogs and 1 medium one - all female... saying that it requires some management is a little bit of an understatement. The 2 older girls will fight to the death if something sets them off, so they need to be separate at all times to avoid this. We have a routine set up so each dog gets plenty of one-on-one time with me, and shared time with the others they get on with. Each of them are also fine with being alone if necessary. I also foster puppies for rescue - where do you think the last 2 additions to my household came from... little buggers decided to steal my heart and stay! Saying that, I also have access to a wonderful vet clinic that does reduced rates for me because I'm attached to a rescue - and I get all meds and the like at almost cost (or even sometimes for free). At one stage a few years back, I had 5 Rotties at the same time - 2 intact males and 3 females (desexed) - all ran together without issue. They were completely cruisy to live with... and I'd happily do it again in the future. Must be a Rotti thing... *grin* If you are happy with your current situation, maybe a trial period with the new dog might be a good start - that way, if she settles in fine, you can keep her, but if she doesn't slot in well, you can return her to the breeder. You will never know until you have her at your place I suppose... T.

Some policemen/women have been known to act like pigs... but the vast majority seem to be just trying to get their jobs done and go home safe... 2 of my cousins are policemen, and my other cousin's husband is too... I think all of them do a pretty good job without being arsewipes in uniforms. The cop that shot that dog needs some serious retraining in how to shoot... and to learn when is the proper tme to do so. He could have used a taser instead... T.

Whippet babies? You are SO going to have to post LOTS of photos!!! T.

Yesterday I was chatting with a workmate who has a Beagle pup around 6 months of age - he bought her on limited register (he claims that the breeder wanted $300 more if on mains). Anyhow, like any normal pet owner, I asked when he was going to get his girl desexed... ... and he said he wants to breed with her... *facepalm* So I asked him whether he was prepared for the costs involved in breeding his girl... upkeep during pregnancy, possible issues with whelping necessitating things like emergency caesarians, extra care during the pups' first few weeks, possibility of eclampsia, etc, etc... I gave him a few examples of issues and costs we've had when we've taken in pregnant Beagles at our rescue just for good measure... Somehow I think he's now leaning towards desexing his girl... *grin* Thanks DOL for the liberal amount of info posted about the risks of breeding when you have no clue what you are getting into. T.

I shouldn't have watched that... T.

A friend of mine has a 20 year old cat that has a fave spot during the day by a particular bush in her neighbour's front yard... but the neighbour is happy for old Tigger to snooze there, and all the other neighbours know to look for Tigger under their cars before they go anywhere. Not my fave scenario, but it works fine for my friend and her neighbours because they all look out for each other's houses and pets... all are good friends too. T.

Much as I'm a mad dog lady - I can understand those who might not want to live with any nearby. I work with a lady who has an extreme phobia of all dogs (large or small) - she is completely terrified and freezes up when she sees one - she even gets shaky when talking about them. Imagine her buying into an apartment block expressly because of the no pets rule - and then someone comes in and decides to overturn that rule because of their own needs/desires for a pet. It's not as simple as just selling up and moving somewhere else... T.

Just Beautiful - Had To Share
tdierikx replied to Burdy's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Rescue CAN be a hard slog sometimes - but every great rehoming makes it well worth the effort. For every neglected or abandoned dog that rescue takes in, there WILL be a home for that dog somewhere on the horizon. Some journeys are long, and some are short - but the end result of matching the right home to each dog in care is the very best "reward" for ALL involved - no matter how small the contribution towards that end result, it is very much appreciated by ALL. Rescue isn't just about fostering (even though that is the "face" of things), it's about all the support each dog gets during it's stay in rescue - transport, food, bedding, taking dogs for walks (if in pounds or shelters), even just the occasional kind word to a rescuer can be a valuable thing to keep them going. That is a beautiful poem, and it certainly does sum it all up, doesn't it? T. -
Here We Go Again, This Time Sa's Turn?

Microchipping is compulsory in quite a few states already - and, trust me, they seem to be having great difficulty enforcing it... *sigh* T. -
My eyes have started watering... Tip may be telling you that it's time. T.

Suggested Rescue Groups

Peiradise... the best rescue in QLD IMHO! T. -
I'd love to know who went to the media with the story... and what they intended the story to portray... because as written it really looks like the "blame" is being squarely rested at the feet of the vet in question, rather than sharing it with the owner - who was the one to actually overdose and kill his beloved pet. Does anyone think that the vet wouldn't have given the usual cautions about dosage of human medications when used with animals? Does anyone think that the vet wouldn't have advised the owner to take the cat in to a clinic at the time if he could? I'm tipping she didn't just give her medication/dosage advice, then hang up... The story as written certainly looks like an allocation of blame on the vet alone... which really isn't right. T.

New Uk Laws Prosecting Dog Owners If They Scare Children
tdierikx replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in In The News
Today's society is seriously messed up. children have all of these "rights" and absolutely NO responsibility. Not to mention that pretty much every new law is aimed at the completely stupid in order to protect them from self harm... grrr! Darwin had this very good theory back in the day... so we now make laws so the idiots don't succumb to it... *sigh* T. -
Here We Go Again, This Time Sa's Turn?
tdierikx replied to luvsdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's one of the new RSPCA SA CEO's pet projects... he did a lot of advocating for the same sort of thing when he was CEO of NSW AWL... *sigh* The main flaw with the idea is that those who aren't doing the right thing now, certainly won't be doing the right thing after something like this is introduced... it will only affect those who are already compliant with current laws and regs - and negatively at that... grrr! T. -
Whatever decision has been made, I'd say it's been a personal one... Maybe we need to leave doggleworth be now. T.

Excellent suggestion... I'll second supporting Peiradise! T.

Awesome news and gorgeous pics. They look pretty happy to be back together. T.

Is there anywhere secure from break-in that you can put Narla and the pups if you have to go out? I'd definitely see if there is another foster carer that can take in the pups until they are adopted... way too tempting for the old owner to try to steal one (or all). I'd say they would be more likely to try to steal one of the pups than Narla... Can you find another vet that will desex them earlier than 12 weeks - our regular vet will do them at 8 weeks if they have dropped testicles... do the vets in Wagga do them earlier than 12 weeks? Might be worth the drive if they do... T.

Zipp Looking For A New Home

Hahaha! Ziggy likes the nice warm beddie... lol! T. -
OK - first call to the police to let them know that the previous owner has surfaced and is now asking for Narla or one of her pups "back"... and that you are afraid for not only your own safety, but that they may try to break in and steal one or more of the dogs. Second call to the RSPCA/council to let them know that the previous owner has surfaced and can be tracked down in order to have cruelty/neglect charges served on her for leaving them like she did. T.
