Priceless! and sadly sooooooo true at times

Oh I am sure I would learn so much from organising a dog show. I couldn't possibly have any experience at such things even though I have been (in the past) head co-ordinator for five years for a march that occurs through the streets of Sydney City. Work involved included - liasing with council to close George St and other main streets in the city, liasing with police and supplying route information and requirements as well as understanding our legal requirements. Organinsing with council for multiple parks to be available (including Hyde Park) and set up with various concert stages and PA equipment, generators, stalls and catering, all which required installation and set up with only 3 hours access prior. Arranging for international artists to be flown into Sydney with pick up and accomodation as well as tours of Sydney. Then trying to organise and marshall a crowd of up to 20,000, we made these events a success all with the help of a very small team of inexperienced people who weren't all that organised at times LOL. Prior to the event we organised fundraiser dinners for 500+ people and organised the donation of charity auction items to enhance a very small budget. I consider myself lucky to have done all that I did and never did I want congratulations for doing it or demand thanks, I never whinged about the 100's of hours of mantime it took to do it, nor did I hesitate signing up for it year after year. I forgot to mention as well as the above we had to design a yearly theme print posters and t-shirts along with other merchandise for sale on the night, try to obtain free advertising and exposure, arranging press releases and media interviews, invitations to guest speakers and co-ordinating the speakers (ie, timing scheduling for the duration), there was so many things involved and we did this annually. So I guess a dog show would be so much harder than that NOT! Why is it that some people assume that everyone else is a moron who has no idea how hard things are to organise? Sheesh

If there was never a threat to my entries being cancelled why was I told a refund cheque would be issued and I would receive it Mon or Tues at the latest! Do you really think they would let me exhibit for free? I am glad you would "be more than happy" to be a member of this club given you are in Victoria. I have had private contact from quite a few members - some of whom have been members for over 30years! - and they wonder why they bother to pay the yearly membership and are saddened by the state of this club now days! So, if this is one of the easiest clubs to deal with I am surprised that the Dobermann breed still continues in Australia. From my experiences with some of the members of this club, we have not experienced such a welcome. I am not saying "all" members are the same, just "some". Although since the banter in the "other forum" I have had some really lovely private contacts from those in the Victoria Dobermann Club asking me to join there Club. My feelings are - just because something has been acceptable for the past 2 shows or however many, does not mean that it cannot be improved for the future shows. If they really needed help with organising this National then they could've approached non-members to see if they would like to join or to find out if non-members would be willing to help out in anyway - which i would have had no hesitation in doing, and will do in the future!

UPDATE #2 OK well now it seems that my entries have not been cancelled or refunded - just as well LOL I have had loads of very lovely people send me messages of support. :D I still can't believe that others are so happy to leave their dogs outside or be left outside looking after their dogs and missing the spectacular that should be the main focus of a National Speciality Show. Oh well I'll stick to my dogs company as it is way more inviting than "some" that attend dog shows anyway LOL! I have been labelled a trouble maker now and am contemplating printing a t-shirt to wear at the show that simply says "Here's Trouble!" LMAO Thanks again to all who commented.

Thanks to all who have commented. Bisart, if only the club was more encouraging to new members rather than giving the cold shoulder and rudeness we endure as newcomers. I would have been more than happy to help organise anything that was asked of me and inject energies, enthusiasm and even financial donations. UPDATE ON MY ENTRIES FOR THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW The club is now saying that a refund will be issued for my entries - & "that is the end of the matter"! It is a sad day when a Club cannot appreciate another persons opinion and is so touchy to criticism. Then they wonder why people don't want to join their club!! Ahhh Derrr I wonder!!! Needless to say this will continue as I do not want my entries cancelled and refunded! It is about time the members of DOGS NSW lobbied DOGS for an indoor arena to be built at Erskine Park for all clubs to use! For our state not have one should be an embarrassment.

