Bitches, Rural Properties And Getting Out
OSoSwift replied to JulesP's topic in General Dog Discussion
Is that the case in WA?? All my fences are electric as my livestock paddocks go all around the house, so essentially the house yard fence is electric as the cattle paddocks are. I have never heard of anyone in WA that has had a problem with the RSPCA and electric fences????? Does anyone know? -
Lovely.

I usually ask for tany injections to be given over the ribcage on their right hand side. I can't remember seeing any who reacted to any injection it was normally to vaccinations or something in particular. Edited to change left to right!

What Is Your Dogs Resting Heart Rate?
OSoSwift replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I figured it may be a sighthound thing due to Rommi being the same, but I have no idea what say a Border Collies resting heart rate is, or a Pug or anything else really. To check my Staffords would be completely unreliable as he is on that many heart medications it is anything BUT normal - poor old bugger Oh and do the Greys that are race fit tend to have the 25Bbpm heart rate and say the fit pets have the 50bpm??? -
Meal In The Morning Or Evening Best?
OSoSwift replied to loulouB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mine are fed at night, but they have a chew/rawhide or small bone in the morning generally. -
When I had Lewis in getting his vaccination and check over the vet asked me if he was very fit. I said that yes he was fit, but I would not class him as fit as a race fit grey or Whippet. The reason she asked. His heart rate was very slow. So that got me to thinking. Is his heart slower because he is a sighthound or a Whippet in particular. Is it because he is very fit or fitter than I though? So..... What is your dogs resting Heart rate? What is your dogs breed? How fit would you class them? I.e average, not very fit, very fit, super fit Lewis's RHR is around 38 to 40 and his respiration when snoozing next to me on the lounge is 11 breaths/minute or there abouts. Rommi is pretty much the same.

lol - she would be like Taco is it in yet? Taco its not even touching the sides. Ouch thats cruel! I absolutely agree! I am not sure how they managed the dogs after that, but the bitch never got mated by him again. Poor little mite.

My vet says when a dog's that big, getting weight off fast is a good thing. I'd give him what you consider to be a normal meal for a dog that size until you talk to the vet. But if he's THAT hungry, and at that size, I'd suggest you run a thyroid panel on him. That's interesting as I was always told don't as it can release too much fat into the blood stream which can then go to the Liver and cause problems. I will ask my vet again when I go in next time.

It is much better to be safe than sorry with bee stings that is for sure. I was also alerted to the Whippet stings because they were yelling their heads off, so pulled the sting out and gave them a Claratyne straight away.. The old Stafford just had a very fat ear - I though haematoma until I looked more closely and saw a sting which I pulled out, than gave him a Claratyne as well. I am allergic to bee's so shortly thereafter the bee's were removed after they decided to settle in a guinea pig house right near the back door. Lucky no piggies were resident at the time.

I have groomed a Golden retriever X Shihtzu, she was grey with a verty small white patch, was way longer than tall and had a coat that grew to about 4 inches all over. Nice dog, but odd looking. I have also seen a Lab being mated by a Silky. She was lying down and looking rather bored by it all. I noticed around 4 weeks later she was wearing a bucket and had some tummy sutures. So I am guessing was desexed as I never saw any puppies in the yard. I also got told a story by a lady who had brought in her dog for vaccination. She had an entire Cattle dog bitch and a toy poodle - entire male. They never thought that they would be able to mate, so left them together. She was greeted one day after returning home from work. Her Cattle dog bitch ran to the side gate rather oblivious to the toy poddle who was hanging by his penis and screaming his head of - as of course, you would! That bitch had mismating injections, so no babies.

I have Claratyne and have the dog dose rate written on the packet. Have used it once for each dog when we had swarming bees this year.

Goodness me! That is one large and rather spoilt dog One important hing is to not cut him back too savagely. Losing weight too quickly can cause some nasty medical issues. Do you feed raw or a dry food? If he is going mad wanting to eat give him some raw carrots or something to chew on. I would weigh him so you know how much he is too begin with, then you would probably only want him to lose half a kilo a week. If you have dry dog food Give him a low cal variety - if have it- and maybe start with a cup - not sure exactly! You can always add a substantial amount of cooked carrot or pumpkin to bulk his other food out. Just make sure you weight him weekly to make sure he is not dropping weight too quickly. Good luck sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

