Reasons I am not in favour of dogs on ute, that I have personally seen. Dogs hung and killed Dog not tehthered fall off and broken up or killed Dogs badly broken and injured Dogs tied too long and had their back end driven over while still tied on - and survived suprisingly! Dogs suffering heat exhaustion Dogs with burns to their feet. Dogs jumping off while stationary and being hit by other vehicles Dogs being stolen or biting at people and other dogs. Dogs loosing eyes after being hit by a rock or bug?? I do not have a problem if they are adequately contained. I would go sturdy cage/crate. Flooring to prevent the floor heating up say wood panelling maybe? A roof over the top. If a canvas cover is used have it so you can roll up the sides to make sure you have cross ventilation. This helps to stop a build up of heat in summer. Sides that roll down are of course needed for winter. Nice soft bedding for them to stand or lay on

Do you have a friend/relative that you could use as your address to register to????? I would also recommend Microchipping and current ID tag.

I was thinking of getting one of these for my Old boy as we have had dehydration problems with him last summer. I was a little reluctant to buy one considering the amount of dogs that don't seem to like them much. I am may give making one a go, then if he doesn't like it it is a small amount of money and my time that is wasted. I already have the granules, just need to buy some material.

Ring your vet and tell them, they will be able to tell you what the potential side effects are.

MAybe only one is covered??? I hope that is not the case, but $35 is about what I pay for one a month.??? Hope it gets sorted soon.

I have claimed an accident with Petplan and had no issues what so ever. Rommi required around 3 vets visits along with GA's and different courses of AB's, there was never a question about it???? Lewis has had a claim for illness and all so far is good there as well. Only just gone in, they have asked for some additional info but that is it. It is a bit of a twisty one as well.

Great to hear. Hopefully your yard won't suffer ttooo much before they can be exercised again.

CareyJ - I knew she was unwell but had no idea she had died . My sincere condolences to you and your family. Such a horrid time and awful to go through it with one so young. Vadars Mum - I have answered in your thread in general

Found this on their website. They can also cover incase your pet is lost stolen and other things depending on the level of cover you choose. Mine are $415 dollars each a year, so not the cheapest but the cover options I wanted.

What Would You Do? Job Overseas Vs Dogs
OSoSwift replied to chichihuahua's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would take the job and go and get settled in as T-Time suggested. At least that way you will be armed with a good knowledge of your job, life and timetable before you bring your dog over. IT may turn out he is better staying with your parents. Oh and you are a good owner because if you weren't then your dog would not entre into the equation. -
I have Petplan. Haven't had any huge claims but all have gone through quite easily. Petplan cover for conditions up to the maximum you have each year. Some only pay out to the maximum for a particular condition and then don't pay out any more for that condition over the rest of your dogs life. I have gone for budget cover which is $9000 I think??? It meant that I could cover snake bite or broken bones but still have a premium that was not too expensive. I do not get cover for routine things as for me that is just a part of dog ownership so I wear the cost of that. I wanted cover for the bigger disasters that could occur (and after having 5 snakes close to the house in the last couple of weeks I am happy I have it) I pay the first $100 of the first claim for each condition.

Mine din't like that pants in the beginning either. We persisted. Now Rommi wears them but does walk a little like she has a carrot up her bottom! She doesn't wear them a lot. I prefer to make sure she has time out in the dog run so her bits can have fresh air.

Training An Old Dog To Use Crate
OSoSwift replied to sllebasi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I would leave it out so that is become part of normal scenery. Give her lots of treats in it as you are doing, but also put a treat in when she isn't looking - a nice smelly one she loves. She MAY go in there of her own accord and begin to seek going in there as it can turn up some lovely suprises. Also if you leave it out it is more likely to pick up you everyday home smells and get rid of the new smell. -
Not sure? but it should! I also am not fond of the rather tall Whippets that are out from time to time. My bitch is on the taller end of the height standard and to most people she looks like a midget. Standard people! Having said that if the overly tall dogs were not being awarded I guess it wouldn't be as common.

As above or a back/disk injury??? If she is acting like that she will quite likely be in pain but dogs are very stoic and cover up pain very well. Abdominal discomfort can quite often look like back pain.

I have no experience what so ever with DS I am hoping that she does not have that and your poor girl gets better very soon. Poor thing with an area affected like that, that is huge. All our best wishes for your girl and for you

Me too! But I agree, not into the flat toplines, I like my curves! Taint just about looks either. A dog with a topline like that won't be able to gallop like a dog with a rise over the loin. That rise is caused by the muscles that give the dog the strength to run and turn at very high speed. But yes, its hard to understand how judges can get past the description of the dog as requiring "a series of graceful curves" to put up dogs that look like their necks are stuck on as an afterthought and toplines you could play cards on. Dear Judges, please stop rewarding the breeding maxim that "more is more" and reward moderation and balance where a standard calls for it. Oh I agree, they are the shape they are because of a specific reason. Take away the shape and the purpose for which they are bred and evolved, they can't do it any more. I also think that is across the board as well.

My female Whippet eats around a cup of food sometimes a cup and half if she has had a bigger than average day. She has daily walks, free running in 5 acres (and running with another Whippet) and training for obedience and agility every second day on average. I am also interested in the answers to the above questions. Some more info would make it a bit easier.

Frustration At Training Classes
OSoSwift replied to cocoa's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
We had a beagle at our classes that had amazing attention and was a very good worker and although sher owner never trialled she was working off lead with beautiful attention and focus. She could have trialled easily at novice level. I am thinking that maybe your instructor is not used with training breeds that can take a little longer to find what makes them want to work. It is good to train around other dogs as you want your dog to listen around distracion, however maybe a few one on one lessons may be the way to get you started. Can you possibly get some one on one lessons? And I second the attention on focus and attention while stationary. Goodluck -
I have 5 & 7 strand plain wire stock fences. The top wire is hot and the second from the bottom. All my dogs have hit it once and will not go near it ( both Whippets lost traction when cornering at speed and crashed thorugh it, so stay away when zooming now). Mine don't try to dig or jump them so no issues there. They are not left out without supervision at any time and are either inside or in their dog run which is chain mesh attatched to steel frame with concrete floors, brick houses and zincalume roofing. My mums crafty BC X figured out quite quickly how to get through the fence and not get zapped. She took to jumping through if she had treasures that she thought my dogs might want. After she left I found a small stash of toys, treats and the odd milk carton! My fences are set for stock as all the paddocks come right around the house so they are high and they bloody hurt if you get booted. None of my dogs are allowed into the paddocks unless by invitation - which is extremely rare.

I use bitch pants for when they are inside, helps keep mess to a minimum.

Hope she is okay, but I am thinking vet visit as well. ETA - they can still get kennel cough even if they are vaccinated. The idea is it will not be as severe, but it is like the Flu vacc, it doesn't cover every strain.

We Have Started Bike Riding With Our Dogs
OSoSwift replied to lanabanana's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have only biked my dog when training for her ET. She was trained to go on the left hand side and not pull. She was taught steady to slow her down if need be. She was never much past the pedals so if I turned she wasn't in danger of getting run over, sometimes she forged ahead a bit, but not often and never pulled the lead. We did see a fox once and even then she steady when told. I also do not have the worry of loose dogs. -
Dog Urine Odour + Desexing And Gender
OSoSwift replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have only seen Lewis pee on his front legs once and the wind was a reasonable part of that, he usually squats, and then when he walks off he manages to miss treading in it as well. Not sure how as he is very gumby in other areas