Thank you capanash for that great information & everyone else for your inputs Sadly the "powers that be" in the Dobe Club of NSW seem to feel that it is acceptable to have the exhibitors left outside with dogs in trailers and crates. Apparently the last 2 times the National was held in Sydney it was acceptable to have a no dogs inside venue and therefore it made no effort to find somewhere the could outdo the previous years. I am beyond annoyed that it is being held like this, because I love my dogs and will not leave them outside so that I can go & watch the showring. I would love to be able to watch the shows but won't be able to. What really annoys me is within 12 hours of posting my question here - I was able to find an ideal venue just around the corner from the venue they have, imagine if I had a couple of years to organise it LOL - but we all know the best place to find answers from the experts is DOL It is being held at http://www.penrithsportsstadium.com.au/copy.asp?id=about which looks like a run down basketball court to me. Thanks again for answering my question & for letting me vent LOL

Ain't it always the way I can't tell you how many "extra" poos I pick up at my off leash dog park hoping that the council never has reason to change the park to "NO DOGS ALLOWED" like sooo many areas around Sydney. It is sad that the some spoil it for the rest. Thanks for replying

Hi All Just wondering if people in Sydney could tell me where there is an arena or places indoors that allow you to hold a dog show and have all the exhibitors able to crate their dogs inside. I understand most National Specialities require the event to be held indoors and am curious to know if there are places that allow the dogs to be crated inside. We are about to attend a National Speciality show that requires all the dogs not being shown or marshalled to be kept outside in crates or trailers. With Sydney being such a big place I am sure there are places that would allow the dogs inside. Thank you in advance for your input

It is important to wash the bedding out as well as spraying the areas the dog is in carpet or hardfloor daily. Perhaps change the bedding for something that isn't fabric (like a shadecloth type material dog bed that you can hose. Also spraying the yard with the dame surface type spray (you can get low irritant ones) daily for about 2 weeks will also kill any fleas and eggs. I believe it is important to make sure the areas the dog is in (and other areas as you may transfer eggs on your shoes) are treated even more than you treat your dog. I have only had a flea plague once when we had a friends dog sleep over & I also found spraying my girl with repelX daily was great as it is a deterant to new fleas trying to get on the dog and to any eggs that hatch, it is citronella based so a bit more pleasant than some of the flea treatments. Talk to your vet about doing the frontline fortnightly for about 3 applications as it is the standard treatment for an infestation. Good luck with it all - update us on how you go with all the treatments - it isn't fun but the reward of a flea free dog is a joy
-
That is the best news Thanks for the update & I will look forward to pics of Henry Did you ring the vet and give them a bit of what for? I hope you did
-
I would wash the dog very well now - don't leave it to absorb. In my opinion the dog is too young to risk leaving it on the skin. I would also be contacting your vet and asking them "WTF??" perhaps reminding them of how important it is to LISTEN to the client especially for important information such as weight and age.. I am sure you can also report them your states governing vet authority.

Is this to groom your 4 month old Pom? I am of the understanding that you should never touch a Pom's fur if you want it to stay that beautiful lion fluff ball. Once scissored it never recovers the same soft fluffiness.

So, just out of curiosity - did you ask about the yearly heartworm injection? Did you go ahead with it while you were there?
-
Thanks for the advice Gretel. Will discuss with the vet and probably get hers and Shiraz's proheart done tomorrow then and do the vaccinations on the 1st. Please seriously reconsider the yearly heartworm, giving a chewable tablet once a month is a far better option (I do mine on the 1st of every month and mark the calendar so it can't be forgotten) The yearly injection has had a huge amount of "side effects" and I wouldn't ever consider it. The vet won't always tell you the "best" advice for those kinds of treatments so perhaps asking some of the breeders here and heeding their advice would be wise.

I also give 2 capsules of salmon oil to my Dobermanns and add an omega oil blend to their BARF diet. http://greenpet.com.au/pet-shop/cart.php?t...;category_id=76 (also in smaller sizes) I firmly believe that it is what you put on the inside that gives them the best shiny coat & no dry skin. Also we give them a very small spray of mink oil - which is a spray we buy from petcetera store at the shows I guess it would be available online if you don't show in sydney. I have found that to be excellent for glossing them up in the ring. if only there was something I could spray on myself to make me a better handler LOL

If you breed from a dog with an undescended testicle you may be perpetuating that trait which is not good! I am with the others who wonder - how is that the pick of the litter when that breed has sooooo many health problems associated with it. To be the pick it has to be "perfect!" - is the breeder aware that you intend to breed this dog, or will she have you on a "breeders terms" contract and she will arrange for him to be a stud.

