Wow! That is a whole lot more cash to find. And that excess is quite high

To be honest I am the one most likely to go nope, don't wait , they are insured, do whatever is the best option. My vets don't ask if you have insurance, they give you all options the best and most expensive, the least and middle of the road.

Yep, junior handles will jump at the chance. There are always people willing to help out. I am often lucky enough - when I do get to shows - to be allowed to play with Dobes and GSP's and sometimes Staffords as well :) I am no professional handler but I give it my best :)

Over the years I have had to have a number of dogs and cats puts down. One was my husbands cat and I think it was left too long. He was comatose by the time he was taken to the vet. It should have been done a good day and a half before. Having worked in the veterinary industry I would never allow my pets to go too long. I would prefer they go early than suffer. I had my hors eput down. She had cancer, we had removed it, it came back and went internally as far as the vet could feel. She was very stoic and quiet, a rescue and had been badly treated. She looke d amillion dollars when she was put down a week later as I knew I wouldn't know how much pain she was in until she suddenly couldn't get up, got colic whatever. I did not want her to get to that point. It half killed me the day I did it, but I am glad I did as she looked fantastic, could walk herself to where she needed ot be, was surrounded by people she loved and went quietly. Majestic to the end.

Bahahahaha love it

If he couldn't fence the entire property adequately then he should have adequately fenced a smaller area. He has had them since they were young, what are their ages now??? Maybe now they are old enough and mature enough to finally go that extra step.

I have 2000 acres. I can contain my dogs. I have also contained Dobes, Staffords and Rottweilers. It can be done. I feel so deeply for this poor young man, terrifying would not begin to describe what he has been through. Good on the neighbour, had he gone in on foot they both could have been dead or severely injured. He was thinking.

Dogue De Bordeaux / English Mastiff Puppy. New Pic's Of Kirby
OSoSwift replied to BC Crazy's topic in Puppy Chat
Have you heard of many BYB's that hip and elbow score their animals? Then let the dogs go at 6 weeks. I do know of one actually, But back then that was my point, just broaching it in a nicer way! -
In that case to me you have done everything you can and would not be responsible in any way.

Yep I knew about Bloat, did everything that was current at the time to try to reduce it and had a bitch bloat three times - yes she had a gastroplexy. She survived because I recognised signs very early, was a vet nurse at my vets and when I called he flew down there and had her on the table as quickly as was humanly possible. Please be very careful with Bloat. So many die from it even with people who do know what to look for. -
MIne sleep in crates by choice, they travel in a large crate in the back of my car. I have had dogs have major surgeries requiring crate rest. The fact they are very calm when in there and rehabbing has meant that recovery is much much easier. My dogs can be smack bang in the middle of things but not get knocked, hurt or jump on the lounge etc when they shouldn't. Of course crating for long hours is irresponsible. And like anything used wisely it is fantastic. Pretty simple really.
-
The attack was sustained, not one snap or bite. I do think the owners irresponsible for keeping the dogs behind such a low fence and not having the gate locked. Yes the child shouldn't have enetered the yard, especially since there was a sign on there, however I do believe it law that your front door must be able to be accessed??? I may be wrong though. A child should not pay this price for going through the gate into a front yard. Had the owner not beaten the dogs off - which took time - he may well have paid with his life. If I had dogs capable of doing this they would be in the yard with the gate locked. Dogs can defend and do every day without sustained attacks. If they were mine I would be driving them for euthanasia myself.
-
Would the dogs HAVE to be put down if the owner didn't want to surrender? They were in their own yard with signage and the gates were shut.

Heads Up More Breed Specific Legislation On The Table
OSoSwift replied to Steve's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agreed. There is also a Pug and a Frenchie with ET titles - that I know of there may be more. -
YOu can get VAN from PetStock and Better pets and gardens in Perth

Quite a few hounds are easy enough to train for the ring. Tick the 'what's in it for me box' and most happily play the game. :) The key to success often lies in their stomachs. :) I find my Whippets wwaaayyyy easier to train than my Dobes or Staffords ever where. I don't understand when people talk about hard to train Whippets.

For Those That Have Used The Suprelorin Implant
OSoSwift replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
From the top of my head my boy was around 22 months post implant When he got a semen test and they said he had low fertility. Around 7 to 8 months later he mated my bitch who had 5 puppies. Unless he gets unwell or a medical condition caused by stress hormones etc from her being in season it is only 3 to 4 weeks, my boy used to go off his food a bit and whinge a bit but other than that he wasn't to bad. He was worse when he was actually mating her, shredded soft crate anyone :) -

Did the behaviour settle over time? Behaving like an entire dog is expected, but he's much more full on that prior to the implant. Or maybe I have just forgotten He wasn't really bad and I prefer him entire - behaviour and temperamant wise - so it didn't settle but nothing he did was inappropriate just an increase in marking and tasting urine etc. When I was looking for info adn started this thread, nowhere on any page - and trust me I read for hourse and days and weeks, did I find that information. I did find some information similar on an official document submitted by the company when looking to register the product in Europe. I am thinking they did not do enough study on this product prior to releasing the product and the guidlines. The vet I went to pushed me towards the 12 month implant as I didn't want to breed for 12 months at least and she said the 6 month one would wear off to soon and we would be back at the beginning with his particular issue. At no stage was I told any of that and had I known I would definately gone the 6 month implant. ETA the 2 to 2.5 years for the 12 month implant is what seems to be showing up in this thread. -

Put her food in a 12 muffin, muffin tin or get her a no gulp food bowl. I know Dogues have a reduced life Span compared to many but 8 is still very reduced, plus they are crossed. Harnesses are good but as for walking, nope they aren't. Dogs and horses pull very heavy loads with a harness that they couldn't from a collar. All you do is give them something to pull against from the most powerful thing to pull with. Started early - as you are, there is no reason why she cannot walk properly on a collar. Training to heel and walk on a lead can happen from 6 weeks easily, they don't have to be out and about to do it and infact you don't want them to be. You want them to train initially in a low distraction evironment. -
My Whippets have running for fun, running kinda fast, running fast, then okay lets gets serious. Our BC is very fit, very lean and very fast for a BC, he will try hard and cut corners and still not quite catch them, however they will run for a while and have quite good distance fitness for Whippets, however they have nothing on him. He worked sheep for the most part of the day, then came home and went yaay you are playing ball, pickme, pickemeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee They could never keep up with that!

She is very cute. There are some points that are valid though. Were the parents hip and elbow scored? If not the chances of her suffering from this is higher than a pup from parents with low scores. This will not show up unto she is older. I know this from experience. I sincerely hope she does not end up with any health issues as it is totally heart breaking. I would not consider death at age 8 just from "old age". -

No harness. Harnesses are good as seat belts and for dogs with neck injuries. There is no reason why she cannot be taught to walk on a normal lead/collar.