We have quite a few White tails, some red backs and various other little ones that hang around. The ones that annoy me are the daddy long legs as they have spider webs everywhere and breed worse than rabbits! I have been bitten 3 times by Huntsmans spiders, two I am quite sure why I got bitten, but the firt time is rather a mystery. However the fang marks that were clearly visible, the distance apart etc it really couldn't have been anything else. The first time it was just really itchy and that brought my attention to it. I have had a couple of whitetails run up my legs when in bed an slapped them off. I haven't been bitten by a white tail that I am aware of. Oh and many years ago we had Brutus bitten by what we beleive may have been a redback as the day after he was taken to the vet for a VERY sore and very swollen leg we found one in his crate. And my Dobe got bitten by something on her bum and ripped into it taking a large amount of hair off, had a huge red lump and it was very sore as well. We presumed it was a spider but not 100% sure

Mine gets Glucosmine tablets, Fish oil tablets and Evening Primrose Tablets. They are just thrown on top of his food and he eats them. He is also on Pred every second day for spinal arthritis and has Tramal on hand. He gets Cartophen monthly and if you go a week over the month you can tell. Oh I also give him EsterC as I have been told that this works well to help reduce symptoms. It must all be helping as he looks better than he did 12 months ago. My Whippets get half a Glucosimine tablet daily as a preventative.

Bitches, Rural Properties And Getting Out
OSoSwift replied to JulesP's topic in General Dog Discussion
Is she only getting out at night? If so put her in the dog run at night and out during the day. I live on acerage and my dogs are always locked up over night as I have found over the years dogs are more likely to get up to mischief at night. So I would lock her up over night, then let her out during the day. I would either put a fence inside the fence with the shrubs, keep them trimmed back or most likely remove them and put trees in as I don't like any hidey holes that snakes can hide in or under. -
Hope you feel better soon

You don't, but you won't be classed as an Ordinary member unless you have a registered pedigree dog. You will have an associate membership, but if you then get a registered pedigree, you can upgrade your membership to Ordinary. Yep that's what I meant - but I didn't make sense!
-
Is a CAWA membership $38.80? That is the nomination fee, then you have the type of membership you require on top of that. If you wanted Ordinary membership it would be $77.50 ontop of that, and $10 Development LevyI was going through the fees list and thought it was this one. Do you have to have someone to nominate you? Can't remember what I did for mine, I don't think I was nominated??? Not sure Do you get a copy of a gazette or canine news in the post?? Yes you do it is part of your membership. They come out bi-monthly. Im not sure how it all works. Do you have to be a member to transfer papers into your name? (im just curious really i will become a member anyway). Not sure, I don't think you do, but you do have to have a rego'd dog to become a Canine member. If it is or an associate dog youc an send them in together. Other than that the dog should be transfered into your name from the breeder, then you can apply for membership after you have your pup's papers. It has been a long time but I think that is how it works.

Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
OSoSwift replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
Hey Jed good to "see" you back. I still think about you every day. I send healing thoughts often. Glad all your people think things are going okay. I can even being to imagine the grief you must be feeling. Don't try and rush any of the stages, they all have to be gone though and in order. I send all of our best wishes for you Jed. Whippet kisses and hugs. -
Agreed - my dogs go mental when they so much as smell one!
-
Great to hear. Well done to Binka's mum
-
What a little stunner. Still need to kiss that nose!

I had a cat on Endep for years. It stopped me being shredded when for not apparent reason he would "freak" and take off. He ripped a hole clear through my eyelid, put a huge scratch across my throat up my arms and various other places over a period of time. Once a freak started because my OH turned off a light switch just outside the bedroom. Anyway the Endep made it a lot safer to have him sleeping curled up on my pillow that was for sure! Glad it is working for him and shows it is some sort of anxiety based thing.

Good Thoughts For Penny Whippet Please
OSoSwift replied to Kirislin's topic in General Dog Discussion
Glad to hear Penny is okay, and it is just bruising. Yes the best way to get a dog off is to cuts its air off. Less chance of being bitten and less chance of injury to the dog being attacked than if thay are pulled apart. I hope you still report it. Oh and I agree - a glass or two of wine is definately needed for yourself. -
It is not unusual for some dogs and puppies to have fairly hairless tummies, but not to the extent your girl has her hairloss. I would be getting a full blood panel including thyroid for a start. By all means change her food, but I would have though if it was due to a food allergy then she would be a little bit itchy at least?? You may also have to look at getting a skin biopsy. And as suggested another skin scraping for mites. I do remember a dog who had skin issues and was itchy and it took three seperate scrapings and that was to diagnose Sarcoptic mange mite which is normally very easily seen. Good luck and I hope you find some answers very soon
