My bitch is a very close breeding and I have had no problems what so ever. Had a bitch that was no where near as close and died from hereditary disease. I don't think a close breeding is a major issue as long as the parents are health tested and good, sound of mind and body specimens.

Don't listen - Abbey is gorgeous. Stupid womans loss. I do remember walking our Stafford and Dobe one day with my frend and her two dogs. A lady approached me and asked if she could pat my Dobe, I said yes. Our STafford was so happy someone was going towards, just about wiggling himseld inside out at the though of a pat - but not jumping or pushing at all. They both moved very slightly towards her. Her reply. Oh not tyou you ugly dog, Hate those dogs they are vicious untrustworthy things. My reply, well out of the two he is the one I would trust first and she is the one that guards, he doesn't at all. Our Stafford is the friendliest dog out. Her reply, no they are all horrible and nasty and should be euthanased. I walked off. Can't compete with stupid.

Not generally. My focus word is watch, not their name. Can sometimes be used in desperation if said Whippet has decided a zoomie is in order. Sometimes I call them each others names or the kids names - in the end I go 'Hey you, yep you are the one I'm talking to' Amazingly the usually do know who I am talking to! I have used their name then come in a paniced tone when a snake was close by - snapped them to attention.

It doesn't matter what breed or cross breed you have. If you follow the general rules about feeling ribs, no bones sticking out at all angles and no ribs buried in inches of fat, it shouldn't be too hard. At worst your dog may be a few kg's off ideal (for the average medium sized dog), but should still be close to their correct weight. I find it a little frustrating that the average Joe Blow finds it so hard to get their dog at a healthy weight - IT ISN'T THAT HARD! You are in control of the food- reduce it if they are overweight! I find it more frustraing that many people think fat dogs are the correct weight.

The dilution rate I have for Malaseb is 1ml to 30mls of warm water, I have seen other dilutions though. It works well on my Staffords ears.

Weatherbeeta Type Coats - Cleaning Tips?
OSoSwift replied to Alyosha's topic in General Dog Discussion
I throw them in the wash. My stafford had his 7 years I think before the binding and straps started to disintergrate -
Wandering dogs on small acerages are one of the most annoying things around. Also very dangerous. If I catch a dog worrying or killing stock, they are gone - no second chances. If a dog wanders in I will capture and try to contact the owner so they can pick it up. Next time they go straight to the pound, if they are found again - bye bye dog. If my dogs roamed worried stock and got shot I would be very angry at myself for allowing it to happen. Our Stafford never goes anywhere and even if he tried wouldn't get far. The Whippets are only outside with us, then either inside or my dog runs which are escape proof. Build him an enclosure/yard that he can be in when you can't watch, then have him out with you when you can. Less stress that way and less likely to end badly - MVA, Bait, Snake, shot by neighbour

No worries, I couldn't find them the first time I looked either! Rommi is very comfortable in hers and has worn it for a couple of 5 hour trips with no worries.

Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
OSoSwift replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sadly, that's not the case. In fact, these animals ARE targetted by the poison and I've seen the horrific results far too often. In the same year, the Tasmanian Government also released statistics stating that 97,000 wallabies and brushtail possums had been poisoned by 1080, primarily through baiting programs aimed at targeting browsing and grazing native animals as part of forestry management. From The Veterinarian Yep agreed. I think they like to think it doesn't kill them, but it kills everything. Three quarters of our farm got leased out to trees and they do bait-they let us know when. I am always very vigilent as I know the crows and other birds will move it not to mention the foxes. As I said I would euth a dog of mine if it was showing signs - to watch it is extremely traumatic, never mind what the dog goes through. Glad to hear your friends dog made it through the night. I hope there is more good news to come. -
No way I would leave them alone together. It is too late when you come home and someone is injured - possibly badly! Hope everyone gets to where they need to and doggy is returned home soon.

Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
OSoSwift replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes it is extremely cruel I see absolutely no reason for it's continued use anywhere!!! I agree. The argument is as it is naturally occuring in the native scrub (Box poison plant has 1080 in it and I beleive where it is sourced from) that non target species, ie Kangeroo's wallabies possums etc are less likely to suffer any negative consequences. Where as Strycnnine (Sp?) kills all species, even though it does have a successful treatment option if caught in time in dogs and cats. Lucijet is also the same. I have seen dogs treated for Lucijet and Stycnnine and they have survived. Never for 1080. -
Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
OSoSwift replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yeh I was wondering the same. I only talked to her very briefly and the owner was rather upset understandably. (vet guessed possible poisoning but I'm not sure what they did or exactly what her symptoms are/were) I'll let you know when I know more. Lets hope in this situation it may be a snake bite?? Best of a bad lot. Hope she is okay - thinking of your poor friend as well. What a horrible situation. -

Dog With Possible 1080 (fox Bait) Poisoning?
OSoSwift replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have seen mnay dogs poisoned by 1080 and not had one recover yet. If I had seen my dog had taken a 1080 bait and I could get it vomit ASAP I would do that then bolt to the vet. If it was showing syptoms I would euthanase. It is the most horrific poison a dog can ingest. I will NEVER forget the male Dobe we had in with it and his owners were determined to try and treat it - I vowed after that day never to put a dog of mine through it ever. -
The dog snapped at the person BECAUSE they hit it. The dog didn't bite then the person hit in self defense. It is easy - do as you told by the police and the dog won't even need to be used. Here's an even easier one - don't break the law in the first place, or at least don't bolt after you have done so. It is the suspect who is the only one to blame for any dogs that are injured. Dogs have the same rights as a human police officer and any person injuring or attempting to injure them should be dealt with in the same way - or should I say dealt with more firmly as the laws and sentences are woefully inadequate at the moment.

*****Puts hand up******* I am going to be looking for a Commodore wagon in around 6 or so months. Not a new one though!

I have a Puppia Harness for Rommi. I got it from Two Small Puppies as well It fits her really well. I was wondering how it would fit due to the Whippet shape being a bit different to the norm, but it fits extremely well. You can also get a clip on attatchment for the car. Not care safety tested but Mine works well.

What Is Really In Those Dog Chews ?
OSoSwift replied to brightonrock's topic in General Dog Discussion
What's that - a week's worth for a Great Dane? Gee they wouldn't go that far would they!! I hope $150 worth will last a little while with two Whippets and a Stafford????? Guess we will see, but would have to be more economical than buying them in small packets surely -
Hmm interesting story. Makes you wonder what was going on inside it's head doesn't it. Also makes you wonder if the dog was let out, as in, into an open yard and why it was not in a fenced yard?
-
Investigating what exactly?? An idiot belted a dog and it gave a warning snap?? Should of bitten harder in my opinion! They would be investigating what charges can be placed on the people involved. It would not have anything to do with the actions of the police dog handler That is good to hear. To the police dogs and their handlers.
-
Sorry but I cannot agree. It is the suspect who is responsible for hurting the dogs. They have sufficient warning to stop what they are doing before the dog is deployed. Responsibilty for their own actions and consequence of action. No-one likes to hear of any dog being hurt, but the blame lays squarely on the shoulders of the person who strikes out or hits or in any other way harms the dog.
