Really Worried About Rover :( Healing Vibes Needed
OSoSwift replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have seen dogs tremble in pain from back and disk issues. If he is very stoic he could be in LOTS of pain until he just can't hide it. I am glad he is at the vets, around here(much smaller clinic though) if I feel it is bad I ring them and tell them I am coming, not ring for an appoint. They know me well so they know if I need to go then and there it is for a good reason. I hope he is okay sending healing vibes and lots of Whippet kisses to you both. -
Dee your husband and mine could be having the same convo apart from changing the Goldie to Whippet and his childhood upbringing was that all dogs are dirty and live outside and all dogs have worms (he has a thing about worms in people or dogs and all need to be regularly de-wormed, which the dog and cats are anyway, but he will often ask and check that they are done!) We now have two Whippets that laze all over the lounge, have "daddy snuggles" are the best dog ever and why would I want anything otehr than a Whippet?? They are perfect! We are discussing number 3 (which is a little different) I NEVER thought EVER that he would be yeh of course we need Whippet number 3!

Many of the "tricks" I use I actually taught because they help to warm my dog up, jeep it supple and make sure I work the muscles equally on both sides. Teaching tricks is a little more 'relaxed" for want of a better term than obedience. It is less exacting and if we make a boo boo it is no major drama. I am not into dressing up and dogs and having them walk around on their back legs, but others may like it. When I had Dobermanns it was hard for people to say they were awful nasty or vicious dogs when they were saying their prayers, spining and doing bang drop dead among other things. A bow when people clapped always went down well. I think it helps the general public to sway more towards "liking" a dog of they do more trick like behaviour. Obedience is good, but you will get people attention more when they do tricks and cutsie things. I also do not think a dog doing the tricks I do are distasteful or un-dog like. We enjoy it.

My dog naturally offers me front end up and high front leg action in obedience. He doesn't do it at any other time and gaits normally when on a show lead. His weight is back and his front is elevated when he heels, I didn't train him like that he just does it. My bitch doesn't as she does not move that way naturally. Oh and we have no issues what so ever with our left about turns

I teach some tricks, it is usually something the dog has a natural inclination for. I use them so they have fun, can be done in crap weather in the lounge room. I just like my dog to have fun learning. To me learning how to learn is the important thing, not necessarily the exercise they are being taught. I do it because they enjoy it, I enjoy it and we have fun together, quite often it has me in fits of giggles! I do not do quite as many with the two I have now as when I had my Dobe. That is because I only had one dog and no kids so had much more time on my hands. I don't expect everyone to appreciate what I do, I don't expect everyone else to enjoy training like I do. Each to their own. We do it because we like it.

We get that all the time with Maizie, "Look it's blind in one eye" Nooooooo it's just a blue eye... The crowd watching Brookie (Aussie Shep)at the obedience were heard to say that they preferred BC's with tails and they wondered why the owner had cut off his tail. Hehehe, yep we just go around lopping their tails off!

Dry Food That Does Not Contain Wheat, Corn Or Soy?
OSoSwift replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Erny There is an Artemis dry food that is grain free, Not sure of the name though. -
I would contact the rangers. The dog was out the front unsupervised, the cat attacked your dog and is making your cats life a misery when she is inside(which is definately where I would leave her until you get the other cat sorted) If the cat is that bad then it should be taken to the pound.

Jed - love your story!!!! Poofy Spaniel my backside! Raineth - what an idiot! -
Any pet insurer who pays 100% of the bill also charges a $100 excess, unlike insurers who pay out 80%, and who don't charge an excess at all. So things like ear infections, hotspots etc, a vet visit won't be much more than $100 if that, which means you aren't going to get much back if anything, if you are required to pay a $100 excess. However if your insurer pays out 80%, you get to claim on every vet visit and get most of your money back. You need to work out the sort of cover that will suit you best. It's horses for courses. Very true. For me, the policy is for the expensive things like Chemo or surgery. If a vet bill came to $100 for an ear infection I wouldn't even worry about the insurance but for surgery or treatment that came to $5000, then I know I am only going to pay $100, rather than $1000 with a policy that only pays 80%. YEp that was my thinking as well. If I get a few thousand dollar snake bite it will only cost me $100, not 20% of a few thousand. I personally got it to cover the big things ie Snake bites, broken bones, stitch up etc.

