Black Hawk - The fish one is similar or slightler larger than the chicken and rice. I could take a photo if you want I have all of them. I feed mine Advance Active, large triangular shape probably around two cm sides and around 1cm thick?? I can measure properly later.

As an aside if anyone wishes to donate the money required for kennels to purchase large dog trailers feel free! I know what I would do, but that's me.

I am hardly defending them I am saying at this stage I will not pass judgement. They may well have done things wrong, but I am not going to crucify people when I don't know enough! I also said that as a pet owner I would question why they were not evacuated as I am sure they will be expecting. As a kennel owner I am extremely cautious. I know what these beings I have in my care are worth to people, I know they expect they are well looked after and safe and I know they should easily expect that. I do also understand logistics, my kennels are not that big and to be honest I never want them to be. Before you go on the "you are only defending them as you also have kennels" maybe you should actually read what is written. I and other kennel owner are extremely well aware of our obligations and levels of care that are required

In my case I am a tad terrified of fire so mine would be out. I collect crates and have horse floats and trailers to remove animals in one go. But I think it is hard to pass judgment when you were not there.

Of course the owner of the kennels is going to feel and say they didn't do enough, Pets died. Peoples babies died. No-one has kennels unless they care about animals, they will forever feel they didn't do enough. They are going to be haunted by this forvever, the owners will be haunted by this for ever. To lose a pet is bad enough, to lose one in this way is completely horrifying. As a pet owner I too would be at least thinking, why were they not out? could more have been done? But I also know that moving that volume of animals is not an easy task. I know that bush fires are unpredictable, terrifying and can move extremely quickly. Hindsight is 20/20 it is easy to sit back and cricufy them now isn't it. I cnanot believe for one minute that an owner of a boarding kennel and animal lover would deliberately put the animals in there care in deliberate danger. It is possible they didn't do enough, I am not saying it isn't BUT I also think it is very easy for people to say who were not there. Therefore I will not pass judgement. Last year there was a very large fire 30kms from me. On that day it was over 40 and the winds were around 100kms/hr. Potentially that fire could have reached my place in 18minutes. Not once did I think I need ot get these dogs out. Was I on high alert? yes as we ended up with 3 fires. I was helping a friend with a cat rescue get crates etc to get hers out. Did I think I needed to evacuate? nope I didn't. but 18 minutes and that could have been me!

I agree it is very selfish and very annoying. Especially when they treat you like you are only doing it to "be mean", people really need to think about why some people go to these lengths!
-
I have seen many dogs pre and post and I cannot agree unfortunately. Generally younger dogs cope well, those that lose a back leg cope okay but in older dogs and a front leg, never seen one cope "well" yet.

Lots of good ideas, can the possibly have access to a garage r shed? I find that any dogs I have in the kennels, even if they come in with fly bites seems to heal quickly as they have access to inside the kennels and the flies seem to back off when they are inside. I have used zinc cream to heal them with repel-x sprayed over the top but that would be no good if one is licking the otehr ears. The repel-x may stop pup licking though as it is stinky - like citronella.

Firstly I am very very sorry this has happened to your boy. Its is awful and not a good decision to be made either way. I have worked in Vet hospitals for a long time, and am now retired and have my own kennels. If I would personally amputate would also be helped along by if it was a front or back leg. Things that would help me make my decision. What age is the dog? If older, no I would not. They take a reasonable amount of time to adjust and if they are older it is harder for them, plus if they are older they will have some degree of joint issues even if it is not apparent at this time What size is the dog? Smaller the dog the more likely I would do it Big or Giant dog I wouldn't. What is the long term prognosis if I do amputate? if I do chemo/radiation? I have seen a number of dogs have a limb amputated then go on to have the cancer show up in their chests even when chest xrays done prior to amputation are clean etc. How much time does my breed realistically have left? If you have a 12yo dog who is of a breed where the average life span is 14 is the pain and recovery time worth it for a dog who may pass away from "old age" within 1 to 2 years??? There are many procedures I would not put my animals through due to seeing the outcomes from working in the industry. This has helped shaped how my decisions are made. Many people do not see that so they base their decisions on what information they have. I hope I have helped you with your decision making in some way. It is a very personal decision and there is no correct answer as you will do the very best for your boy and your family. I wish you the very best of luck and good prognosis'

The are dipshits thats whats wrong with them!

Oh and mine are fed in the evening but the actual time can be anywhere between 6pm and 2 am if I fall asleep on the lounge!
-
Mine get fed once a day with something small in the morning sometimes, not every day. Unfortunately many people treat working dogs like machinery not animals and the way some of them are treated is horrible. I have seen extremely skinny work dogs because the owner believes they need to be hungry to work hard - ie herding is part of their prey drive. As a kid our work dog slept inside, ate what we did, and very occasionally had to be put in a strict diet because she was getting fat - 3 weeks working soon stripped it off :) She was an exceptional working dog and pet and came on family holidays and the works. Our own work dog is also part of the family, plays with the kids, goes everywhere with his master - generally running everywhere - and is also an extremely fit and brilliant sheep dog. He is fed once a day as he often works first thing in the morning and I don't want to run him on a full stomach. He is fed mainly super premium dry and bones/scraps and whatever poo he hoovers. We believe a dog must be in the peak of condition to work effectively, for long consistent periods of time and to avoid injury. I couldn't and wouldn't work like that dog does happily and without quitting.

I haven't seen them but considering how much stupid there is around I would assume there would always be one who thinks a little bit won't hurt regardless of collar or not

Can you put them inside?

*help Needed* Training And Boarding Near Sydney
OSoSwift replied to Wayne H's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yep this is why I do not train dogs that board with me. All of the dogs that board learn very quickly what I tolerate and don't and within days are in routine and do exactly as I ask - a vast majority fo the time. I rarely have issues. As soon as their owner turns up they go back to barking, lunging, pulling, leaping around and all over people and going off. The owner needs to train the dog. I can do it but it doesn't mean to say the dog will be any better when it goes home. -
If that is so I will looka round I think, especially for the boys.
-
Sorry so you did, I misread :)

Petplan covers a dog for a long term ilnees for the life of the dog. So they pay out on claims to the max each year, but will pay for the life of the dog on a condition not only up to the limit on that condition once. I hope I make sense................

Anyone Ever Ordered From Whelpingsupplies.com.au?
OSoSwift replied to fuzzy82's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have ordered through them with no issues. If you have ordered toys via the above link then yes it willt ake a decent amount of time to recieve them. -
I know of at least one dog that had snuck into a ute and hidden and the owner didn't know. He went back to the car after half an hour and the dog was in a very bad way. He raced to use after soaking her to try and get her temp down and he was totally distraught. I still have tears remembering that day. Accidents can happen.

Small dogs can be prone to suffering from hypoglycaemia if fed once a day. I was always taught they should have two feeds a day. Even if one is a small bone or treat or whatever. I feed my whippets once a day as such but they often get a bone or treat or something in the morning. If I don't one will vomit bile, the other two are fine.

Video: Baby Tries To Take Bone From Golden Retriever
OSoSwift replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Kids are not good at generalising. At that sort of age they cannot think oh my dog is good, but that one may not be, they think dog, ooohhh get in its face. My dogs are used to kids and have been brought up with kids. Sometimes the kids went too far and got pulled up by me, never the dogs. However I do no think the dogs should have to put up with having the crap annoyed out of them just because they are good with kids. -

Amen, sistah. I went to boarding school, if you snoozed you lost and you learnt if you didn't want to lose it you would do what it takes to protect it. Ask anyone who has tried to take my food, they never do it twice :)
