Linky please??? 'cos I'm having trouble finding it. TIA ETA - sorry - never mind - found it now. Ta.

Sincere condolences on your loss. He looked like such a lovely man.

Only been to Kepala once, but I loved it. When we're over in Melbourne, I like to take the dogs swimming - no doggy pools down here in the apple isle. Lately we've been swimming at Woofpurnay - it's close to where we stay.

As bedazzledx2 says - it is a management problem IMO. I deal with it in my BC bitch - now 8 - by trying to classically condition her - hear/see a car - look at me for a treat. Needless to say, she's on lead anywhere near a road. It works about 99% of the time - so much so that if she hears the wind in the trees sometimes, she'll look at me, trying to persuade me it's a car coming. BUT - I can never take it for granted - just today, it was the added dimension of the sound of 4WS tyres on a wet road that triggered her to attempt to chase - thank goodness she was on the lead. For the most part, my boy is not a serious car chaser - though every now and again he'll think it's OK to lunge after a truck - so I use the same management strategy with him.

Herding Instinct Test Kcc Park 27th & 28th March
Tassie replied to Starkehre's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Meant to say before that I was at Erskine Park doing some practice some years ago now, and saw a lovely Rottie pup working very nicely - wonder if that was the one that Janba's talking about - it certainly seemed to have all the makings. -
Good thinking 99 - er, I mean Bully

YIkes - let me say here and now - my bit ends when the last bag is posted - I am useless at photos, collages and anything technical! Me too - now, Ness does a lot of photo stuff and youtube. And valleyCBR, that shape idea is a great one. Could put Tassie on the map - the island - not me .
-
You know what we should do - we should all take photos of our dogs with their new i-squeaks, and then make up a collaage photo or something to send to CR. - maybe put them together for something on youtube.

Starting with a lesson at Tallara would be a great idea IMHO. It will give you an idea of what to expect, and you will be able to get some advice on how to proceed. -
Well done to you for working through this, and getting to the stage where you can enjoy walking with your pup. It will be a good springboard for all her other training too, since you know, and she knows, that you can do it.

My Kirra sends very best wishes for a good recovery to little puppy Kirra - who is totally, totally gorgeous. And hi to you Armahani.
-
It's so encouraging to know I'm not the only one with a screaming tanty throwing bitch. If we were closer, I couild do the same - leave Kirra in the car and take Rory towards where she knows there's agility equipment - then you'd have two 'puppy being murdered' distractions . (And Ptoloomy - the good news - Kirra has turned 8 - and she STILL does it - so don't think Cider is going to grow ouit of it any time soon. .)

Just did a search crate training puppy on my trusty www.dogpile.com search engine, and it threw up lots of good articles on getting started. I'd put a blanket over the crate - leaving the front open - and using a very high value treat (and/or toy) - preferable one that the pup doesn't get routinely. This can be the special crate reward. Initially, I'd just be leaving the pup in there to enjoy the treat - say chicken wing - for a few minutes - if necessary, you could sit nearby and have a coffee. Then invite the pup out again. Rinse and repeat as often as possible.

Beautiful picture - definitely worth a brag. And lp - the new word I invented to describe your Leo and Kinta was meant to be 'gorgeous' - black keyboards at night - not a good idea .

Like a lot of others, I didn't know about crates when I had my first dogs. Now I start mine in crates as soon as I get them - in fact with my current boy, his crate training started once his littermates that were leaving had gone to their new homes. His lovely breeder started crating him and his brother and sister separately, so that they were quite used to spending time alone at night. This helped him to take his 10 hour confinement on his flight(s) to my place like a little trooper - no stress, no fuss. Like Jules and others, mine are crated at trials and shows, as puppies crated at night next to my bed to assist toilet training (in fact my boy still has his crate there - but with the door open now he's a big boy ), crated for safety in the car, and crated at night when we're staying in dog-friendly accommodation. It can also reduce stress if they have to be crated for medical reasons, or at the vet. I've said it before, but it always amazes me how dogs generalise the concept of 'crate' - I can only think it's because they regard it as a den. So mine are perfectly happy to go into soft crates, wire crates of plactic crates. They don't even care whether the crates are theirs or no. There are threads on DOL on the how to do it, and you'll also find some good stuff elsewhere on the net.

Sounds like you guys had a fantastic weekend lp - go the gorgwoud Leo and Kinta.

Thanks Ellz - yes - I'm very happy with him - for a dog who was coming over on Limit as a performance prospect, he's turning out pretty nice. Gotta work on that tail now - thinking of plaiting sinkers into it . He's having way too good a time out there - but hey, I'm happy with that rather than the opposite.
-
Yes - it was a lovely day out - made even better by meeting the adorable Roger and Flame - what a gorgeous pair of babies. (though I worry whether they need more socialising so they won't be shy of people . ) Gotta love them - they spot you, and you're their new best friend. They really are beautiful looking pups, and their natures are to die for. Love those photos, too.

Waaaaay to go Jess. and Darcy. That's certainly a big brag.

Obedience Club Vaccination Requirements
Tassie replied to nadz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Beagie wrote Don't know about Rotties, but AFAIK, there's nothing special about requirements for Border Collies. My vet is happy to look at titre testing my Border Collies, and not necessarily vaccinating annually. Would probably still get KC done, as they're around a lot of dogs (and yes, I know it'e no complete guarantee ) -
Puppy Of The Year And Tkc Show Launceston
Tassie replied to Tassie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ellz wrote .Absolutely - it was such a big ask for Miss I, especially in All Breeds on the Sunday - and she really listened and concentrated so hard - maintained her focus even when the naughty Rory man was playing up in the class run off - she didn't get flustered or cross with him. And she was getting great focus and attention from Rory - well, except for when his boy brains kicked in . And most important of all to me - Rory had a great time - loved working with her. So thanks again. -
Well - maybe that's not true. Have a look at some of the stories in this recent thread..

Good job Kaye and Bailey. A couple of suggestions about the sitting straight in front: - you can try throwing food - get him to come to you but then throw food behind you, through your legs, and tell him to 'get it' - then you can turn and face where he is, and rinse and repeat - every now and agiain, as he comes right close, you can treat for a sit in front. - sitting in a chair with your legs apart, reward him when he comes to sit between your knees. My best recommendation for getting the retrieve going is Shirley Chong's method.

Puppy of the year was a Weimaraner - Ch Ghostwind Perfect Picture. Runner up was the Rottweiler Sahne Rave On Blue Genes. (I'm pretty sure I got that right - the winner is right, anyway.)
