Training A Dog That Is Too Treat Focused ?
tdierikx replied to BC Crazy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Doggy Zen, look it up. I'm just stunned that this is even the slightest issue in a class that uses food, let alone that you were expelled! Don't instructors learn the most basic things any more? One of the instructors was the worst offender! Considering that I turned up with my Labrador wearing a check chain and advised that she was NOT to be fed treats... I think they were determined to prove me wrong about my own dog. Funnily enough, one of my other dogs would completely refuse treats at training - she was more interested in just getting the job done so we could go home and she could drape herself on the couch again... lol! The pip squeak was a foster pup I had at the time... she went to a lovely retired couple to live the life of a princess. T.

Council CAN put a control order on the dogs, which means they MUST be secured from causing harm or face more fines... Time to move up the food chain methinks... start beating on the local member's doors with your evidence of the injuries to your dogs, yourself, and council's apparent disinterest in doing anything to stop it happening again. Squeaky wheel time... T.

I must say that Maddie heals VERY nicely, doesn't she? Looking good so far considering the amount of damage actually done on the day. Have they secured the dogs from getting out yet? T.

Training A Dog That Is Too Treat Focused ?

HAHA. Shouldn't laugh but sounds like she won obedience there! All the perks with minimal work. Love her style. We call her the Labrahoover... she's a shocker for any type of food... *sigh* Thankfully, she loves getting praise almost as much, so as long as there isn't anyone handing out food willy-nilly, she's plenty focused on me when I want her to be. Training A Dog That Is Too Treat Focused ?

My Labrador was expelled from group obedience training when she learned with 100% accuracy that bumbags have food in them... and people will share it! I ended up going with praise and/or toys for her basic obedience training (had to be done by myself) instead. Took her back to the group training 2 years later... and she STILL knows with 100% accuracy that bumbags have food in them... but I could redirect her much better with the praise and toys by then. I roused on anyone trying to sneak her food from their bumbags, but apparently the ONLY way to train a dog is with food rewards... *sigh* We don't go to obedience any more... T. -
I don't think that it's necessarily his looks that mean he's not been adopted... he is a working dog cross... likely to be a handful in the wrong home. T.

I bet the bastard charged the owner for the "euth" too... If I have to let one of mine go to the Bridge, then I'm there when it happens... never any chance that a vet could mistreat my dog, or some bleeding heart vet nurse decide to "save/rescue" said dog. T.

Can you imagine my excitement at seeing Willow out in the enclosure? She grabbed a bag of popcorn and then scuttled back inside really quickly though... ratbag! Jantan put on more of a show by staying out for a good 20 mins. T.

Thanks peeps! Perse - Tigers sleeping is so passe... anybody can photograph them doing that, as they ARE sleeping most of the time... *grin* The fact that I go so often to "my" zoos means that I get a better idea of which animals are likely to be doing interesting things at whatever times of the day. Getting known by the keepers also doesn't hurt either, as they are likely to help make things easier by placing food in good photo op positions, placing toys or other enrichment in same, explaining the animals' personalities, etc... so we can judge when things may be about to happen also... Sunday at Taronga - the weather was horrible - cold and wet... but it made for less people, less glare on the glass, and more active animals that usually hide away when it's hot... The 600D is a nice piece of kit... combined with your obvious good eye for composition, I'm sure we'll be seeing a LOT ove great photos from you... Oh - and don't think that those kit lenses won't give you awesome shots either - they are excellent value for money and give great results too. I managed this in low light with the 55-250mm on my 450D - Sports preset... and the 600D does even better with the low light than my 450D, so crap light is no excuse... *grin* T.

Easy for them to say they would have taken the cats AFTER the fact... but what is done is done and we can't undo it. Time now for you to focus on going forward and learning from the past so that you don't find yourself (or the cats you are trapping) in similar circumstances ever again. Did you ask what they do if they are full and can't take in any more stray cats? Do they just fob people off to the pound, or do they "make room" in other ways? I think you'll probably find that they do euth under those conditions, but aren't about to advertise the fact. As for accepting 2 at a time - over what sort of timeframe will they take those 2 at a time? What happens to the others if you trap more than 2 in any given timeframe? Some serious considerations you will need to take stock of if you are going to make this new arrangement work the way you want it to methinks... Is there any possibility you may be able to convince the RSPCA to assist in TNR for a massively reduced rate? You offer to pay something towards the procedures required, and they don't ever have to see the cat again - or deal with it if it doesn't pass their temperament test... T.

Down beside or under the bed? Down behind chest of drawers or cupboard or desk? Where does he charge his phone... I'd start by looking near that area... Did he charge the battery before he used the camera? Can he remember where he charged it / plugged it in? T.

I'd be making him clean his room properly and find the charger he's "misplaced"... it's bound to be in there somewhere... T.

Thank you for all the great work you have done for Danes in need over the years sas... it is sad to see you closing your doors. T. -
You certainly have a great eye for a photo too... I'm sure we'll be seeing some VERY nice things from you in the near future... *grin* T.
