What Can You Do If Your Dog Eats Cooked Bones?
OSoSwift replied to skip's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would give him tinned food, not bones or dry food you want his poop to be as soft as it can be. They can form very ahrd compact poo that is very sharp and prickly. If you have some liquid parrafin you could give him a few mls of that as well. Maybe have a word to the neighbour, are they doing it specifically to feed your dogs?? If so tell them they get the next vet bill! -
Can you feed him or them in laundry or something like that?? Or have a baby gate seperating them while eating??

Sorry to hear that Perse. It is so heart breaking. While I haven't used bird netting as yet I am considering it. I have had 10 from memory, right near the house and half trying to get into the dogs runs. They have a few thousand acres to play on, they can stay away from my 5! Oh and yes pay attention to the birds. All but a couple have been sprung by the brids around here, whenever I hear the birds kicking up I stop and look to see what they are doing. Sometimes it is another bird in their territory that they don't want there but quite often it is a snake.

The weather web page tells me there is a 90% chance of 20 to 40 mls today??????? there is a few cotton wool puffs in the sky and that is about it, so not sure where it is supposed to come from! I really hope we get some rain, we need it.

Oh not good at all! Do you have much for a hibernating snake to hide in??? Our snakes here do not truely hibernate so if it was here I would say they are getting in somewhere??? Hopefully that is not the case at your house and they stop VERY soon. I stepped out of the garage a few days ago, with the dogs, Lewis was on my left and stopped and looked at something, then dropped his head and looked again. About a foot away was a brown snake, not huge fortunately but around 3 foot long. Needless to say I went backwards REALLY fast and yelled at poor Lewis, but it got him away. One thing I do have to say the Whippets seem to stop and stare unlike my Dobes that were into the snake given half a chance! Makes getting them away much easier. Fingers crossed there are no more snakes. Have you considered getting snake traps to leave around fences etc in case there is a snake in your yards??? that way they are contained into a small escape proof area and less of a problem for your dogs - unless the dogs would rip open a small bag to get them????

How Do You Train 2 Dogs At Dog Clubs?
OSoSwift replied to heroeswit's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sounds like a good plan -
Poor child, stupid parents I have no food aggression issues with my dogs, however they are all fed seperately so I know exactly what they are getting, they are fed after the kids go to be. I have no doubt the kids could feed them with no issues, and I am sure the could remove something from them. Personally I feel to feed them all together is putting stress on the pack dynamiics that doesn't need to be there. The same with taking food off them just for the sake of it. If I really need to get something off them I can but I don't see the advantage in doing it often as a training exercise and therefore making their food potentially more highly guarded as a result. I will trade wth something else, or if I have to remove it I will add something yummy as a reward. My dog also know and respond to leave itsi will stop eating something and back off. If what they have they can eat, it is immediately returned to them.

She was all a bit over the photos as I had taken a couple with the kids prior, she was like just give me the food already!!! Brutus was a bit forward as he had got up and wanted the food off my head being the mega pig he is. Lewis I think was the only one who stayed still! They has fun and it wasn't too hot which was good. Rommi says thank you all for your birthday wishes

I actually had a piece of dog sausage on my head to try and keep their attention in that one The things we do! I always try to get a group shot of the dogs, especially the old fella as each day is a blessing with him. He is 15 in June :D

totally agree. Mine do short bursts of heeling then I may rest them, do something else or swap dogs. I do not interefere with any of the other classes but do pop into my actual class level from time to time. My favourite saying is heeling (in a trial) is not a group exercise -
A group shot

My little girl is three today. It does not seem like I got her three years ago. She got given a skineez toy - no stuffing!- a must for the master de-stuffer! Being a bit of a bad mum I forgot to buy her some frosty paws ice cream, so they had dog sausage instead. No-one complained!! So Happy third birthday my little brindle rocket, here is to many many more together

If it is not too painful try and express it, ideally in the container they get washed in - probably not a good idea if you use your bath!!!!! They can rupture quite quickly once they get swollen. If you can express it and she is not to sore I would leave it until tomorrow.

