Some vets can be a bit quick to advise that an issue is "genetic". In a large number of cases, there will possibly a genetic component, but there will also be environmental factors at play to bring out the "fault". I've yet to meet a vet that will tell a distraught owner of a purebred dog that they may have inadvertently played a part in "causing" the problem... much easier to lay the blame squarely on the breeder for breeding with "inferior stock", isn't it? Some problems that dogs develop (or even breed specific issues), there are no tests for - so how does one guarantee those issues will never develop? Seriously, as others have said, some issues just happen through no major "fault" of either breeder or owner. T.

New Bag, Same Food Still Gets Diarrhea

I think she looks lovely... look at that shiny coat! I'd not let her put on any more condition than she's currently carrying... and if you want her a little leaner, that won't hurt her either. She's certainly not what I'd call fat... not by a long shot... especially for a pup - they can fluctuate weights over hours... T. -

Maybe try alternating the raw meat with some vegetables, or cutting the amount of it you add... or cut the kibble if you prefer to feed raw. It's actually amazing how little you need to feed a dog to keep it in good condition. T. -

wire - 2 cups of Supercoat kibble for Pickles, Trouble, and Zeddy each - 3 cups for Harper... sometimes they get raw stuff or treats, but not often. T. -

It beggars belief that someone would euth a dog rather than let rescue take it in... why?? T. -

Photos here... http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/254706-shamelessly-showing-off-pup/ Very pretty puppy! I pretty much feed all of my dogs to condition. For example: Pickles weighs 14kg, yet is fed an amount comensurate with a 28kg dog... purely becuse she expends a lot more energy getting about due to her disability. Harper eats as much as a 35kg dog, even though she is only 28kg - she is technically still a puppy and looks just right being fed that much. Trouble is 25kgs, and eats the correct amount for her weight... a friend asked me what breed she was the other day, and was shocked to hear me say "Labrador" - he then said she couldn't be a Labrador because she wasn't fat! (He has a 41kg grossly overweight and arthritic Labrador himself - used to have 2 of them) Zeddy is around 28kgs, and gets fed as a 25kg dog - she's older and not as quick to get around as the younger dogs, so doesn't need as much to keep her trim. It's better for her arthritis to be "on condition" - and I dare anyone to pick her age to be the 14 years she reached last August... T. -

I fed my horse puppy the RC Junior Medium (adult size 25kg)... maybe that's why she's not 50kg... *grin* Switched to Nutro Lamb and Rice Adult at 6 months of age. A change of financial circumstances has seen me switch all of my dogs to Supercoat Adult Chicken in the past couple of months... horse puppy is being fed as a 35kg adult, and is in great nick so far - not fat, but not scrawny either. People pass comment on how nice she looks - especially in the know doggy people. T. -

I'd be slowly switching your pup over to Royal Canin Junior for her size/type... I've had issues with Advance in the past myself. I feed my Dane cross rescue pup Royal Canin Junior until she was around 6 months old, then switched to Nutro Lamb and Rice adult kibble. Worked well for me/her. As with your pup, we had no idea as to what size/weight my horse puppy was going to be... the guestimate based on her puppy size/weight gains was looking to be around 50kg... but it's now tracking to be somewhere in the 35kg range. She is now 16 months old and 28kg - lovely long Dane legs and in lovely condition (read no fat) - she is in no way a "small" dog... *grin* T. -
I hope you like Tiger pics - 'cos you're going to get one this week due to a spectacular photo session with Jalur at Symbio... Do you want one of him hanging off the bungee on the 4m climbing pole - or climbing halfway up it? Or would you like one of him cooling off in the pool being Mr Too Cute For Boots? Gotta run, have a dinner appointment... T.

My boy cost me $235 each time he snagged his nails... and that was "mates rates" at the vet clinic. He was a 47kg Rottie and needed to be anaesthetised for the procedures, so I'm reckoning all I paid for were the out of pocket costs to my vet... *grin* Glad your little man is going to be fine... can you pass on a cuddle from me please? T.

I have 2 bitches who will fight to the death at the slightest trigger - they could be fine together for ages, then something would set them off and it would be on. I have successfully been able to separate them for the past 4 years... but I live alone and don't have to train other family members to follow the strict no contact rules for those two dogs. The fun part is when I have to be away for more than a day. I have to board at least one of those two dogs so that whoever is feeding and exercising my dogs doesn't have to work the swapsy schedule. I couldn't rehome either of my two dogs due to knowing exactly what they are capable of when pushed - so I had to choose to do the separation thing or euthanaise one or both dogs... T.

The only real difference between having small or large dogs on the bed is how big a bed you will need... I have a queen sized bed, and we all fit quite nicely... *grin* Then again, got rid of the ex so I could fit more dogs on there... lol! T. -
I had a Rottie boy who used to do that regularly... 4 times in 6 months was his record. I used to put a piece of non-stick gauze over the toe, then pad with plenty of cotton wool, then bandage... until we could go to the vet and have it fixed up properly. The padding from the cotton wool made it easier for him to bear weight on that foot until we could have him seen to. T.

How To Train A Dog To Let Go Of A Toy!
tdierikx replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hmmm... maybe I'm speshul, but for a distance "give" I use "leave it"... T. -
I resize my photos to web friendly sizes before I upload them to Flickr or Photobucket also... faster uploads that way... *grin* My photos are resized to 1024 pixels on the longest side - which I do with a free program called Easy Thumbnails. I save the resized photos to a different directory than the originals so they don't overwrite the originals with the smaller version... alternately you can add a prefix or suffix to the filename so they save nicely in the same directory and leave the originals intact. Can't wait to see your pics FF! T.

How To Train A Dog To Let Go Of A Toy!
tdierikx replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've always used "give" to signify that the toy or whatever is in the mouth is mine. I think I trained my dogs too well though, none of them will actually play tug with me, they all spit it out as soon as my hand touches whatever they have in their mouths. T. -
I like the bling one very much... maybe she can alternate them? T.
