Just Came Home From The Dog Kennel Disappointed
OSoSwift replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks It's really more about the weird posts on here and messages that I want answers for now more than anything else. He's been there, it's done, but the stuff thats happened since just feels a bit off to me.. And I can fully understand that - not knowing of course what anu PM's have said. In the same situation I am quite sure it would sit a little uneasy with me. Have you contacted the kennel as yet? -

I went on a holiday that was a 1500 km drive each way. I drove my Dobe to a breed knowleadgable breeding kennel that was great. I had to drive 750kms to get to it and it did take us around 300 out of our way but was worth it for peace of mind. I hope you get it sorted PTD -
My puppies have always been chosen by the breeder and apart from one all have been exactly what I was after. My last show bitch I got I was a little more specific, but when I was after a whippet the only two things I wanted was a laid back puppy and ideally a girl - more because I have always had girls. If I had the choice of many I would have picked a solid as I have had dogs in the past where sunburn at the beach was an issue so I wanted good pigment. Now I have Lewis I would be happy for either sex and the personality I wanted, and colour has never been a big thing for me. I did have a soft spot for Blue Brindle Parti colours (which I now have) But my first was a solid Fawn brindle with very minimal white. Rommi was the last puppy left, but she was perfect for our situtation so she came to live with us. Cath told us if she was like one of the other puppies in the litter she would have told me that she wouldn't have been suitable.

SOunds like a very compassionate vet and hospital We had a couple of lovely people who did things like that. Homemade scones Jam and cream - Yum. A yummy chocolate cake, but some of the best were bags of fresh apricots, plums and otehr fruits. I agree with a fruit, cheese and kabana type platter. Something for everyone. A very lovely memory for me was being presented with two beautiful handmade Matinee jackets for my baby as I was pregnant and leaving a few weeks later. I still have them and both my kids wore them.

Our Stafford is very allergic to them, they drive him nuts and he will scratch and chew his skin off very quickly. I found Repel-x works well, bit stinky though.

Definately no corn cobs! They get stuck like a cork in a wine bottle. I think you can feed them to some types of birds? Not sure about that though.

Bow Wow Has Been Diagnosed With A Heart Murmur
OSoSwift replied to Bow Wow's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My Stafford has been on heart medication for almost two and a half years. He is going okay, had a rough trot the last few weeks but he also has spinal issues. He was 12 in June. -

The vets I worked for who are my vets now I have left are fantastic! There are alsways some who are not, I suggest to go and look for a good one. I know that the vets I worked for although they had very good dog knowledge, did know what particular conditions a dog was predisposed to have due to it's breed or cross. They were happy to learn and I was often asked about breed specific things. There are new things that crop up and unless a vet has seen or heard of it they have no other way of knowing about a disease. I once relayed info on CL in border Collies after having read up in depth about it the previous week. It ended up the border collie they were assessing did have CL but that had never seen it or treated it. I suppose the best way to get the info out there would be to have articles in say "The Veterinarian" as a lot of vets do read those. Where we are is is a logistical feat to get to lots of the confrences etc as we are a long way from anywhere, but our vets do go and are encourage to attend things that relate to their interests. I am quite unsure why that particular vet would think it okay to breed from that particular bitch though???? Defies logic! But there will always people that do that regardless. Does say the AVA see that the legislation is sent to the reg'd vets? They cannot know if they never recieve the info? I'd like to think that we educate rather than slam a group of people, after all these are the people that buyers of puppies will be going to for health concerns vaccinations etc. I educated my vets when I was working there and gained much more in return.

Whippets, 5 acre house yard, but they are inside when we are and only out when we are. 2000 acres all up with too many 'friendly' snakes!

Aww poor little Snot. If it helps to ease your stress a little I know of a Beagle that had almost exactly the same problem as your boy. She had surgery and 6 months down the track - or earlier, you would not know that she had had a problem. She ran played etc as per normal. Do you have any ideas what he may have done? Hugs to you and Snot.

Long Working Hours - Can You Still Have A Dog?
OSoSwift replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would be thinking a young adult would probably be the best way to go. I had Rommi from a baby puppy and I was at home so could spend all the time she needed and it was great. I got Lewis at 8 months, ad though still very young, he was already housetrained, lead trained had lovely manners and was very easy to integrate compared to looking after a baby. My next dog would probably be a puppy, but I am quite sure that having a baby puuppy, a 4 year old and a 2 year old would have been much more stressful than a 8 month old puppy with the above. Yes it can be done, but they will need to spend quite a bit of time when they are home walking/training/interacting with their dog. -
I don't think his wiggle bum helps, but he is pacing which accentuates how he his walking. He appears to toe in and be bandy legged, which would be ccentuated and make him waddle. My Rotti did this and whilst her hips were fine (she did have OCD of her elbows) she waddled because of he poor hidleg conformation. I wuld be going down te path of a thorough check up, then a chiro/bowen visit and go from there. Hopefully he is just a happy boofer with bandy egs and a wiggle bum!

I have never seen Rommi happier than playing with Lewis. My Whippets definately prefer Whippets. My Dobe bitch liked boy Dobes, but saw other bitches as competition!

If One More Person Asks Me...... Grrrr
OSoSwift replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well Yogi my Whippets recognised you instantly as one of their own ilk! You are very handsome by the way -
Thank you for posting that story. It is an elightening story about just how disgusting some in the human race are. Probably wasn't even their dog, even if it was they shouldn't be allowed to own one. I feel for the poor rescue people who put in so much time and effort, and of course all the dogs that will now never have a second chance because of those imbisiles. I feel like writing them a letter!

I use Plush Puppy Whitening Shampoo and Plush Puppy other shampoo, but can't remember the exact name.

Usually it is normal lubrication. I haveonly ever seen one entire Minin poodle who did have an infection, but his penis looked irritated as did the mucosa inside his sheath. Antibiotics and he was fine. Lewis has a small amount of discahrge, but is completely normal. He is entire and 10 months old.

Please Make Sure Your Dogs Are Okay In The Heat
OSoSwift replied to InspectorRex's topic in General Dog Discussion
We had 47 a couple of days ago. I was supposed to go out, but cancelled. No way I was going out and putting the two Whippets and an aged Stafford with a heart problem out in that heat! They spent the day laying on the tiles under the aircon with the odd toilet stop - they just gave me wilting looks! Thank goodness we have had a few cooler days. -
Just Came Home From The Dog Kennel Disappointed

I know in WA at least there are some kennels that advertise that they board coated breeds and will do whatever grooming required. Maybe you have something like that available? Customer service goes a long way! -

OSoSwift replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
In our boarding kennels which I have used once we are charged for a full day on the drop off and pick up day. So 7 days would be what I would be charged for. I would imagine grooming would be an extra cost. Our kennel give a hydrobath before leaving. Some dogs run around more and don't eat as much when they are boarding, however a bit more of a personalised interaction would have been nice. I would send them a letter stating your concerns and give them the ability to lift there game. I use a house sitter.