Hope your horse is okay soon Mira - I had one that everyday (twice daily) when I went to the paddock to rug/unrug and feed I tool a bucket that had purple spray, betadine, cotton wool and vetwrap. I am sad to say I quite often needed it!!! He had midday zoomies that involves overreaching on his heels. He wore bell boots but sometimes they wouls be shreded and I would be bandaging AGAIN! Those dogs and their middle fingers - I swear they really do do it!! I have seen it with my own eyes!

Thants what I would suggest, visit and upholsterer and get some holes put into the back seat buddy. I ahve a cheaper on that isn't a sling - but I also have two legged kids on the backseat so can't use it like that anyway. It has holes with velcro so the hole is only open enough for the seat belt thing to go trhough but once the velcro is hut not much sand gets through. We had the same problem with our first so called Backseat Buddy. It had no holes in it so we had a real problem. We then bought another one that has holes in it for the buckle/clasp to come through and now our dogs are fine - although Elbie has a bad habit of opening the window :D

Don't Let Your Dog Beg At The Table
OSoSwift replied to persephone's topic in General Dog Discussion
What a gorgeous photo. If that was Rommi the container would have been shredded in 5 seconds flat! I think even I would have trouble ignoring that little cutie -
I personally would wait also. If you get an adult now say for example that dog seems to be top dog. Quite likely in the teenage period there will be testing of boundries and dogs vying with each other. This could get potentially messy and the dogs MAY have some issues and MAY fight. If you wait until the dog is at least 18 months then you have a much better idea of the mature temperment you are going to have before you get another dog who's temperment compliments your GSD. I would get a medium or large dog, not a small dog. One miss-placed GSD paw could be very damaging to a young small breed puppy or even adult.

Panting And Seemingly Distressed?
OSoSwift replied to New Age Outlaw's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am thinking it is quite possibly from stress. If you have a thermometer I would check her temp just to make sure it isn't elevated. The overnight stay at the vets has probably helped trigger it along with a GA and a sedation in a short space of time. I also would keep her at home and quiet unless she gets worse or more distressed. Panting can also be a sign of pain in some animals do you think the wound is very painful for her??? I hope she is more settled and happier for you tomorrow. -

I crate one while training the other. I do my own thing anyway and whilst they are in particular classes (now the same on) I train one then the other then swap. If one needs to do stand for exams for example I slot in class for that then go on my merry way. Sometimes I do some agility in the middle of obedience work, then some tricks - whatever takes my fancy really. I do not interfere with the classes but slot in to my class when they happen to be doing something I wish to do. -
Okay Let me find some. Dallas Morgan Colby Tonic Ashton Carson Curtis Baxter Utah Higgins (but that would be because I am a HUGE Magnum PI fan ) Rush

Top 10 Surgically Removed From Pets
OSoSwift replied to dogbesotted's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Interesting list. Things I have seen include Tampons Parts of a Kong Parts of a ball River pebbles Half a towelling dressing gown - dog did survive, but just and lost around 60cm of his intestines. He was a newly graduated Guide Dog. One persons comment was - a Guide dog aren't they supposed to be smart?? Very very hard pieces of faeces, high up and like rocks. Lamb verterbrae bones Sand corn cobs socks Undies and I am sure a few more I have forgotten! -
Isn't your dog growling/barking and a person backing off realistic??????? Seems pretty real to me when a person is NOT harmed due to the fact the dog has acted the way it has. We don't all need or want dogs that would rip someone apart if they looked like they were going to cause a problem. I remember recently in the news forum a GSD biting someone that tried to attack it's owner when they were out walking. Quite likely that was a pet and suprise, suprise it actually rose to the occasion when required and used it's teeth when pushed.....but wait hang on our pets don't guard thats right....maybe the GSD didn't get the memo. I do not at all expect my Whippets to guard anything but their own butts. My Dobe I expected to guard but thankfully there was no real need to it while she was here.