Chicken Frames are great and left whole can be entertaining for a minute or two LOL Lamb necks cut up the middle length ways are great and take a while to chew up. Also Lamb brisket and beef brisket can be great as they can be totally consumed. If you have a good butcher you can ask for lamb chine bone which is very low fat and as mentioned a beef chuck bone is like a toothbrush for dogs. I think daily feeding of bones is very important from a young age as it helps to strengthen the jaw and teeth and keep the teeth very clean and strong. I don't understand why people are so afraid of feeding bones and a natural diet rather than 'pet poison - processed dog foods' it isn't hard to feed a dog well, after all we humans wouldn't like a diet of dry biscuits - would we?

I just got a quote to get insurance on my girl and it is only $41 per month with is not as much as I thought. So my girl is now insured and that is another thing of my 2010 Todo list thanks megan_

In theory if we all put the money away it would be ideal - but the fact is people won't put it aside and then it really does break the bank when you have something major you need treated. I have a friend with 3 dogs that spent over $15,000 in vet bills last year and that has prompted me into taking out insurance on mine, it is on my new year's todo list so I am glad to have that good report on PetPlan and will look into it next week. With my last dog when he was diagnosed with bone cancer I told my vet that "money is no object - please just make hime better" thankfully she was not unscrupulous and told me that there wasn't really anything that could be done, another vet may have just drained the kitty to take advantage. So I think insurance is a great idea - after all we insure our cars and house and contents so why not the pets.

I use a dremel to do my dogs nails and have found the following link very helpful to get the right shape. http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/dob...mel/dremel.html They show how you can actually trim the front part of the nail as well as the underside. I hope you find this helpful

Yes I forgot to mention that I do add some veggies to their evening meal (unless I am in a hurry or just lazy LOL- then it is just the dog log and supplements) Normally I will add grated carrot, grated zucchini, baby spinach leaves or grated apple to the meal as well as the supplements. My dogs eat all fruit and veges so I am no longer able to eat an apple or an orange (mango/banana/berries) without two faces looking starved to death blowing bubbles wanting some too, so it is a sharing caring kind o house LOL

I am a purist BARF feeder and have not used the premade patties because they seem very expensive and I find that with a little bit of prep - maybe half an hour a month I can have frozen weighed out servings available at a very low cost. Depending on the type of dog you have - I am feeding 2 Dobermanns so I make up about 40Kg of meat a month. I soak Vets All Natural - ration of 1 cup VAN (DRY) to each 1Kg of meat - for each cup of VAN dry I add 1 cup water and leave to soak for 24hrs. I mix the VAN with: 40% Minced Beef - I get my butcher to mince this on a course grind 40% Minced Chicken Frames ($1.50Kg at Lenards Chicken) 20% Minced Offal - (Lamb Liver / Brain / Kidney ) All the foods are from My Butcher and are Human grade - not Pet grade. I mix that up - weigh out a daily serve for each dog and put in freezer bags in the freezer. To each days mix I add some - Omega 3 oil blend and some greenpet essentials (available from Greenpet) and I add Pet Pep Up daily. That makes up their dinners and for brekky it is just chicken frames / lamb necks / beef brisket and other bones I don't think it takes a lot of effort to make them up so that they are convenient daily. I mean to buy the premade ones you'll have to spend time going to the shops etc and the price is way more than making it up yourself - my dogs dinner works out at $4 per night for 2 Dobermanns including the supplements. If you have any questions feel free to message me as I have helped many people start feeding BARF and I am happy to help anyone who wants info.

Something like Isocol - contains isopropyl alcohol - same as used in human products like "swimmers ear" which displaces all the water in the canal and then evaporates to leave the ear dry. I am pretty sure it can be used on dogs as it is a fairly inane product and non toxic. Hope that helps

It is worth the trip to see Gary or Neil Barnsley - they are wonderful. It's a nice drive and well worth it! Also there is some fabulous fruit & veg for sale just near them so you can stop & shop and save the money you would've spent in fuel I cannot recommend them enough as they do magic work and everyone I know uses them - hence why they can be very busy!

How about a Dobermann LOL It takes 5 minutes to wash them and no time to dry Sorry to throw that one in the ring - I just cannot imagine doing a 4hr brush! Arrrrgh waaaay too much! I like having drip dry wash'n'wear dogs LOL
