  1. I'm a cheap skate - have BD and Doogue - but rarely use them. My #1 is the Hercules zip snack bags from the supermarket (where you get the sandwich bags etc.) Very easy to use from a pocket, and hold a good amount of treats - and you can prepare bagsful when you have time, pop them in the freezer, then pull them out when you need them. I prefer the Hercules brand to the Glad ones - better zip and stronger.
  2. Just sending best wishes for your lovely pup and a good outcome at the vet. Would think OCD is unlikely in a Border Collie, though I guess anything is possible. Could be some sort of soft tissue damage - my BCs have variously had sprained toes. As one vet said - the good news is, it's not a fracture - the bad news is it's not a fracture. Soft tissue injuries tend to take longer to heal (in us and in dogs) and need rest . Let's know how you get on. And if you need to, don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion from an orthopaedic specialist.
  3. I have a hard wood one from this store - emailed her with the breed of my dog and a rough indication of size and received a dumbell which is a perfect fit. Used to use a plastic one but noticed Darcy mouthed it a lot while retreiving. She stopped when I started using the hard wood one. Yep - got dumbells from here too - nice ones - bit is a bit larger, so doesn't roll round like the plastic ones.
  4. No personal experience, but there are some listed on this link. I think the first one is run by someone who is associated with the local dog club - but I could be wrong about that.
  5. And .. to participate in any ANKC trial, you also need to be a member of your local ANKC affiliate body - e.g. Dogs NSW, Dogs Vic.
  6. And handled very nicely by you (and by Mr R!) . Missed seeing the lovely Woger though - but well done on your day. Perfect day for showing, wasn't it.
  7. It is very likely it will be an ANKC recognised sport where you can earn titles come January 1, 2011 And as soon as that happens, I am pretty sure some WA clubs will offer rally trials because a lot of people have been talking about it and training it over here I'm going to do it with my girls Edit: I accidentally put 2012 instead of 2011 You might have been being psychic putting 2012, RS. AFAIK it won't be in officially until January 2012 - apparently they decided they needed time to refine the rules, train judges etc. SOme states were ready to go, but others not. I've been having some fun playing round with it with the lil big man. Hmmmm - have to teach him to do the finish right, and the pivot LAT - I'd been being faithful to my Derrett/Garrett BCL training, so he doesn't think he's allowed to go behind me ;) - but then I guess I want to teach him that for DWD anywyay .
  8. Border Collie x lab sounds quite likely. The classic white markings tend to throw through from BCs - does he have a white tip to his tail too? I might have said x Kelpie, but the webbed feet suggests maybe lab. He's gorgeous looking anyway -= and will give you lots of fun training. Hope he recovers well (and quickly) - and yes, I would take him rides in the car.
  9. Lots of great achievements for DOLers this year. I didn't do a wish list -- I'm superstitious and didn't want to moz myself but it has been quite a successful year Kirra ADM2 ADO3 JDO4 SPDX and a 6th place in Masters Jumping at Nationals - and enough other quallies there to earn me Best Senior Female Handler award :D and T.Ch! And we've had her first go at Track and Search, which she really enjoys (gotta teach her that a track can follow along a gravel path ) Now - somr more agility, more track and search, and get a bit more serious with HTM. Rory Lots of Reserve Challenges, several Best of Breeds, a couple of Runner Up in Group :D /class in Group - and finished his Show Champion title with a 20 point BOB/RUBIG/Inter in Group at Launceston Royal. And he's a daddy . Now we can conentrate a bit more on getting some letters after his name - playing with obedience, tracking, agility and ET maybe next year or the year after. Oh, and some Rally and HTM for him too. (Pity I need to work 4 days a week to support their little doggy luxuries like interstate travel and staying in dog-friendly houses. )
  10. There's one at Berrima (on the Old Hume Highway) I found - probably on stayz or takeabreak - but didn't use - looked OK and Berrima is lovely. A tip for Sydney - if you're just going through - organize a visitor pass for the M7 motorway - you can do it through RACV - or probably online - quite cheap - and brilliant for bypassing Sydney. Takes out all but a few km of big traffic roads - you do have to do a bit on Pennant Hills Rd/Cumberland Highway between the M2 and the F3 Newcastle freeway - but it'spretty well signposted. ETA - the Berrima one is on Takeabreak - but has gone up and may be 2 night min. Here's one in Bowral says it is 1 night OK House in Bowral
  11. I would just make very sure that your second contact on the CAR database is someone with a landline, or a mobile which is pretty reliable - in case you happen to be travelling in an area with no mobile coverage. And put both phone numbers on the collar ID too. Lucky dog - ideal life - travelling with his humans :p
  12. Aaaaaw SnT - Agility training - what's that? Oh - I remember - something I should start doing again now tracking season is finished - preferably before the trials at the Royal next week - and in between getting Rory ready for the show . @ Arrow - too late for the warning - I'm an addict already :p trouble is I'm addicted to other dog disciplines as well .... you've heard the phrase, Jack (Jill) of all trades, master of none ... that would be me.
