I have one for my aged Stafford as he has spinal arthritis - along with his shoulders and elbows. He is on pred so drinks and wees alot. He sleeps in the garage with access to outside so I got him one from Red dot from memory. It plugs in to a power point. He loves it, won't get out of it when it is cold and I think really helps his back and level of discomfort.

OH how good to hear he will be out of ICU shortly. He will go ahead in leaps and bounds when he is home. LOts of get well vibes Tyson

It can, if it is futher down the track, then it is likely to be not quite as severe as straight after the bite/treatment. Getting bitten by a snake puts a huge strain on all the bodies organs. The kidenys and Liver cop a fair hammering with drying to filter venom, drugs and the products that end up in the urine from the muscle breaking down. I haven't had a dog bitten as yet - have had a cat, but I think if a dog (or cat) has been bitten it is not a bad idea to periodically run a full general health profile to make sure that everything is as it should be. I have a cat that survived Av Gas poisoning - still don't know how! She was only 3 at the time and I always have it in the back of my mind that she may have kidney and liver issues - especially after reading up the problems that have shown up in humans. Granted that is normally after low level chronic exposure, but she was very sick, and a high dose, burnt off skin from her pads and took all but about 10 hairs off her tounge, never to grow back, so I figure it will catch up with her eventually. Oh she also lost her ability to smell. Basically if you are worried, get some blood drawn, run a full genral health profile if it shows up as all good, great, you then have a healthy baseline to compare too.

Hip Dysplasia ,i Don't Know What To Do...help
OSoSwift replied to bridie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep I would weigh her today, then once a week on the same scales to make sure she is losing weight. If she isn't you need to cut her food down by 25% go for another week, weigh her and so on and so forth. The most important thing for your girls well being is for her to lose weight. Not only will her hips be less painful, her heart, lungs, Liver and all her other sjoints will love you for it. Chi's are not ment to be soild dogs, they are meant to be lean and elegant. If she stays at this weight it is more than likely she will also damage her Cruciate ligaments as well as have problems with her feet. Her stomach in all reality is probably the size of a rounded teaspoon of food - Never had a small dog so correct me if I am wrong. She does not need table sppons of food at a time. I am quite flabbergasted that she even managed a cup of food. My Whippets get a cup and a cup and a half respectively and they go on a lead walk for over half and hour a day, then have free zoomies many times during the day in a 5 acre yard - and they make the most of it. -
I Am Eating An Ice Cream Sandwich....
OSoSwift replied to Dame Aussie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hmm I don't share food with them because I know that.......................... They like to eat POO! No way I am I sharing with that mouth - Yuk Lewis likes the cats or Rommi's and Rommi likes the cats - yuk yuk yuk. They don't get smacked ( would like to see anyone catch them to do it) but they do get sternly growl at. -
I know it doesn't just affect big dogs and I know that many other breeds can be affected and I take reasonable precautions. But it is much less likely to happen to a Whippet than a Dobe.

Breeders' Conditions When Selling A Puppy
OSoSwift replied to Zug Zug's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not true. The registration has no bearing on a dog's usability or even its suitability as a pet. Which is the purpose that most people buy dogs for. Registration does have bearing on a dog's usability regarding showing and breeding. I'm sorry, I just can't take any more of this. Good luck everybody....... :D I am afraid I have to agree.......... If you buy a dog as a pet only then you do not need the papaers at all do you, however that does not mean that the dog is a shocking example of it's breed. Pet dogs are put on the limited register because really they don't need them on main as they do not want to breed or show. If my dog was to have puppies, apart form the one I kept for myself, and maybe one for my breed mentor, the others would be going to pet homes. So all the puppies would go on limited register. They do not need main as they do not wish to show or breed. If I did sell a dog on main and it was used as a stud to all and sundry I wouldn't be very happy. I would hope however that I have established a good relationship with my puppy owners. Everything would be out and discussed and in the open. If they were not in agreence then they could go elsewhere. There are many BYB Whippets in my neck of the woods and I have been approached to use my male at stud. The answer was no. Therefore if I was selling puppies they would be on limited register and a desexing agreement as I would not want my babies used over BYB Whippets, then passed off as - the parents/parent has papers and is oh so great. I am afraid that you are not open to trying to understand what people are saying. That is fine, your opinion, but I will have to agree to disagree. -
Happy Birthday Penny - Yep you definately have the ice queen look happening. Rommi and Lewis send lots of Whippet kisses to you

Breeders' Conditions When Selling A Puppy
OSoSwift replied to Zug Zug's topic in General Dog Discussion
What an absolute load of rubbish! Limited register means you have a fully registered, tracable pedigree dog. The dog bought without papers is a dog - not traceable or proven as anything. You look at a puppy, you find out the conditions. If you like (and the breeder likes you) you buy the puppy. If you don't like the conditions you don't buy it. If the breeder doesn't like you - well seeya later. DOGS ON LIMITED REGISTRY ARE NOT THE SAME AS AN UNPAPERED DOG! -

