  1. I'm sure they can - at least in a broad sense. My BC's best friend is a Golden Retriever, and he gets very excited when we're out and about and sees a Golden, thinking it might be his friend. (Mind you, he confuses yellow Labs with Goldens from a distance. ) I think, at least for some breeds, there's also an almost hard wired recognition of a particular body shape and stance as being a possible problem. For many Border Collies, the upright and forward leaning stance of dogs such as Boxers, Rotties etc. can cause a wariness, even if theyu've had no particular bad experiences. And BCs are like beagles - a bit breedist - happy to recognise their own breed. :D JMHO.
  2. Yes it is, tho it sounds like he is holding steady so that is good news. from all of us who have been through it before. What SSM said. Hang in there.
  3. :D I did something like that at the Stacy Peardot-Goudy seminar a couple of years ago. After a day or so of listening to Satcy calling the see-saw a teeter (of course), I was running a sequence with Kirra and directed her to the 'teeter' - good little girl was obviously reading the handling, not the verbal, 'cos she didn't miss a beat. :D
  4. I'm probably not the one who should be replying to you, since I lost my first Border Collie to this horrible ailment 9 years ago - he was 12 and 3/4. OTOH, his PCV was only about 18 I think, so he was much sicker than your boy. Dogs can recover from this - but unfortunately it does have a high mortality rate. From what my vet said, the initial treatment may be transfusion, and high doses of immuno suppressants. The treatment in itself is pretty nasty. When it's acute like this, it comes as such a shock, since you get virtually no warning - like your boy, mine went from being apparently fit to being very very sick within a couple of days. I do wish you the very best for your boy. Thinking strong thoughts for you both.
  5. I have always used the 10mg Phenergan for the dogs and they can have one twice a day if necessary. Yes, my vet recommended 10mg Phenergan to have on hand - for Border Collies. Glad Oscar is coming good, MAO - they love to worry us, don't they.
  6. FWIW - Greg Derrett ahd us starting off with the stationary flatwork - similar to what Kavik showed - only he had us do it more slowly - and working up to crossing the line much further back, marking the head turn as we crossed the line, then rewarding from the hand nearest the dog - still facing forward. Then he moved on to flat work dog driving ahead (if they would) for a toy. And then with jumps - similar to what Vickie was showing.

  8. To deal with problems of handlers coming with inappropriate equipment, I have a bag with an assortment of old spare collars and leads, so that I can set them up with appropriate loan equipment for their first class. ET say That should have been spare, not spar
  9. She's super pretty, leopuppy - and smart - you definitely have to get her out there in the obedience ring as well as everything else she does.
  10. Lovely! I love it when my cat takes Rory(BC)'s head between her paws and starts licking his face. And he's taken to licking her bottom for her - she lets him - I think he's discovered where the 'kitty crunchies' come from .
  11. I always say that in BCs at least, the boys tend to be more open - what you see is what you get - while with the bitches, it can be a case of "Yeah, leave a message, and I'll get back to you". I've trialled males (desexed at about 9 months) in obedience and tracking, with a bit of agility. My agility girl was desexed at about 7 months - she doesn't believe in obedience as a discipline (not enough action ) but has done well for me in agility and tracking. My current boy is the first entire male I've had. Haven't done a lot with him yet - but he certainly falls into the "want to please" but the boy brains can get in the way - like - I knew it yesterday, but I can't remember it today - but I love you anyway .

  13. So sorry to read this, Kelpie-i. What a huge hole Buddy will leave in your life after all those years, but as someone else said, what a testament that long life was to your love and care for him. As the days go on, the sad and frightening memories of today will dim, and be replaced by the great memories you must have of what you and he did together. Let your other dogs comfort you, and you comfort them.
  14. Mine basically don't care. When I'm using their soft travel crates in dog-friendly houses, they will often swap around. At home, Rory has a big PP40 sort of crate beside my bed (left open now he's a big boy :D ). Kirra usually respects that, although every now and then she'll go in there just to nark him. They don't call them bitches for nothing. :D It always fascinates me how dogs generalise the concept of crates, and will be quite happy to go in any sort of crate (sometimes not even belonging to their owner ) . It does reinforce the thought that they see the crate as a nice den.
  15. I'll second that thanks to Troy. Being a performance person up till now, I didn't even know about the Pointscore until my breeder suggested it. My BC 'baby' ended up No.3 in Working Dog Rising Star in Tas - I was thrilled with that, especially since he's pretty lightly shown. It was great fun watching the competition. Congrats to all those lovely dogs who won their categories - very welll deserved.

  19. Good advice from Megan - and yes, two different words is good - one for 'come back to me" and the other for the forml obedience front. I get my puppy class people to play the collar grab game - make a game of touching at first, progressing to grabbing the dog's collar, and reward handsomely - progress slowly - not all in one session. I also get them, when they're starting little recalls on lead, always to reach their hand under the dog's neck and touch the collar while they are treating for the coming back. So the dog gets used to the idea that with the informal recall, the good things don't come till your hand has touched the collar. Make sure that you release the dog after treating for coming - use your go free word, and let the dog go off to the end of the lead again - or have more independence on the long line - maybe a little game (still with the long line on - then call again, touch collar/grab collar - treat - ... rinse and repeat. The idea of this is that coming to you does not ean the end of fun. And my two do have a 'lead time' cue - I also will reward them for coming to me (either because they've been called, or because they're just checking in) several times during a walk.
  20. Very happy to share Kendall - we Capricorns gotta stick together. Sure do! Happy birthday, pf (and Kendall). Hmmm 50 - a very nice age - I think - not sure I actually reemmber it Keep yourself nice now, pf.
  21. to the committee - it's a big job - but it's nice to see that you'll attract some mainlanders. Sadly, won't be there. I have to go to Melbourne for a family gathering on the Sunday - and because of the flight times, dogs have to go into kennels on the Saturday and get picked up on the Monday. Safe travelling, rajacadoo family - the dogs and I went over on the Spirit for a week in Melbourne over Christmas - our 4th return trip for 2009 . More often than not it's a really smooth trip. capanash - and others. There's a great place to exercise dogs when you get off the boat - at the end of Tarleton St in East Devonport - used to be a tip - now it's a lovely park area, bordered by the sea - nice bitumen path winding through it. You get to it by turning left at the first set of traffic lights you come to, then go straight to the end of the roan - about a k.
  22. What they've all said. So nice to see you back and to know that you and the girls and the dogs, especially Leo are safe. Here's hoping 2010 will be a great year for you all.
  23. A thing we used to do when we had enough UD dogs was to do a scent discrimination exercise with different coloured painted dumbbells as the articles. We would each leave our dogs, show the audience the colour of our dumbbell, then go out and put the dumbbell down in the same small area. We'd then take turns to send our dogs to retrieve their own coloured dumbbell - with the commentator doing a spiel about how dogs maybe weren't colour blind after all. Usually went down well, and if it goes pear-shaped, with a good commentator you can cover it. And as has been said, audiences can enjoy the 'failures'. We did an agility demo at a Hobart Royal one year - did it with the experienced dogs first, then had a couple of inexperienced ones, who each wore L plates. Crowd loved it (dogs were still under recall control - just not agility control - it was 'make your own course'.
  24. The dogs and I stayed at Valla Beach Dolphin Tracks on the way back south last year. Might be booked out at the moment though.
  25. RottyLover01 Two words for people who make comments - Lance Armstrong. :D
