And finally one little Boo cat who didn't want to back down. Excuse her crappy coat. Around 6 years ago she licked a toxic substance off her paws and along with nearly losing her, she sloughed off her tongue so only has around 8 hairs left on her tongue. She grooms herself but really only succeeds in making herself soggy. I periodically attack her with a furminator and zoom groom which she loves :)

Do Your Dogs Stress Your Relationship?
OSoSwift replied to Aleksandra 157's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sometimes, sometimes not. I feed them, medicate them etc etc. We have my dogs and his dog. He occassionaly has a smart remark regarding how I train or somthing or flips his lid because there is no lounge left and they have perfectly good beds, but he gets over it. He cannot stand dog fart smell, not one bit. The whippets rarely do but if they do his whinging is protracted and loud and I end up cranky. Recently on a weekend away they all came with me - humans that is - and one of the dogs was a bit gassy. well the bitching and whinging was doing my head in. I had to walk that dog and make it toilet. I was ready to strangle him. walked the dog around for a good 20 minutes, nothing. He knew I was seething and eventually said hey lets go. I looked him square in the face and said the dogs needs to be here, you don't and you won't again, the dog is not a robot, he iisn't doing it on purpose and your whinging is doing my head in and I am going to yell at you very shortly. It wasn't mentioned again. There was no whinging even when the dogs slept with him in his camp bed. He knows when I am really cross. Once Wilson pee'd on the floor, my fault for not reading his signs. He was carrying on until I exploded and said it is my fault not the dogs, I am cleaning it up, it is once not like he pisses everywhere all the time so STFU and let me clean. So yes they do, but not very often and OH has learnt that it really isn't worth it! Any decisions regarding medical care surgeries etc for my dogs are my decision alone, he has the final say on his. I have a bit more medical knowledge than him so I will give him facts so he can decide what to do for his dog, but he decided what to do. -

I can't believe someone that loved us and knew how much we loved pets, would ask us NOT to get another one.. Surely if they really care, they want to see us happy?? When we lost Dan and then Ollie dog in the space of 3 weeks, I knew we needed another pet to make the house (and life) livable.. There were some that told me to wait and don't rush into it but I knew I needed another pet (as much as he needed me at the time).. Getting a new pet is a very personal thing. Some need lots of time, some need company straight away, no way is wrong or right. I agree if my husband told me I could have no pets then that would be enough to give him an ultimatum, they are part of me, always have been always will be. Fortunately he is the same. -
There will be a dispensing fee, possibly around $15 could be more or less, then the cost of the drug. So 1 ml might cost that, 10mls not a hell of a lot more on the scheme of things. I have had tramadon injections for my dog but cannot remember what they cost.

So.... Picture this.......................... Sitting on the swing chair, lovely breeze, cat purring beside me. The dogs are off playing/chewing on toys and shredding bark. Horses are grazing happily in the paddock, thinking how lovely and peaceful it all is. Then.................. Goose decides he wants Rommi's piece of bark and decides to take it, Rommi nails Goose, Goose screams(he is just a tad of a hypochondriac) I yell. All the dogs come running over. Goose is still a bit freaked and runs straight up to me on the seat and bumps it reasonably hard. Cat arcs up, wallops Goose, succeeding in getting my leg in the process. Goose growls, I growl at them, so Goose goes to slink off. Cat decides Goose is a trouble maker and needs to be shown off properly. Cat chases Goose, hitting, spitting and biting. I take off after Goose and cat as Goose is getting flogged and can't get away from cat. I run after them and growl at the cat who finally backs off, leaving Goose a tad shook up and wondering what the hell happened while cat walks back to me with a flick of it's tail. I turn around and see three Whippets standing off to one side with a WTF look on their faces. I look at all of them and said "well that all went to shit quickly" and walked off with a thin line of blood running down my leg. Some days you just need a cider! ETA - The cat is a tiny 4kg Scrap of a 10yo thing and Goose is the 24ish kg young Working BC!

I really hope you find your furry friend soon. I didn't have my own dog once for a few months, still had my husbands old Stafford adn 3 cats and a horse or two, but oh it was hard, so very hard. My dog had died unexpectadly and I really thought I would have her another few years. Five months on I got my puppy, all was good with the world again. Fingers crossed yours is not too far away :) -

I have three Whippets, 4 cats, two horses, two alpaca, 2 cows, a sheep a goat and a husband and his working dog.......................I conceed he may have just given up somewhere along the line! I think personally if we really do love and cherish our pets then it is supremely unfair of people in our lives to totally deprive us of them. You are not asking for your 3rd or 5th. Thats just my opinion on it though. -

Exploratory Surgery Price Opinions Please!
OSoSwift replied to miss2's topic in General Dog Discussion
Tha is one very cute little kissable face thats for sure. Good that you could get away with one GA for her as well Thankfully he is amazingly good and kept coming to me no matter what I threw at the poor thing! He is now fully healed with no signs of issues and is no longer allowed to sit on the footwell of the buggy as he tries to snap at the grass etc as he goes past. He is on up on the seat out of grass seeds reach! -

