My understanding was that there wouldn't be other neurological issues like irrational fear of the trees/shadows etc as you have described - I am happy to be corrected - but I have seen that with CL and that starts showing signs around the 12 to 18 month mark.

HAs he been tested for CL as well?

Entire Dogs Always Told Off For Mounting
OSoSwift replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
YEs it can happen. I know a dog who would not go near the very receptive bitch when his owner was anywhere near him. Remove the owner job done. My boys are never told off for mounting humping behaviour towards a bitch coming into season or in season. If they hump something else (like the pet lamb!!) they are pushed off and distracted but not chastised. HUmping when no bitches are in season is reprimanded but I don't think Lewis has every actually done that. -
I know the dog is not aggressive, my own dogs play with me like this, but if they nip me, accident or not, I am not likely to bleed out and die, where a baby might. The dog does not need to mean any harm, but guess who gets the blame when something happens.... Not to mention the breed will once again receive a blow against the carefully restored image. I would not let a small dog play with a baby that way either.... Which is why I said I would not allow or condone it either and you are right, I wouldn't let any dog play with my child like that. Dobes tend to do less when they mean more if that makes sense, they don't jump around and play when they mean business. They may bite or mouth in play which of course has the ability to have just as deadly consequences.

Ever Wonder How Much Your Dogs Watch What You Do ?
OSoSwift replied to Marion 01's topic in General Dog Discussion
Lewis would probably pee on the witches hats................ -
Having owned a Dobe that is fairly normal play, not aggressive at all. I played with mine and they did just that, they also held steady eye contact and "stalked", none of it was aggressive it was play. Having said that it is a totally inappropriate way for a large dog to interact with a baby, and not one I would allow or condone..

Told She Was Desexed.. Find Out She Isn't. Accidental Mating
OSoSwift replied to Wilfred's topic in General Dog Discussion
When I was at the vets we had a couple come in to be desexed that had been obtained from the pound (no rescue here)and were found to be desexed when opened up. -
The other thing is each person wants pick puppy. Which is usally chosen by sex then colour. They don't want the pup that is the best match for them and their situation. I recently spoke to one person who was extremely miffed that he had to go on a waiting list adn then they got to decide if he was good enougha dn they got to choose which puppy. He didn't like that at all. So he got one of scumtree as he could pick the one he wanted and no-one questioned if he would be good enough or if the pup was the right one. The breed he has I will be suprised if it has any health testing so I hope the kids hearts are not broken in the next 6 years or so. I put some photos up on my website of my current litter - all sold. The amount of enquiries I got for a particular puppy becasue of her colour was astounding. I explained they were all sold and the puppies were chosen in regard to temperment as matching the home they were going to. Some people did not like that at all! Those who did get my babies were all very happy with the fact I was going to match a puppy to their families, others just want what they want with no regard to anything than that looks good I'll take it thanks!

Told She Was Desexed.. Find Out She Isn't. Accidental Mating
OSoSwift replied to Wilfred's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes exactly! If she doesn't she may still be or not. If she is tattoo'd she is. If I had been told a bitch was desexed I would have no issues running her with an entire male and I could be in potentially the same situation so I don't think casting aspertions in regard to that is helpful. Not everyone has had entire bitches or would have a clue what to look for. I normally ask for no tattoo as I find that causes them quite a bit of discomfort. I forgot with Rommi and she has one which concerned me as her ears are quite thin but it healed up just fine. One hairless cat ahs one, one doesn't and I would prefer not as it is bleeding obvious in the one who has it, white ear, no hair, big green tattoo. -

I would determine if she is infact entire or not before getting to het up about everything. If she is infact entire then yes desex her ASAP, if not then no drama. I would not be putting a dog under a GA just incase. As previously asked did they tie, or where they just humping, not unusual for an entire male and a new dog or bitch. Have you looked inside her ear for a desexing tattoo? it is a dotted line circle with a strike through it. And breathe!! If it only just happened it does not need to be sorted today. First steps first. -

If you get them soon enough a tortion doesn't have to be fatal. My dog survived a tortion where a stomach tube could not be passed. -

There is a lady with a diabetic alert Whippet called Winston. There is an organisation that trains diabetic alert dogs I will see if I can find some more information for you.

We discussed this last night, My OH said well Goose is mine, my answer- of course he is I don't want him!!! The Whippets are yours, yep now the cats could be tricky. We both said we couldn't split them up and in all likelyhood they would probably go to me.

Nz Huntaway Is Officially A Recognized Breed!

I have recently had two HW X Kelpies in my kennels, very smart and very lively lovely little dogs :) We not really little :) -
Absolutely. Convenient as in less possibility of trips to the vet for mammary lumps and no risk of pyometra. I'm sold. Hell, if they'd desex me I'd be all over that as well. Desexing early as someone has already pointed out prevents accidental matings. Nothing affects a bitches development quite like having pups while she still is one. Sorry but rubbish. I have had bitches desexed younger and older I do not have to take them to the vets checking for mammry lumps any more than I need them to go for checking of any other sorts of lumps. Pyo is a risk yes but extremely rare after the first season. It is a surgery of convienience if done before 12 to 18 months of age. I am not necessarily saying that is a bad thing but it is what it is. I have recently had my nearly 6 you bitch done. she has had her litter, she had some issues so I didn't want her to have more and yes Pyo in a bitch her age is a higher risk. I also cannot understand why altered growth of a dog/bitch is not an issue if it is a pet? I would want my pet looking as it should and as it parents and siblings look. It's not just about growing up to look as it should, but to be fit for function. Longer limbs, straight stifles, an increased rate of HD in desexed males and of course spey incontinence in bitches. I certainly believe in the speying of bitches when they have fully matured. I don't buy into mentality that every bitch owner is an irresponsible one or cannot manage one season ( if they choose to) without an accidental mating. Oh I agree fully, A pet dog has every right to look as it should and be as fit as it should be. I am yet to have mammary tumours in any of my bitches, three different breeds. Desexed from 7 months to 6.5 years of age. I have had a pyo in one bitch.

My friend has a kelpie like that, completely feral even after all day working, works like a champ though. They own a kelpie stud and all the pups turned out like him and lots of big stations bought them because of their intensity and drive  Yep brilliant sheep dog, especially considering he is only just one, but a total arse to live with - he is improving :) He is called Goose for a reason! -

Great news. Our working BC would be a total pain in the backside as a pet, even if he was given lots of exercise. This is a dog that runs around the farm behind the bike in prefrence to on it, still destroys stuff and even after a day working sheep comes homes and hoons around. Even in a sporting home he would require a lot of dedication and someone who could train/exercise him many hours per day. -

The Whippets are mine, the BC his....the Sphynx however could get messy. I wanted them, I got them, I paid for them, I do all their care, but we both love them equally and they us. Whatever would happen they would stay together. It would probably eb me though as my OH wouldn't do the amount of care they needed. The Whippets are all in my name, the reciept for the BC is in his.

What she said :) Just ahd mine done, it wasn't straight forward and a breed that can have issues with some anaesthetics. She came through really well and is hooning around like nothing happened three weeks out :)

Do You Keep A Bloat Kit On Hand For Emergency S
OSoSwift replied to chook007's topic in General Dog Discussion
ME three, My bloat kit is dog, car, vets, bolt flat out. I have had a few experiences with it and my dog thankfully survived each time. -
Seeing my three Whippets at my kennels, then a Greyhound who was visiting........oh is that the mum of those dogs?????? Um no they are different breeds, these two (Whippets) are adults. Oh well they look the same to me! Interestingly I had told them only 10 minutes prior that the 15 week old was the baby of the two adults...................
