Obedience Proofing Games And Fun Exercises
Tassie replied to leopuppy04's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Bedazzled and Ptolomy have a great video clip of proofing heeling through toys etc with one of them squeaking the infamous isqueak  . I do heeling through/recall past toys etc, and containers of food - when things are going really well, the containers are open (good for Rally too). I'd suggest PMing Bedazzled and Ptolomy - just in case they don't see this thread. Oh - and I'm having fun playing with platforms and disc at the moment. Just neatening up fronts, finishes turns etc - again for Rally as well. Little bits of work - interspersed with crazy games, release to toys or "licky-pots" of food. The theory is thy never know when you're going to do something crazy - even in a ring set up. Disclaimer - my UD stuff is still a play/work in progress - although with play training, we're getting there - if ever we can sort of the blinking sit stay - it's not the OOS bit that's worrying him - just the sit. He can do it/has done it - but tends to do the typical BC down on sit stay . So working on strengthening tat - again, with lots of distractions - like working Kirra in front of him (being careful not to drop her  ), and releasing to a toy/ball throw behind him at random times - thanks Ptolomy. -

She's lovely. So very pleased to hear she is feeling better - and totally agree with the others who've said she obviously needed some more pain relief earlier. Hope you both can get some better sleep now. :) -
I could see a definite improvement - she's getting the hang of it now, and when she was started from the back of the treadmill, there was some reach and drive. When she gets stuck too close to the front, it's actually impossible for her to be doing the exercise effectively - her head comes up and her bum goes lower. Also - it looks to me as though the water level is a tad high - so she's getting a bit too much buoyancy, instead of just the resistance from the water. That's contributing to the front end going up a bit, which again makes it hard for the rear assembly to operate well. (Course the amount of coat and tail contributes to the buoyancy - her own personal flotation device - and no, I'm not suggesting you clip her ) I'm sure when I've watched a dog doing the u/w treadmill in Vic, they were able to start with the water level low, and gradually fill it as the dog was walking. Not sure if that's a possibility. And the fact that she's tired, would indicate that there's a fair amount of work going on.

for the UD and Open ..... about UDX. I know how frustrating UD can be, and seems like UDX is even worse. Think I'll just take my time and stay in Open forever.

+1. Something's not right, and you're entitled to be her advocate - who else is going to worry about her if not you. Trust your instincts. And good luck to you and your girl - hope it's sorted soon. ETF typo -
Personally, I do crate a puppy on the first night home - but I have the crate right next to my bed, so that the pup can hear my breathing, and I can reassure pup if necessary - and most important, so I can know when pup needs to be taken out to toilet. I take pup out on a light lead, wait for the toileting, praise lavishly, then return the pup to the crate with a biscuit, to go back to sleep. Oh, and I sometimes cheat, and delay bedtime until pupy is quite sleepy. If you're using a wire crate, or even an airline crate, I would cover the crate with a light polar fleece blanket or something, so it is really den like and cosy. And yes - in the daytime, keep working on making crates a pleasant place to be in. If you're lucky, your breeder will have done some crate training/separate sleeping training for a few days before you get the puppy - that makes life so much easier :D .

And just to muddy the waters some more ...... the Washington State University list of drugs which may be problematic for dogs with MDR1 mutation Everything I've read suggests that as DC says, a very, very low percentage - as in about 1% - of Border Collies have shown up with the mutation. The reports of ivermectin problems in BCs have apparently often come from farm situations, where for reasons of cost, farmers have dosed their dogs with sheep or cattle drench - diluted down, but not accurately.

Absolutely!!!! No way in hell would I let that happen to any dog of mine - let alone my reactive boy. I don't do any of the sort of weaving through dogs etc. that happens in some classses. I just melt away and take my boy for a wee or something like that, and come back in when it's safe. If it's appropriate, I might speak to the trainer afterwards to explain. You did the right thing - you know Zig, and you are his advocate.

Thanks for that DD. Must have a look. When I remember it, I use Runkeeper - but I can't get a side-by-side comparison - have to sort of flick from one screen t the next.

Nice to see the speed coming. And good to see that your cunning plan worked with Jovi TO.

Yay for the TDX. On to Ch now!!

So very glad to hear about the found doggies. Hope Rocky is found soon too. Rory has been getting extra cuddles while Sylvie has been missing :-)

And there is a beautiful DVD called A Year in the life of a Working Sheep Dog ....or something like that. Set on a farm on the coast of North Devon, with stunning scenery..is a lovely story as well, and the work done by the dogs is amazing.

Aaaawww ..... that is so sweet. Hope the boy is feeling better soon, and hope you can catch up on sleep tonight. ET fix predictive text mistake :-).

Ah OK - so pretty much like our Stand for Examination - except that in SFE, judge doesn't do mouth, tail or testicles  . CCD is on lead - 75 cm away, CD off lead - about 2 metres away. CDX - about 5 metres, Ud - at least 5 metres away - but dogs are in a stay line, in a stand - approx 1.5 metres apart - judge goes aloong the line - if there's a full line up of 10 dogs it can take a while . The examination is very light to start, then becomes more thorough. Points lost for each foot up to 4, when it becomes a break from position zero.

Thanks Mirawee.

What does the temperament test involve? And had to laugh about the heeling requirements - I didn't know that :) .

Hey guys - especially Perth NOR. I don't think Rory's breeder will mind my linking here. Rory's daughter has been missing since Saturday. She's on the Pets of Perth Lost and found I think - and on Gumtree Lost. If you know anyone in or near the area, it would be great if you could alert them to her. ETfix typos

 about the mouldy stuff. Oh thanks for that info - It's interesting how Oz decided to model more or less on AKC. And our Rally rules are based on the Canadian ones. Way back - 15 year or so, you had to have a CD before you could start doing tracking - which made no sense, since tracking is on harness and lead , Now all our disciplines are separate.

+1 ... . The vets must love the worry worts like us :D - but it's so much better to be safe than sorry..... Hmmm now what special treats would be good for Staffyluv :D ,

 Good point, I think it would be the same here, a minor deduction as long as she does sit without an extra command :) We need to pass with at least 90% of points in all exercises to get the CDX (recall to heel, drop on recall, heel off lead, temperament test, retrieve, scent discrimination, sit stay 1 minute, stand stay 1 minute, down stay 5 minutes handler out of sight) I sometimes put a tug in the back of my pants too, but after one go with it Elsie turns it into a horrible dribbly mess blech! Boo about the terracotta bowl!! Yep - my tug gets a bit slobbery too - but it's all part of the fun!! And it can't be worse than sardines in the pocket a la Ptolomy  Gosh, that's a tough ask for your CDX. We only have to get at least 170/200, with at least 50% one each of the individual exercises - and you can only afford very minor movement on the group stays. Our CDX stays are 3 minute sit (handler out of sight) and 5 minute down (handler out of sight) .... hate the 3 minute sit - BCs so like to drop - they can't see the point in sitting  . We don't get scent discrim until UD - next class up.
