Titre testing would be great Jumabaar - but it's not cheap - and rescues or transporters don't necessarily have enough funds to test every animal they are thinking of springing from a pound. You can pretty much be assured that pups coming into care from a surrender situation have no antibodies - and these are the ones that will be the "collateral damage" if transported with or after other dogs who may only be carrying/shedding the disease. Parvo in adult dogs CAN be non-symptomatic, has an incubation period of between 2-14 days, etc... Rock and a hard place really, but there must be some way to get ALL of us onto the same page here... the potential for more harm than good is actually that high. T.

What makes me uncomfortable about this argument is that we can say exactly the same about puppy farm dogs. They know no different, they aren't committing suicide etc therefore this is "normal" for them. Well met megan, but may I qualify my statement to include only dogs born with disbilities? I haven't set up a Facebook site to glorify the fact that Pickles lives with me - those who have met her and seen her funny walking style are usually full of questions, but Pickles' happy and love of life nature supercedes her disability, and people seem to accept her as pretty normal after a while. Pickles could so easily be used as a donation magnet - but I have a bit more respect for her than that... We manage, Pickles and I (and the rest of my pack) - and she is allowed to do all the things a normal able bodied dog can do - even if that means she may need a little help to do things like get onto the couch or bed. If another dog wants to play rough, I usually intervene because she does get knocked over easily and has managed to break one bone so far by being an idiot. We don't need that happening with any regularity... I owe a great debt to the lovely community worker who managed to get Pickles to a life where she would be given the chance to enjoy to her fullest extent - but when she first came into care, we took her on with the possibility we may have had to euthanaise her if she didn't improve to a stage where she could enjoy a full doggy life. Jasmina - you are Pickles' fairy godmother - and I owe you so much for bringing us together! T.

Rosie doesn't know anything else... she was born that way, and so life for her is definitely different to most, but it's "normal" for her. Same for Pickles - she just doesn't know any different, so manages in her own way... I know for a fact that as Pickles gets older, she may face issues based on her strange movement style... when this happens, I will have to give her her wings - and it may be a whole lot sooner than an able bodied dog. But then again, I could be wrong - she's not showing any signs of slowing down yet, and she's nearly 3 now... T.

This... For anyone who has never seen a pup with parvo, they may not truly understand the horrific nature of this disease. Add that to the fact that it's a bloody hard bugger to remove completely from the environment... Is the getting of dogs to rescues far and wide so paramount that the possibility of "collateral damage" happening is worth it? Especially when it's not usually the people doing the transporting that end up with the sick dogs. T.

Impounded Bull Breed Put Down Before Breed Assessment In Nsw

Did Pebbles' owners know she was in the pound Trisven? T. -
Some people suggested early in the piece that Pickles may have been better off pts... but they had never met her in the flesh and seen how well she copes with her disability. To me, she is normal (well, normal for Pickles anyways) - and very much a part of my family... OK, she has also decided that she's the number 1 dog here and lords it over all the others, and is the most bloody destructive and naughty dog I've ever owned... but I wouldn't have it any other way. There is a "spark" that the special ones have that only an owner/carer really understands... Pickles has it... and maybe Rosie has it too? Personally, I probably would have given Rosie her wings when she was first removed from the hoarder... but I've never met her - maybe there is something about her spirit that "tells" he carer that they are doing the right thing for her? After all that, why didn't they immediately get their other dog out of the pound? They left it there another 8 days and let it be adopted by someone else? Something just isn't adding up here at all... run to the media about Dog 1, and completely ignore the fate of the other one still in the SAME pound? WTF?? Am I missing something here? T. -
May I ask the ballpark figure they charged you for the pup (on the promise of giving you registered pedigree papers)? From what you have said here - and not hearing any side at all from the actual breeder of your pup - it all sounds very dodgy to me... T.

I think I'd have to agree with you there Ams... ... even though I obviously have a warped idea of "cute"... *grin* T.

How awesome an outcome - both for Frida AND the lucky rescue who scored another great foster carer... well done!! T.

In NSW unchipped dogs have 7 days before becoming the property of the pound - chipped, they get 14 days. Once they become pound property, the pound may dispose of them as they see fit - either rehome or euthanaise basically... Also, due to space restrictions in many pounds, a dog can't be held indefinitely until the owner gets around to sorting out issues such as breed identification... if that is in doubt. I sincerely hope that the owners of this particular dog make sure that any future dog they own is properly chipped and registered - this has probably been a very hard lesson to learn, but if they don't learn from it, then it could all too easily happen again... T. -
Rosie was born in Feb 2010 - that makes her now 3.5 years old... she appears to be getting vet care when she needs it, and the person who has her seems to be doing everything to make her comfortable. As megan said though... ... and that could very well be the case... but if the dog isn't suffering unduly, and she has a quality of life (albeit an obviously different life to that most of us would prefer for our dogs) - then kudos to the family who are giving her what she needs for as long as she needs it. She is certainly a very strange looking little creature though, isn't she? Kinda cute too in a weird and unusual way... *grin* T.

Ummm... under NSW legislation the dog would have been declared a restricted breed and the owners would have needed to comply with strict guidelines in order to keep it. All could have been avoided if the dog was actually microchipped and registered with council... T. -

Wanted: Video Footage
tdierikx replied to Baby Dragon's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
The only problem with sharing footage from pounds is not having any control over how it may be used by a third party. I'm not saying that you'd present it badly, but that's going to be the "issue" with getting footage from others. It can be very hard to get a good relationship going with some places, and if they got wind of footage being shared around and out of their control, the relationship could be soured for ALL rescue with that pound. Maybe contact mita here on DOL, she may be able to point you to someone at QLD AWL who may be able to shoot you some shelter footage... they are really good there. T. -
I don't have a middle name... my parents had enough trouble agreeing on the first name... lol! My surname would be Condamine though... *grin* T.

Have you tried approaching any of the pounds or shelters in your area and asking them if you could make your own piece of footage? I'm sure if you explain it to them, and give them the last say on what footage you can use, they might be amenable... T. -

Division of Local Government - in NSW. http://www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/dlg/dlghome/dlg_index.asp Can also be called Department of Local Government in other states - and Department of Primary Industries in Victoria - each state has both from the looks of it, and it depends on the state as to which department looks after companion animal stats... http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/ T. -

Neither have been rehomed over that way hankdog - but another rescue had the other half of the litter... could have been one of theirs?? There were 10 pups in the litter, and they were initially split between 2 rescues. They are all the loveliest snugglebums... very much into getting pats and happy words. Very smart too - learned sit and all that fun stuff VERY fast! T.
