Okay brief run down. 6th Oct - Rommi punctured something straight into the bottom of her pad on a toe on her front leg. Flushed Ab,s. Abcessed, wound opened up flushed drained, pus and gunk came out. Appeared to heal up, lamness nearly gone. Then foreign body lump noticed in webbing between toes, not lame at this stage. Foreign body removed and looked like a wood like item, very small. Appeared sound. Started going lame, within two days(whilst being watched for abcessing) a very small hole appeared in the exact sopt of original injury. A large piece of sand came out, serous discharge, poulticed abs again. Now I have a dog that was not lame for one day, now back to limping if she steps on a gravel stone, or a very lumpy uneven surface, sound on grass and inside. There is some residual swelling of said toe, no red spots or pin point areas. I have asked about xrays (worried about joint damaged/infection). Vet said unlikely as she is showing no signs of infection. Also if any foreign bodies are remaining and they are sand or wood like they will not show up on xray. She is reluctant (as am I) to open up her toe with no specific area to target. So I have a dog that is not better, but no worse for a period of weeks. It has been around 8 weeks since the beginning. I am lost for what to do next. Vet thinks leave it and see what happens, but at the moment not much! I am edging towards an xray and if it shows up nothing so be it, but it may. If I do and it doesn't what next????? I have been told worse case senario we amputate her toe. I will do whatever it takes to fix it well before that is an option. It is a middle toe. I feel totally helpless, she is not her normal self and I have a dog who wants to go for walks etc, but when we walk(all our farm tracks are gravel and too unsafe -snakes- to walk in the grassy areas) I have a dog that limps, not constantly, but enough I don't want to walk her and cause her pain. SHe is eating, playing normally. She will race around with the other Whippet and not think about it. Any idea about a plan of attack?? I feel totally over it all and just want to do something!

Hmm I have decided to get another dog after reading all the wonderful things you are doing. I don't have the room of the money to look after it, but can scrape together the purchase price - won't everyone be so impressed at the price I have paid for my pure bread pup! A piece of carpet on the ground under a tree will be enough won't it? I want a tough dog, non of those namby pamby things that people have inside, it needs to be bread and lived in tough conditions so I know that it will be fine outside under the tree. I am with you on those snobby show breeders, all they do is breed dogs that are soft and woosy - all that living inside and dog beds, and god forbid some even put coats on them - Rubbish if you ask me. I would like a Stafmasrottbull please and only Blue will do of course. I do not want any trouble from it, I want it to try and eat anyone that gets in the back yard and I won't ever take it for walks or train it because that is for sooks. Oh and they do okay on being feed the floor scrapings from elcheapo dog food company every 3 day or so don't they? I want a big tough dog, but I don't want to have to pay much to feed it.

Vaccine Reaction Or Something Else

It was mentioned in the other thread about his elbow lump and I think is called a hygroma? or something similar. I think the panic started when the vet believed he had elbow dysplacia and hip dysplasia - even though the puppy only had a hands on exam. I believe the lump is only on the one elbow as well. -
You forgot self clipping and grooming - I am sure PF will have no problems with your order

Glad he is feeling better and you are feeling better. Hope all goes well. -
Sometimes if a dog has had a blow to the eye, they are put on atropt (atropine) drops to dilate the pupil. It helps to reduce pain and inflammation. I had a horse with a sore eye that had her pupil dilated for over a week to help make sure the pupil didn't adhere to the front of the eye while it was healing. Even if you suddenly stop the atropt it can take a day for the pupil to come down to near normal size. It is common to put dilate an animals pupil for at least a couple of days after an eye injury or suspected injury. Atropt takes awful - take it from someone who accidentally got some in her eye whilst medicating said horse - and had a dilated pupil for a good day! Even though it goes in the eye, the eye drains into the back of the throat. There is someone on here who is a veterinary opthathalmis assistant and said they are happy to discuss eyes Elfin from a different thread ETA I see she/he has already replied

I take both of my kids to the hairdressers when I get my hair cut. They have a small basket of toys, the kids are told to sit on the floor near me and play. they are not allowed to roam around, there are lots of potential disasters in a hairdresser. My children are reminded EVERY SINGLE TIME they see a dog - do not pat the dog, you only pat if ask and the owner says yes, even then I do not encourage patting of unknown dogs, and I never ask them if they want to pat a dog that we do not know. What is wrong with telling a child no and then acting on it if they don't listen? The child should have been better supervised, the dog souldn't have been loose in a shop, especially considering there was a toddler who was roaming freely. Now there is a bitten child and a dead dog again!!!!!! Sometimes the stupidness of the human race astounds me.

Vaccine Reaction Or Something Else

Any news on Oberon as yet? Hope all is well :p -
I have taken my puppies out since day the first day of getting them home. They have been carried, taken out for drives and had low risk people pat them. My Whippet even went to an opening night dogs were invited to at our local arts centre. All the pieces were dog related. She was carried and had a great time, lots of exposure to people and places is the key. Be as safe as you can, but undersocialisation is one of the biggest cause of behavioural issues in adolecent and young dogs

Chicken Neck Technical Advice Lol
OSoSwift replied to SeeGee's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use chicken frames and turkey necks, lamb flaps and beef bones with my lot. I also worry that chicken necks are a bit small for them - the Stafford inhales his food! I have never had a problem from feeding those raw bones, just avoid chop bones even raw they are very very sharp. I use the odd rawhide for a treat, never touched a greenie - I do know that they MUST chew them if they swallow large chunks at all they can cause intestinal blockages. If he is having a good chew - then perfect, he will have shiney teeth and be happy as larry. I have seen plenty of problems from cooked bones, only a rare few from raw bones. -

Vaccine Reaction Or Something Else
OSoSwift replied to pixie_meg's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I hope he is feeling better. redness even generalised can be a sign of a vaccine reaction. He may have even been bitten by a spider if under the house. With the elbows and hips, Take a deep breath. I would ring your breeder and maybe get their help to put you in the direction of a vet used to dealing with large sighthounds. I believe you made another post about a large fluid filled lump on his elbow. Is he lame? reluctant to exercise? Elbow dysplasia is very painful and the "lump" is hard with some swelling, generally, not fluid filled and non-painful. I know you will be very upset but please address it one step at a time and try not o get too carried away with the what if just yet. Thinking of you all ETA just did some googling and not one site mentioned ED as a potential problem. HD was mentioned but not that it was a major problem, just a problem as it can be in any large fast growing dog. -
Hi Dyz, Just letting you know our Polar collars arrived today :D
