Clicker Training, A Good Idea?
OSoSwift replied to airlock's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have created drive for certain things in a dog that didn't really care for it. It is our job to fine what works for that dog. All dogs like rewards, we have to find the right one. One dog on here was not an easy dog to train due to him not really having something he loved in the toy/food department. His reward was being released to cock his leg. Over time his owner had worked and created drive for other rewards. One of my dogs loves to jump on me, that is a pretty high value reward for him that I can take into the ring, I have fostered that. In every day life my dogs do receive corrections - which is why I say essentially clicker trained - if they go near a snake they get roared at, if they try and chase the cat they get an aversive. However, I try to set them up for success. My 11 week old puppy tried to chase the cat, he got a firm uh uh but he was on a long line so should that not work I could stop him following the cat. He stooped at the correction, came when called and got a huge reward. I never use corrections when training for trialling in obedience, agility etc My aim is to make me my dogs ultimate reward. Oh and before you say it works because they are soft I have also owned Staffords, Rottweilers and Dobermanns and got a few titles along the way. I was a check chain trainer, now I clicker train, why? Because do far it works better. Should a better way come along then I may do that :) -

What about whippets does it only work with them because they are high drive dogs with genetic focus? Yes some dogs are harder than others and some make you work damn hard. It is our job as a trainer to find what motivates our dog and what they find rewarding. -
Online Litter Registrations With Dogs Nsw
OSoSwift replied to Trisven13's topic in Breeders Community
Gee that's quick, mine were received in WA on the 5th Sept and have been processed but not checked as yet apparently! I should get them back by the end of next week?? I hope so. Sounds like online isn't worth the hassle! -
I have recently chipped my litter. They ahve been registered to my name and will be changed over by the owners - I have all the paperwork to do so. That way if for any reason the new owners don't change it or don't get around to it the puppy is in my name so I will be contacted.

The cloud collars are blown up so you can leave it a bit softer but Rommi had no issues laying down in hers, and they are long and skinny. They do come in quite small sizes.
-
Come is my formal recall, here is I want you to come back to me but not sit straight I front etc. they can run up and around me. This way means head towards the direction I am going but they can a be a reasonable distance away

I recently used a King Cloud collar. It was well tolerated, much smaller and more comfortable that a traditional collar. Not sure how it would go if it was a wound on a foot or something though? Normally Rommi doesn't lick her sores but the wound at the front of her shoulder she would not leave along. The collar worked wonderfully

In my house I am the boss and ruler of all things good. This means food, attention, the lounge etc etc. I have two food bowls, whoever's bum hits the floor first gets fed first. If one dog growls at the other getting on the lounge the one who growls gets unceramoniously dumped on the floor and sent to sleep on the dogs bed. Privlidges are earnt not a given regardless of where they think they are on any pecking order. I find things change as dependant on the resource they are wanting. Food, the bitch is the one who will call the shots given half a chance, toys my dog says yay or nay. At the end of the day I say who gets what and when and anyone who causes an issue gets pulled up quick smart. They usually get put at the end of the line and lose all privlidges for at least a few days or/and until they lose the ego. We rarely have issues these days and they are minor if we do.

I use martingales/ limited slip as I have Whippets and they can slip out of flat collars too easily. My older dogs train in no collars, young ones on martingales/limited slip collars

Some dogs tolerate roo really well (my Whippets) some do not tolerate it at all and it goes through them like a dose of salts (my now deceased Dobe) You can use other raw meats so choose what your dog does best on. I use roo as I can get it from a local person and know it is eating grass one night and in my freezer the next day. There are no preservatives and my dogs and cats tolerate it really well. Roo is very lean which is why I think my dogs do okay on it as tone on particular does not tolerate fat well and cannot eat Chicken, Turkey or emu -
What Do You Do With Your Dogs When You Go Out?
OSoSwift replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
If they have full control of their classes, good training methods and can read body lnaguage then why should those issues be a porblme at all. I have currently 4 entire animals at home, three of these are males, the female is being desexed shortly. One is a baby, the two older whippets have trained and trialed with success from limited outings, have never been in a fight with anything other than a rumble with each other, and are some of the better trained dogs that go to my club. My dogs are extremely well socilaised - well my definition of it, I don't want my dog to play with all the other dogs we come accross I want them to ignore thema nd have no worth for them - They can go anywhere with heaps of people and dogs and not have an issue. If anything your dog will grow taller from early desexing not smaller. He won't fill out as well but will be leggier. -

Sorry just to clarify, The training school was telling you when you had to desex or you couldn't continue going??? That is the most insane piece of crap I have ever heard. Do they believe entire dogs are untrainable or do they just not have the skills to potentially deal with a dog who may be feeling its hormones. Run, don't walk away from these bunch of morons!!!! -

Clicker Training, A Good Idea?
OSoSwift replied to airlock's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My dogs are essentially clicker trained. They are very well trained and extremely reliable. They are Whippets and I have called them off live prey. I live on a farm with stock fencing and they are off lead in the 5 acres around the house. They are well trained as far as obedience goes and well trained for day to day life as well -

Pseudomonas Infection Now Antibiotic Resistant
OSoSwift replied to jessg's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Jess I have seena dog who had to have holes drilled into his sinus and had liquid- cannot remember for the life of me what it was called - flushed thorugh his sinuses once a week for a few treatments. They had tried all sorts of drugs and had resistance issues. The flushing - also they plugged up his nostrils and filled the area with the solution and let it sit in there before flushing it through - worked and he had another 4 or so years before passing away from something totally unrelated. You cannot bring Honey products into WA however Jarrah Honey, raw, from down the southwest has medicinal properties similar to manuka honey. -
I Don't Understand! Stopping Dogs From Barking
OSoSwift replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
I can tune out to other peoples dogs, but if my own bark it really annoys the crap out of me! I have one that will whine when I am training the other - he doesn't now- and at one stage I gave the people sitting near us a squirty bottle! Others peoples dogs bark and it barely registers! I cannot understand how people can let their dogs bark for hours, how can they not hear it or it not wear thin after 8 hours straight! -
If looks could kill!!!! Love the photos :)

That is frustrating. Is it possible you could take her to Fair trading???

If you have an issue tell Troy, however this has been going for sometime so I am sure if Troy had an issue it would have been dealt with already. -