Exploratory Surgery Price Opinions Please!
OSoSwift replied to miss2's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know I came in late but. That price sounds reasonable and I would go the exploratory option, it may show up nothing but I would do it. Our young working dog had an ascess come up under his chin. When it was checked there was a track from next to a molar and it was decided it was most likely a grass seed. He was sedated, abscessed lanced and flushed and antibiotics given. There was a small lump after that and vet couldn't decide if it was scar tissue or a residual seed. It started swelling again, he was given ab's. It came up again and a different vet decided he wanted it to swell more and then lance hoping to flush out the seed with the gack. Took the poor dog in and a different vet again said no they wanted it as small as possible and put him on ab's. The lump did not go down so I had to start trying to drain it daily. I was getting puss out but the lump wasn't getting any smaller. He was agaian on Ab's I took him back in and vet decided they would open it up and drain and flush and hope to get the seed out. When it was opened up it was quite encapsulated with a thickened wall, so the vet opted to remove the whole lump - larger than a golf ball. This resulted in around 12 sutures, drains and more ab's. The drain was removed as instructed and then we had issues with a seroma building up. Back to the vet again and it was opened and left draining and I had to flush it three times a day. That lasted for nearly 4 weeks. Finally it healed up around 5 months from the initial issue. From now on it is GA, open it up and hunt for that seed thanks! Not to mention it cost vastly more than the quote you were given! -
Well she pulled up comfortable - can't say the same for myself Over the whole weekend I had two in the showring over two days, two in Obedience, two in one agility trial and two in double jumpers trials. Needless to say I had plentiful nurophen and coffee and comfy shoes! I was very proud of her efforts though. All that coupled with 475km drive each way and being crated a lot of the weekend I was really happy she pulled up very sound :)

I have only a little brag on the scheme of things but I am very chuffed :) My little Rommi went away to a country weekend and gained her last two passes required for her JD title. Not a huge to feat to lots but this little dog gained her first pass after a knee injury that she had - at least I thought - had recovered from. A few months later she re-injured the same knee and it was discovered she had torn her cruciate and it was lieekly she had actually jumped on a sore knee but did exactly what I asked and gained a pass. Rommi ended up having TPLO surgery and although it went well she didn't recover to a level that was expected. I was told that was as good as she was going to get. Rommi was on periodic NSAID's until gastric bleeding and vomiting put an end to those. For a few months we went along with me thinking this was as good as it was going to get and was rather upset by it all. I then put her onto Rosehip and started very regular sessions of Bowen therapy. She started improving and never looked back. This gave us the ability to work on rebuilding mucle and strength. After 2 and a half years we were finally at a point I thought maybe, just maybe, she could go back in the ring. We entered an obedience, an agility and two jumpers trials. It was a 475km trip just to get there. I thought I would be pulling her at some stage as I really thought she would pull up sore. I had my red light therapy mat charged and ready and kept up her rosehip supplements. She didn't pull up sore, didn't get passes in obedience or agility but pulled off two passes in Jumpers with a first place and never once even looked stiff. I was so happy I very nearly cried as I didn't think she would ever get back in the ring and not only did she get back in, she got passes and a title but most importanly pulled up sound, happy and bouncy and loving it :)

Hmmm yep okay, not good, and I agree certainly not good at all for a first visit to the vet. I would have been very unhappy with that display by my vet and he/she would have been told straight and the dog removed without them finishing the consult. Sounds like an Alpha roll not a trun puppy over to see whats a happening underneath. All my babies happily would roll over and lie on their backs as they had done it since being a few weeks old. I got them use to being held and not wiggling etc as they were going to families with kids and I didn't want them to be picked up and turned upside down and then struggle and get dropped. In the end they went like rag doll cats. BUt there is a time and a place and a learning process. Doing that is not right. What you describe is the ideal way of handling a puppy for when Puppy has a new family. There's no mention or sense of fear in anything you have written. Puppy learns to roll over and to have good experiences. All the Vizslas enjoyed 'rolls' and mad leg cycling as their tummies were tickled. Herbert demands tummy tickles several times daily. I see it as bonding time, never fear. Yes I agree. I do wonder if people who saw me doing it would wonder if I was alpha rolling as I do start young so their is minimal fuss but if they do kick up and wiggle and whinge I hold them firmly and quietly until they stop wiggling. The difference is I guess they are in a known environment and they are not fearful, more annoyed at being interrupted. So even if they protest it isn't an out of the blue pin the puppy down experience. If my vet did that I would be annoyed as well. If my vet needs to see somthing I will happily turn mine over, upside down whatever, hold their nose so they are still etc etc for the vet to eb able to see and do what they want to, if they just grabbed them and hoicked them over I wouldn't be happy. The only time I would accept it is if soemthing really needs to be done and the dog was not co-operating and they had to grab, and pin down to give treatment etc then yes they could do what needed to be done, especially in emergency treatment such as snakebite etc.

What exactly did they do to him? I teach all my puppies to lay on their back and if they struggle I don't let them go. I don't throw then on their backs. If I am looking at pups, I will roll them over I to the crook of my arm just to see their reaction. I don't consider either of those things alpha rolling. If, however, I took my pup to a vet they threw them onto their back and pinned them down then yes that would be alpha rolling. I have seen vets roll them onto their backs to check for hernias and give them a thorough inspection all over.

Bad Behaviour At My Brother's Place
OSoSwift replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No I wouldn't then. The only time I have is when I have travelled to stay say at my parents or nanies house (500 to 750kms each way) and then had a birthday party or something whilst there. If it was for a few hours or day I would leave them home. I only take my dogs to the city etc if I am taking them to trial/show. Other than that they go to the kennels or my kennel right hand person house sits them all. -

I have decided that things often happen that we do not have an explanation for. And I also think sometimes we need to listen to that little inner voice more often. They are dopplegangers for sure!
