  1. Thats why I'm feeling I have to trial the meds just temporarily - I think he does feel sick and then he feels anxious and the cycle continues, with treats he will eat around the car but not in the car. A straight drive is fine but as soon as turning is involved it gets much worse, unfortunately I drive a small hatch so I can't vary his position in the car which seemed to help when he was younger.
  2. My boy also goes through stages with car sickness... he was good for awhile but now we are back to the drooling (fortunately no vomits). I am curious to hear if anyone has tried the veterinary medication for car sickness? I have also trialed dap spray (no response) and thundershirt (I think it helps slightly).
  3. I don't know about any codes but I do know PetPlan offers 4 weeks free if you sign up at one of the vet clinics...
  4. Yes it helps to feed them with a full meal...drontal seems to be the harshest so do try other brands if it continues even with food.
  5. another option is to call nsw ferret society - ferreters often have rabbit to sell :)
  6. I'd say Frontline is the safest option...once older I would switch to Advantix as I do hear some complaints that Frontline isn't as effective, never had any complaints on Advantix (but care must be taken if you have cats in the household).
  7. I did both... from what I have experienced IV fluids aid a much quicker recovery and my boys fluids did need to be bumped up during the surgery as his blood pressure dropped. Yes it is a short anesthetic but problems can occur. I did pre-anesthetic bloods but only because I wanted a baseline as I planned to start him on medications for his skin and wanted to be sure there were no underlying kidney or liver issues. If he were a healthy dog I would feel confidant opting out of bloods but it really depends on what protocol the clinic uses for their anesthetics.
  8. I don't think the vets will have a trap but its worth a try.... would the council not return the $46 on return of the trap?
  9. When is the chicken version coming out? I couldn't keep condition on my boy with the Black Hawk as well, I've tried a couple of different brands since and I think chicken based diets is what he does best on and would definitely be willing to give it another go.
  10. Have heard of good things through clients at my work -but I've never visited the kennels. Always good to arrange a visit I think and see how you feel about the place.
  11. Mines inside as I can't trust him outside (barks and digs) ... inside he is very well behaved just destroys his own toys. I do worry about what if I get stuck at work or delayed or if there is a fire.
  12. My collie got conjunctivitis a lot... I felt like I was continuously using eye drops! Turns out it was allergy related for him and as he got older the other symptoms were more apparent (itchy/hairloss/swollen nostrils). Since starting treatment for his allergies I haven't had any issues with his eyes.
  13. I can't imagine a vet saying leave a dog with weight loss for a month... did she actually ask them? The food she is feeding is low quality and feeding a whole heap of pet mince is likely to lead her to get pancreatitis as its full of fat. This dog needs good quality protein and a balanced diet that is highly digestible. Sounds like she needs a blood test. This issue has been going on for so long I can't believe the dog hasn't seen a vet yet, how long is she going to wait.. until Misty is dead? Surprised no one has reported her to RSPCA if Misty is as skinny as you describe.
  14. JaCaMa ... I don't think email is the best way to approach many breeders. If you are seriously interested call them. A phone conversation can answer all your questions much more quickly and less work for the breeder than them sitting down typing all that out and it shows them that you are very keen and hopefully start the process of them getting to know you and find out what you are looking for in a pup. If there are not many breeders be prepared to wait some time for a pup.
  15. Yes the paper is sponsered by Pfizer which is pretty normal.. they have vested interests in finding out these things and hence have the money to put into research. Good to see some new data on rates as what I knew before was in published late 90s. I think a lot more people are using preventatives now... I continue to use preventatives...I try and go to the maximum amount of time between dose (ie 60 days for sentinel) ... but for my allergy dog he is on advocate monthly so is protected anyway. I also use preventatives on my ferrets as they are outside and therefore prime targets for mozzies!
  16. Virkon S is another one - it is a powder ... 50g makes 5 litres or something. Trigene or F10 are also good but cleaning kennels it will be a bit costly... Common bleach also works but I far prefer the smell of trigene or F10! If you only accept dogs with vaccinations/titre testing and don't take young pups the risk would be fairly minimal. You may just want to use a regular disinfection to do a thorough clean and a mist of the cages with the parvicide once dry.
  17. Bizarre that you have to use Australian only references, for my tafe course our textbook was from the UK. Did you get a coursework book from your course? A lot of questions that you ask are dealt in detail in the surgery and anaesthetic coursework units. A hint for looking up what equipment is used - veterinary supply websites often list what is included in a spey kit :) I can't answer for your clinic but my clinic would use alfaxan some would use propofol as induction, isoflurane gas to maintain but premed would be variable. Perhaps ACE and morphine or temgesic. Pm me if you like :)
  18. I don't think there are figures on occurrence as hydatid disease isn't notifiable anymore. I think it was 16 cases a year (in victoria) or something like that previously but they believe the figure is lower now as we are much more aware of it. I think human grade food is okay as they check it for cysts... freezing does not kill all the cysts (unless for over a year or something?). As mentioned prevention is your best bet.. just use a tapewormer regularly.
  19. You are within your rights to do that - it only takes 1 minute to write a referral and fax it off. You could also ring a canine dermatologist vet and ask if they prefer to see the dog whilst in rash or in controlled stage - I have no idea why they would want to see the dog whilst not experiencing symptoms? A blood test could give you answers fairly quickly - my dog didn't show up anything in the tests but at least at the specialist we had a plan and worked step by step till we got a diagnosis.
  20. The dermatologist I go to likes to see them when they are itchy - not on meds. I would definitely recommend you seek one now especially with all the problems she has been having - there are definitely tests they can do, for my dog they choose his side which is unaffected by his allergies. They can also do a blood test.
  21. Mine has been on Canidae for a month now - farts are TERRIBLE, I changed from the fish to the land version which seems to be better tolerated. He is still getting 4 cups daily of food which is double what they recommend. Considering changing him off it but not sure what to try... it has increased his weight from the elimination diet which is good.
  22. I know people aren't fans of hills but seriously their prescription diets work and are backed by research - in both cats and dogs it extended their life span, so much so for cats that they didn't finish the trial as it was cruel for the non prescription diet group to not get something that made such a big difference. I've seen it in my friends dog as well. He was on k/d and then u/d and I believe it did really help him. Other options are Royal canin as they also do a renal diet and I believe Eukunuba does too now.
  23. Dog scalers - http://www.im3vet.com/ Look quite different to the wax carvers - I would be concerned if wrong may damage the teeth? You want a good quality stainless steel too.
  24. I would say you would be pretty unlucky for her to get heartworm if it was in VIC for those 10 days as I haven't seen any mozzies around - just too cold! I'm not so up to date with the daily heartwormers but I believe they don't have the lasting protection but only about 3-4 days so probably yes she would technically be at risk. With the monthly ones you have a bit more wiggle room if you forget to give the dose. But if it were me I'd probably just recommence the heartwormers as I think the risk of that short period of time in the current climate would be fairly small.
  25. It might be wise to visit Dr Clarke - he's in Hallam and dentistry is his thing! If you are wanting to save the tooth I imagine he would be the one to see. Placing on IV fluids will also really help with the GA. They are very stoic - we had a cat with TERRIBLE teeth the other day and the owner had refused to believe anything was wrong because he was still eating - we weren't able to save many teeth at all but I can imagine the cat probably felt relieved after it was all over!