  13. Could be a sort of heat stress. Border Collies sometimes will have an episode like this, especially if they're working hard and it's a bit warm. Dunking in tepid water helps in this case - and then keeping them quiet for a while - which it sounds like you're doing. Another thought just occurred to me - friend's dog (another BC - 8 and very fit) turned out to have heart trouble, so it might be worth having a vet visit with Angel, even if she looks as though she's recovered.
  14. still new not sure what you mean nikkie, it means BlueStaff has sent you a Private Message (pm). To read it, go to the My Controls tab up towards the top of the page - right hand side - click on that, and then click on Inbox, and you should see the message.
  15. Gotta love those aha! moments - and don't forget - he does have boy brains.
  16. Thanks for the heads up on this, Bully - I've been thinking about getting that book for years, but haven't got around to it - just ordered it - too good a bargain to miss. Thanks.
  17. Yep - Beagles can certainly do agility. The people who have Best Friends holiday camp in Vic had a couple of super beagles who did super well in obedience, agility and tracking. It's really all about focus and relationship.
  18. Phew - go away showing for a few days and there are brilliant brags from everywhere :D Congrats to everyone (and commiserations as appropriate.) I know this is the training thread, but I'm going to put a little conformation brag in here 'cos I'm amongst friends - and some of you know the dog in question . I'm stoked to announce that my lil big man Rory (Winpara Soul Dreamer) got a 20 point BOB, Runner Up Best in Group 5, Intermediate in Group 5, and was shortlisted for Intermediate in Show (won by a Weimaraner in the end) - all at Launceston Royal under an international judge. And the 20 points took us over the 100 we needed for his Australian Championship He can keep showing while he and his lovely junior handler want to - but I can get on with what I got him for originally - the performance stuff - although - wait - that means I have to start actually doing some systematic training.
  19. :D Too much time on your hands pf - it's gorgeous!
  20. IMHO you are right to feel frustrated. Bedazzled is right about trying to make you get the pup to run before she can walk. She is still a baby puppy, and it sounds like this might be a beginners class rather than a puppy class? For me a puppy class should be concentrating on relationship building and encouraging focus and attention and showing the pup and the handler how to learn. Little steps. Oh, and BTW, kids and dogs on windy days ...... :D ... ask any school teacher about windy days.
  21. Spencer is owned and handled by another agility competitor (it's a take-over guys ) . She's a newbie to conformation, and this was only Spencer's second show and his second BPIG! Thanks so much for the congratulations for my little big man Rory (now to be known as Ch Winpara Soul Dreamer) - I'm so proud of him - especially since he was also shortlisted for Inter in Show - eventually won by the Wei. I'm really grateful to Winpara for trusting me with Rory, and making it possible for me to show him, and grateful to all those friends who have helped us, and especially to his lovely junior handler - she's a star. Grateful too to the judges who have recognised him.
  22. I have a similar problem with Rory - too much 'steady feet' game, I think - so he has a nice agility-type stay - can hold it with me moving away, and doing various stuff - but obedience stay, either on or off lead, with me not moving - hmmmm - yes - still a work in progress . And he's started doing the dropping out of the sit in obedience stays - blinking BC :D . I think I've mentioned one trial I did in Vic with my Sam - Open sit stay - 10 dogs in the ring - 3 BCs - 2 of them UD titled - came back out from the hide - 3 out of the 10 down - yep - sll the 3 BCs. I was quite pleased with Sam, cos apparently he was the lasst one to go down - must have looked along and decided it was a BC unione rule . With Sam, I worked really hard at getting him to understand that 'sit' was a good position to be in - but I obvioulsy did a bit too much of that - cos every now and then he would pop up as I returned to him from a long down (even a 10 minute one in the old UD
