HOw awful and distressing. Dog trailers do not seem to fair well at all in accidents RIP Person and RIP Dogs that have gone over the bridge.

Having had a dog have it adn survive - 3 times, yes she had had a gastroplexy, but still bloated on two more occassions due to gutsing inappropriate stuff - it is an horrendous thing to go through. Thank goodness he is okay and you guys were on to it. It is truely terrifying to see them expand before your eyes. Your story sounds exaclty like our first time. Except it was 5am and she had eaten etc as normal at 8 pm the night before and been crated for a time etc so we have no idea why either.

He does have an off switch sometimes. He is a working border Collie who can and does work all day. He keeps himself occupied by chasing leaves, wind, raindrops, planes and the moon. Now he is a bit older he will lay down for a bit but flex one muscle and he moves. He is far more active than any show line Border Collie I have come across. He chooses to stay outside as when he is inside he is expected to lay still, which he will do but he prefers not to. He can work sheep run to the house from the yards and goo woohoo your playing ball, pick me pick me. He will happily settle tethered or crated or inside but prefers to keep moving.

My BC is a total pain in the arse as a pet. But then again aren't they supposed to be a dog who can or would work all day? If they don't have drive, enthusiasm and a want to be on the go then they are kinda not really what they are supposed to be are they! If they are not willing to put in the effort to find the right dog, I suspect they are not willing to put in the effort a BC requires.

It was such a nice change to have people saying wow look at the gorgeous Whippets etc rather than look at the skinny dogs. One poor lady was so embarressed after her child very loudly said mum lood at those skinny dogs at the top of her lungs at the markets. Mother through clenched teeth said - they are supposed to look like that they are Whippets! When child said - but mum they ARE skinny, mum cut in with - shut up. Poor lady. Kids say it as they see it and I wasn't upset.

She needs to see more breeders

Geez, that is concerning in more ways than one. They are encouraging that behaviour and the dog passed out????????? Not funny, not good, not normal.

Just yesterday I was walking my three through town while my car was getting new tyres and a guy stopped his car and got out to ask me if they were miniature greyhounds. I said no they are whippets. We then had a lovely chat about his rather enormous gorgeous black and white GAP grey he had in the back of his wagon. I also gained a new client for the kennels :) I was stopped by someone else who remarked on my exceedingly good looking Whippets, of course I agreed :)

They are pretty tough, from memory tigers use them :) MAybe google how tough are Home alone toys you may find some randome things that way :)

I have only just caught up on this - not sure how I missed it. Great to hear his second surgery is done and dusted. It won't be long until he can run and jump pain free how exciting :)
-
If he likes pulling on ropes etc a "Home Alone" toy from Aussie dog products would work well. I believe if you give a dog heaps of physical exercise it doesn't tire them out mentally and you just make them fitter to do "naughty" things longer. Mental stimulation is the key :)

I use weldmesh at the kennels and for corner misshaps I tent peg down Bunnings compost panels, works a treat :)

Her surgery occured years after taking out insurnace. If she had had a knee problem prior to insurance being taken out - it would be in her vets notes - then she wouldn't be covered. You have to supply a copy of vet notes when you apply for cover. She had had conjunctavitis and kennel cough before taking out insurance so wasn't cover for those for 12 months. After that I asked for a review and those conditions were removed. The conjunctavitis was from beach sand getting in her eyes, the kennel cough from a moron bringing a puppy to PPS that was coughing. I shall ask again and then get it in writing shortly.

My motto in life is you don't feed peoples dogs or kids without asking first. I have had dogs with sever food allergies adn I don't want my dogs sick and in pain becasue someone doesn't think. Plus I am cynical and don't trust anyone. I instruct at our local dog cluba nd have a bog bag full of treats, I always make sure I ask if the dog can have what I have in my bag and they must always sit before I give it to them.
-
I have roared at people before for feeding my dog. This - among other things - is why I don't do dog parks, I would get far too pissed off.
-
I would do some more mind stimulation training, puzzle games etc, but other than that the area is fine.

Petplan told me if my dog required surgery for her other cruciate it was covered, I asked specifically.

Looking For Breeder Of Adopted Rescue Dog
OSoSwift replied to Snippy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Brilliant, so pleasing for you and his breeder -
Yes they could be trained to track dogs. However when you train them to track humans that is what you train them to track. They are trained to ignore other scents and smells from animals etc. Just because a dog can track does not mean it will generalise and track whatever you put them on, they need to be trained to track that scent. They can track older scent but obviously the fresher the better. Also some dogs track others are sent out to cast and search to find a scent rather than track from the known beginning of a scent track.

Agree with Wreck it. Bitches are bitches and they don't let it go!
-
Bloody idiot. He is lucky no dog was badly injured. Anyone feeds mine a treat without asking would lose their head!

I figure if you get insurance, Murphy's Law will see you don't need to use it. Don't get it and Murphy's Law will tell you you should have!

Dogs, Harnesses , And Hypotheticals
OSoSwift replied to persephone's topic in General Dog Discussion
I use harnesses for travelling in cars, getting my dogs to pull and for my old Dobermann who had Wobblers and a very sore neck. If a dog is trained correctly they won't pull or hit a lead so it shoudl not matter if they are in a collar, a harness or anthing else. I don't use harnesses as I have seen many rubbing issues and I don't like using something that may impeed my dogs movement. My dogs don't wear collars unless out and about/at the beach. No way I would use a harnesss at the beach. So it is rare my dogs are walked on lead. If tracking etc I would use harness. -
There is a general guide line as in ml's per kg. if you ring your vet they will let you know :)
