Ive been reading into this a fair bit of late, on the Prescribed Breeds Of Dogs from various states SA it says is an offence to give away, sell, or advertise the pure breeds of prescribed breeds of dogs: By law these dogs must be desexed, and wear a collar (as specified by the Dog and Cat Management Board), lead and muzzle when out in public. I would assume dogs can be aquired from interstate and housed in SA as the requirements suggest by the Dog and Cat Management Board. Many would also be x breeds or close relative breeds too, so I doubt they fall under any legislation thank goodness. I dont think they have any informed way of ID either. That seems the kicker in most states now.

Can I Fly My Amstaff From L.a. To Sydney On Qantas?
GeckoTree replied to amstaffcali's topic in General Dog Discussion
From everything I can find AKC registration does not mean anything to be able to inport a dog? why is that being trotted out? plenty of dogs that dont have any sort of registration are imported. Amstaffcali get everything you can in writing. Best of luck I hope it all works out for you and your dog. -
I have noticed that it's usually all about the constitutional rights in the US, its too bad Australia has no bill of rights, I think if we did it would be a lot easier to challenge any bad laws that are made. Power of the people and all that. Oh to be a republic of Australia and not a brittish colony.
-
Some very good points in that bill it's great, this part really stood out to me I think this would be true in most countries that have the BSL. I know I see more advertisments for them now than I ever did before it came about. I think they were actually quite a rare breed without a very large population back in the mid 90's, now a decade and a half on I think they would be 10 fold in numbers..

Sit, Fetch, Stay Or Die: The Pit Bull Ambassador Program
GeckoTree replied to shel's topic in General Dog Discussion
Quick question would other breeds such as CAO etc, pass that temperament test? Dog temperaments vary from breed to breed being bred for differing temperamets over many generations, so only docile dogs pass into adoption? not dogs with different breed temperament traits? I guess I am asking are breed temperaments a factor when making the decisions, Rodesian Ridgebacks temperament being aloof to strangers etc as example. Someone looking to adopt / save one, might be looking for a dog with that temperament as that is what the dogs have in the breed temperament standard. But not interested in a RR with the temperament of a more accepting to strangers lap dog breed might have for example. -
Admission This was from RSPCA 2004 called Clifford’s long road to recovery Clifford (known affectionately as ‘Cliffy’) has the support of many kind well-wishers who are following his progress after he was dumped from a vehicle onto a roadway at Ramsgate on September 15. He was thin, starving and covered in ulcers, some of which had been crudely hand stitched in a botched-up home sewing job – a cruel and extremely painful exercise. To those well-wishers, we say a very big ‘thank you’. And we particularly thank all those kind and caring people who have taken the time to help with a donation towards Clifford’s veterinary costs. We appreciate all the many ways people show they care. Because of his treatment, ‘Cliffy’ will never grow to his full potential, but we are pleased to report that his weight has now increased from 7.8 kg to 8.8kg and his wounds are starting to heal, although the deep pressure ulcers will obviously take some time to mend. He is enjoying interaction with staff and is undergoing rehabilitation to help heal some of his emotional scars. Clifford shows his joy and appreciation to every caring person he meets. He is very much loved by RSPCA staff and enjoys spending time in the Inspectorate office. He was even ‘blessed’ at this week’s Blessing of the Animals Ceremony at the shelter. We give thanks for the ways that animals like Clifford enrich our lives here at the RSPCA. There is something still missing, however, and that is more important information that will help bring his abusers to justice. The RSPCA Inspectorate is investigating some significant leads, however we still need anyone with information to step forward. With a successful prosecution, we may prevent another animal or even a person, from undergoing a similar ordeal. If you can help with any additional information relating to Clifford’s abandonment please contact the RSPCA on 02 9770 7555. All support is very much appreciated. If you use an internet archive you should be able to find everything written about him newspaper articles websites etc. I could find at least 7 pages from the RSPCA about him. i did not look at newspapers. ....

I am putting together a new first aid kit and looking for some dog friendly pain killers to go in it. I have read that buffered asprin is OK, and have used this for my dog in the past, but panadine or neurofen is not good? does anyone know any emergency type pain meds that can go into a first aid dog kit, apart from buffered asprin? Or is asprin really not good for emergency and so I should scrap it? If theres any vets or nurses that can shed some knowledge on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I believe some animals are human aggressive due to breed, for dog breeds the Fila Brasilero as one example have what is called "Ojeriza" toward strangers, that lends itself to human aggression out side of it's known family. A few other breeds come to mind who are often talked about aswell. I also believe the way a dog is raised has an impact on aggression, for example dogs unsocialised towards people outside the family may lead to distrustfull even aggressive dispositions, even dogs specifically trained to be distrustfull of strangers would have a higher level of showing aggression toward people.

I understand how people can be emotionally drained or even dissalusioned buy it all, when I was looking through the EDBA forum right back to the beginning there were some very knowledgable people posting who had deep insight into the cogs of the breed specific laws, but it all went silent about a year ago and I think their was a lot of filler topics previous to that for a while. I have spent many months reading through it all as it is a law that I cant work out, it just does not make any sence to me as a law that is able to be governed.
-
Somehow, I think this section has just become a ghost town, like the EDBA board has. I don't think you will get much, if any discussion by people who have true working knowledge about BSL on this forum anymore. I base my opinion on the closed thread, the webs full of information and FAQ's, I think a link section would be better, and not just links to state laws either.

Is there a picture of the dog? I'm curious to see what this bull terrier looks like, Bull terriers are a distinctive breed and dont resemble a Pit Bull at all. It sounds like his council wants to stitch him up one way or another, if they cant get him on having a restricted breed that is not following regulations, they may get him on dangerous dog declaration, the regulations are exactly the same arn't they? I feel sorry for the bloke, I hope they leave him alone now. If all this bSL stuff is only based on appearances, or I would rather say an illusion, as it seems to be, there would be many breed and X breeds that would be confused, what a god damn joke of a law!. -
