I have seen two cats fight euthanasia, but never a dog. When animals are elderly they do sometimes take longer as their circulatory systems does not function as well and it takes longer for the solution to travel around the body. A younger healthy animal will literally fall of the needle. I will however ALWAYS sedate my horse prior to euthing. None of my dogs or cats have ever fought. I have had both my Dobes give big sighs and breathes which happened for a little bit after the needle, but they both had end stage dilated Cardiomyopathy and I fully expected it.

I had two Dobe bitches, one entire one desexed, 8 years apart in age. They were okay until the young bitch was around 18 months, had a major barney (they were seperated when I wasn't there) and could never be together after that unless walked on leads or basket muzzles in the car. The would growl at each other if their feet touched, or walked into their dog run doors- to the house - at the same time. I think it is a breed by breed and each individual sitiuation thing. I would never have two male Dobes together either!! I have a bitch and a dog Whippet and they seem to be fine, but if the second one had of been a bitch I am quite sure that would have worked as well.

I was looking at mine earlier and thinking similar thoughts - How lucky am I to have great dogs that I have a blast with and get cuddles and warm snuggles at night! I am so very lucky.

I have had to euthanase dogs and other animals and I have always stayed with them. However! Each person and pet is different. I have worked in the veterinary industry for 15 years and have seen and held many animals for their final journey. Sometimes people just cannot stay with their beloved pet as they feel they are letting them down. Some do not want that as their last memory of their beloved pet. I have at times had to hold very well known animals that I had seen born and then at the end. Broke my heart every time, but I helped the owners in one of the most vunerable times of their lives and for that I feel extremely honoured. Anyway it happens is the right way. The most important thing is that they are guided on their finally journey with love, peace and understanding. The same with how an owner copes and their decisions, they are right for that owner.

Now that comment I agree with. That is the exact reason I changed from DObes to Whippets. Incidentally My Whippets would be fine in a bush treking, off lead situation.

That is totally uncalled for! I have had Rotti's and Dobes prior to my two Whippets. My last Dobe died 7 weeks before bub No2 was born. I chose a completely different breed from a Dobe because I knew exactly how much training and stimulation a young Dobe needs, and also that they don't grow a brain for a few years. I researched a lot and settled on a Whippet. I asked lots and lots of questions and then spent many days making sure I could fit in a puppy around what I was already doing. When I got my first Whippet my eldest was 2 and my youngest 5 months. It was a little bit more organising and work but worth every second. Some times things just don't work out. You had your heart in the right place and you have made the best decision for Hank and your family. I would sit down with hubby and discuss what you would both like out of a dog - keeping in mind you will spend the most time with the dog. Think outside your previously chosen breed. We are now completely sold on Whippets, even hubby tells everyone how good they are! Now may be the right time, just with a different dog. Don't give up, you can do it you just need a couple of different things in a dog than you thought Edited because I have worse spelling than normal!

Condys Crystals ..............has Anyone
OSoSwift replied to Trishm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A friend of mine had a Stfford with feet that were ongoing red, weeping and oozy. SHe also had generalised allergic skin problems. She took to soaking her feet in a reasonable strong Condy's solution weekly and her feet were great with only the odd small easily controlled break out. The very bootm of her toes and feet were a browny colour, but they didn't care as she was no longer sore. She had been on many many courses of creams and pills and it was continually re-occuring. The condys made it a much smaller once or twice a year affair. ETA I also like Betadine liquid as is helps dry the area out and doesn't stain clothing - not sure about Poodle hair though. -

Great photos. I was also wondering about injuries since I now have a sore Rommi after they were running togther and bumped each other - and that was with supervision and they get growled at when they get to rough! Maybe I just need cotton wool in plentiful supply and rimadyl on tap!!! Would love to do it with my guys. -
Our 16 yo Kelpie was fed the same as we ate, including onion, from the day she was grought home until the day she was euthed with a tumour in her dinuses. She very rarely got mnay bones, probably half were cooked and she never ate dog food. To the point that when she had to have surgery for a broken back leg (then 6 days later a pyo surgery) the vet was worried as she wouldn't eat. Mum asked what they were feeding her. It was of course dog food. Mum said go to the supermarket and buy her a lasagne. They did, she ate well. She also had roast meat and vegies while there as well. I think she had three or maybe four vaccines in her life, had two litters, slept on my bed and was a very healthy non smelly dog. Her coat was always beautiful and she had no skin issues. Her only health issues in her life were the broken leg, an open Pyo and her tumour at the end.

Yay for Brooklyn and Bedazzled

Goodluck Ptolomy and Bedazzled - although you won't need it because you are both brilliant as are your dogs - even if they use artistic license sometimes! Have a great time

Well done to both of you. You never have to have a first trial ever again now. Onwards and upwards -

No you can still use the clicker, but now you have her attention. The click can be used as a marker for anything, sitting, dropping, recalling, party tricks. You can click whe they lift a certain leg up to teach them to limp on command for example. When she stops and looks click and treat to reinforce that she has done what you have wanted. She sounds quite focussed and should be fun to train. Keep training and you will have more great things to show people down the track. This is what clicker trained focus and heeling can be -

It is great she is going so well. Just one thing to remember the click is a marker not a cue. So you click for the desired response, then treat. Rather than click for something to happen then treat. Keep us updated with her progress. -

Nope not Beneful, I think it is Purina One Now that I have wracked my memory.
-
Oh what is the Purina supermarket brand called then? Don't use it myself but have seen it.
-
Many years ago, no way it would work with my Whippets. I do somewhere have a copy of one of his books. From memory it was about the UD exercises.
-
Is it the supermarket variety you are after?