Sad to hear there is no improvement at this stage but I am quite sure Jed will give her injuries a run for there money! Hopefully a step forward tomorrow. -
Lab rat, You are most certainly not alone. I had My older Dobe bitch had bloat and /or tortion 3 times. She did eventually die as an old dog but from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. As you can imagine I wwas alwyas stressing over her. Her abdomen was watched closely and many times a Day. With my younger girl, I was extremely careful and did all the "right things as far as bloat was concerned(same as my older bitch) and never had it happen. It was a constant stress though and I honestly woke up every morning wondering if I would find her healthy or bloated or dead from bloat or from her heart. I found out many things about my dogs lines and realised it was going to be highly likely she would suffer from Cardio. Every time she went to the vet hospiutal I got her heart checked - it was around once a month as I worked there as well. One day after her being off colour for about a month and going through nearly every test available to dogdom, I let her out after having fed and crated her. Her abdomen looked enlarged. I tapped it and it was fluid. I just knew her heart was gone . She had had a full blood panel and 2 vets checked her heart two weeks before. WIthin hours she gained 5kgs of fluid. I took her to the vet - grade 5 heart problem - Cardio! Iminent death. She managed on something like 18 to 20 tablets a day for 4 weeks until I made the decision to let her go. Owning Dobermanns is far to stressful for me. If I went away I had a friend house sit who was also a vet nurse and very aware of bloat signs as I couldn't leave them with just anyone - especially the old girl who developed interesting behaviours after her three bloat surgeries. I was anxious the whole time I was away and had nightmares every night the had died without me. It was very restrictive. I loved and still love my Angel with every ounce of my being - she was most certainly one of a kind and can never be replaced. I will not ever own another Dobe and most likely never own a dog that has a higher than normal predisposition to bloat. My anxiety ended when I got my Whippets. One of the things that really sold a Whippet to me over one or two other breeds I was considering was the fact they do not have documented hereitary diseases over here. I have read on other forums there are some diseases we should be testing for and I will endeavour to do that. But I am MUCH less anxious now than I was over the many years I owned Dobes.

Have re-lit my candle. Still thinking of you Jed. -
My Old Dobe snapped at a March fly one day, then hit the ground screaming with her legs stuck out and ridgid. She also could barely walk. She had partially ruptured a disk in her neck and due to her age I decided not to go surgery, so went conservative. She was on NSAID's and valium. She was also never walked on a collar again and was thereafter on a harness. She did have some replases, not as severe as the first episode. They were treated with rest, valium and NSAID - which after time she was on permanently due to arthritis in other areas. She live a painfree life - apart from the odd relapse- and ran and played, but we were very careful with her interactions with other dogs. I would also second getting the xrays done ASAP. You will get a much better idea of what is going on.

It can really knock them for six. Hopefully as he is now in good care he should get better soon. All the best to him for a quick recovery.

As far As I know - may be wrong- you can lure course, but you cannot course live game. I just don't think anyone has got it organised as yet??? I would love to have Whippet racing, but will have to do it myself as I am too far from Perth to go. I am going to (eventually when I have the spare cash) build/buy my own lure to race my Whippets at home.

hmmm a knitting dog that I would like to see! Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing. People think quite often I am over cautious. BUt I have lived with bitches that have a contract on each others heads so I know just how bad it can get. PF is right, better a bitch with a broken rib, than dead, because that is quite possible what may have happened. I am quite sure that it will never have the chance to occur again as to have dogs intently trying to kill each other is a scene and sound you will never forget and you will make damn sure it never happens again. Rommi and Lewis send gentle Whippet hugs to all of you.

Sorry to hear Poor Tyson will lose his leg. What a handsome boy. What scummy neighbours. Hidind their dogs and refusing to even acknowledge it has even happened. Amy Karma come bacl on them ten fold. Still thinking of Tyson and sending lots of healing vibes and Whippet kisses to Tyson and his family.

Kirislin - don't beat yoruself up too much. You would never hurt her deliberately. I would also do what it took to get them apart. When my Dobe bitches had their one and only blue I knew that the younger one was out to kill the older one. Luckily running at them at top speed and swearing at them seemed to somehow sink in and they parted long enough to give the young one a good kick up the bum and put her in the dog run. The older one luckily was wearing a coat with an extended neck so the rabid throat tearing was not very successful. Ther was many holes in the dog coat and some holes in the dog. I would NEVER let them fight it out. Result would have been one dead dog. Rommi is on light duties and because it was cold I left Rommi at home and only took Lewis to dog training. SHe is Alpha bitch and she tried to pin his ears back shortly after we got home. It was immediately stopped and they have been fine together. I do not leave them together when I am not here due to her dusting him up when I put them in the dog run together.

Speaking A Different Language...
OSoSwift replied to Tokkie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have!!!! I would use English for training/trialling as then if you do get a grumpy judge it wont matter :D -
What a bugger Kirislin. I know what you meana bout the launch with little or no warning. Try two black Dobe bitches outside at night time! Nasty. Maybe from now on when they are together the wear their light racing muzzles. I know they can still give nicks through them and some brusing, but might slow them down bit? Rescue Remedy will not hurt and it can help to calm them down. Keep them nice and warm and don't pander to them too much - try and be as normal as possible (very hard I know). Any extra attention on your part may make them stress more as it is not like normal. Whippet kisses from mine to you all

Definately get a full check up, including a full blood panel, heart checked out, ears, everything. Many behavioural problems have a medical cause.