Vaccination In Frontline Site?
OSoSwift replied to Bonnie Pup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
vaccines can be given anywhere. The neck is the easiest place. When I was showing my previous bitch I asked for any needles to be given over the ribs on the off show side. That way if there was a small reaction (or big) she didn't look like she had a funny humpy topline. -

What's Another Breed Selection Thread? Hehe.
OSoSwift replied to tianakaesha's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ah okay no worries. I mustn't have read correctly. Depending on wether they like the breed a Whippet may be what they are after. Not all like retrieving things, but both mine do one is as bad as my BIL's Border Collie. They will nick off after bunnies and things and the recall does need to be trained from day dot. They are however great with kids, very quiet in the house, no smell, very small amount of coat loss. They need either a good lead walk or a 20 minute or so off lead run and then they sleep on the lounge the rest of the time. They do feel extremes of weather, so would need coats and inside in cold weather and inside in hot weather. They are friendly, do not guard and love attention. They are a healthy breed and apart from the fact they feel extremes of weather and have fine skin they are a hardy healthy breed -
What's Another Breed Selection Thread? Hehe.
OSoSwift replied to tianakaesha's topic in General Dog Discussion
Do they want the dog to just hang around with no fences?? or just when the dog would be out with the kids???? My Whippets are always close by when out and about but there is no way they would just hang around if we were all inside (nor would I expect them too) and I am not sure too many dogs would -
I am sorry to hear poor Mia got poisoned, how awful for you. Do you know which poison she got?? Good news to hear your claim was paid out so quickly, one less thing to worry about
-
Ummm nope, come to my house and you will get mugged by two fighting for the best pats and cuddles! Sit on the lounge they sit on you! And I wouldn't call mine stubborn. I do however go on a Whippet forum with lots of people from America (and other countries) and I have to say that the temperment of their Whippets does seem to be more standofish and more likely to be timid than what I would consider mine and others I have met to be.

If he whines, ignore him. IF he has been asleep for say an hour or more he may need to toilet. SO take him out, no playing, toilet, then back to bed. In his crate have toys maybe some chewy things and each time you put him in give him some sort of small yummy treat. WHen he whines do not tell him off or so much as look at him, pretend he doesn't exist. He only comes out/gets attention when quiet (unless of course he has been asleep and woken up and cried to tell you he needs to toilet!) Check out all Pers's link as well - lots of info there ;)

Puppy With Suspected Parvo - Only Had Him 7 Days!
OSoSwift replied to erikajayne's topic in Puppy Chat
Whilst I believe it is a very good idea and good for breeder relations, if I deem my puppy needs to go to a vet I take it. I would not just take a lay persons opinion over my vet whom I trust implicitly. I would hope your breeder was just having an off day. I would still enderavour ro keep contact going, photos etc. And ask their opinion about things as they do have lots of knowledge. If it is potentially life threatening though do as you have done already. -
Why Do People Want To Breed Their Pet Dog?
OSoSwift replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep I think that you are correct and I hadn't really thought about it in that way before. But I can understand that people would think that way. -
RIP Hugo, Running free at the bridge. My condolences to all of you, such an awful thing to go through.
-
Oh your poor boy. Sending all the healing vibes we can. The Whippets send lots of kisses and wet nose prods to your boy and some Whippy cuddles for yourself.

Why Do People Want To Breed Their Pet Dog?
OSoSwift replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hmmm my husband is adopted so no medical or family history - looks like we shouldn't have had kids! My uncle wanted one of my dogs puppies because he liked her. I told him her breeder was having a litter. No he wanted one of her puppies. I explained that to get a dog like her you would be better off going to her parents rather than her as half the genes would be donated by an unrelated dad dog! He hadn't thought of it like that.
