Not a dog, but I had a cat on it, smoothed him out quite nicely. I did have to be careful as it was such a small dose he needed and at time had to space the interval between tablets by another day or he would vomit. Without them his behaviour could be quite dangerous.

When my Rotti was desexed the vet said she was not close to being in season at all. The older Dobe was done when I got her, she was done due to a uterine infection which becamse apparent shortly after an emergency ceasar. The younger Dobe's spey was planned carefully to make sure she was in the phase of her cycle less likely to cause any hormonal issues. It still didn't work.

Due to the fact Rommi seems to love injuring her toes, from what I have seen and been told that is what it is, or a sprung toe. Rommi likes to sprain and dislocate hers!! We haven't had that at this point in time though. My understanding is there is not much you can do and they seem to cope just fine. Poor Mr Puck, look after the rest of your toes little Zoomie man

hmmm me thinks I will have to tune in next week

I got a phonecall from the lady who bought my Dobe girls pup. She went for her final vaccination and the vet booked her in for a spey at 16 weeks!!!! I wasn't very happy about it and she ended up getting her done at just over 6 months. While I would leave it longer, she was not in a position to have an entire bitch so did not want a season. 16 weeks was far too young for me. The vet said he would have happily done it at 12 weeks!

Advice Pls On Vaccinations And Worming
OSoSwift replied to Mango's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Because to use a 12month vaccine and sign off for three years is contrary to the labelling insructions so if a dog contracts the disease the vet could be liable. The Trienniel vaccine is registered and tested for three years therefore can be signed off on for 3 years and therefore the vets backside is covered. Yep this is why we elected to use it. Plus it keeps boarding kennels, training clubs happy too. We can be confident when we tell people they are covered for 3 years and won't need another. If people want to use the annual vacc triennially, we're happy to do that too. One company is soon to have a vaccine which doesn't have a set time in it's registration, but rather, it's open to vet's discretion, in line with the new protocol. So I think this means that however the vet choses to use it (within a 3 year period I think??) then they are covered. I'm not 100% sure whether it's only up to 3 years or if you could use it say ever 7 years with cover, but hopefully will find out more soon. Yep as I attend training at our local dog club my dog has to be vaccinated and my vet will not sign off on a 12month vaccine for 3 years. The new vacc sounds interesting Stormy. Erny it would seem sensible to test the current 12 monthvaccine to see if immunity lasts for a longer peoriod but that would be too simple, don't you know you need the experts to come up with all the long winded expensive ways of doing things!! I do know the parvo in the three year one is different, I am wondering - due to the fact many vaccinated dogs in Perth have died from Parvo - wether or not the new vaccine with the different paro strain (I believe that is what it is) might be a good thing? From what I have heard samples were sent to vaccine labs and it was a different strain than the one currently vaccinated against. -
Very interesting I am going to look this up. Glad your dog is fine now and I hope it doesn't happen again - very scarey to see.

Yes I have had it to some degree in all my bitches and it is one of the reasons that Rommi isn't speyed yet - among other reasons. All have been speyed by different vets and at different ages. Bitch 1 - Rotti desexed 7 months incontinent at 12 months. Went away after a short time but reappeared a few times before she was euthanased at 3yrs. Bitch 2 - Dobe desexed at 6 years, incontinent at around 7 and a half years. She had Stilboesterol until she dies at nearly 12. Towards the end she had a table every couple of days, miss one and she flooded. Bitch 3 - Dobe desexed at 5 years, incontinent just before 7 went onto Propalin I think? and after inital treatment was maintained on a lower dose until starting on fluid and heart tablets. In the last month she was on these she got worse until in the last week she would walk along and have it running out of her. She was euthed at 8 and a half. BItch 4 Whippet 3 years entire, no incontinence issues.

Advice Pls On Vaccinations And Worming

No vet should belittle you they should hear you out and if they do not agree present their opinion to you as to why they recommend their protocol, then you take it or leave it. I rang my vet and told them I wanted to order the 3 year vaccine they told me that they would not be recommending it and I said fine Dogs are all done with triennial vaccine, excpet for the old dog who hasn't been vacc'd for a number of years now. I might add I find the younger vets who have done their own research are more likely to accept the new protocol, A young new grad and I had a discussion aout it many eyars ago and she recommended that I no longer vacc my older dog. -
It sounds to me like she is getting very very close to her time. It will hurt and you will probably second guess yourself even for a short while after it is done. The only thing we can do is put all of our emotion aside and do what our dogs needs. You are in the position of ultimate sacrifice and love. You don't want her to leave, but would you be happy if you held onto her just for yourself??? We are lucky that we can let them go and they do not have to suffer until the end, we are honoured to be able to do that. I would say now is the time, but I am a person that will put them down slightly earlier than later compared to many I have seen, that is just me and how I do things. You will hurt, it is inevitable, but over time your memeories will change to the good ones.

I will put my 5 cents worth in for Whippets. I have two Whippets and two kids 5 & 3. They all get along well and the three year old in particular is smitten with them. They are quite hardy, even though their looks may say otherwise, they are quiet inside, I don't allow inside zoomies and they are happy to lay around or draped over the lounge. Mine love retrieving and love it when the kids throw balls for them. They go to their bed and do not move from it until after tea has been eaten. They learn't very quickly you enter the kitchen or peruse the table, you go outside. They want to be inside so they are very quiet. I could not think of an easier breed, not major hair issues, when they lose their little bit I brush them with a zoom groom and you don't see it laying on the floor or lounge. No dog smell, smaller size, not heavy so while they may knock a very small child over if they push past they do not do it often at all. Oh and mine are not timid at all, they LOVE pats and visitors and will sit on anyones lap for a cuddle.

Training In Multiple Disciplines
OSoSwift replied to Tiggy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I get the pup wanting to learn, get them focusing then train lots of little bits of everything I want to do ith them. Rommi started dumbell once she had mastered sit or standing still for any small length of time. -
Sorry to hear about your daughter Emery, and sorry that you have to see her go through it. Must be awful to not be able to do anything. When I was 18 I wasn't into 18yo's either!! I went to our Dog club christmas thing, wore slacks - but not jeans, a top my SIL gave me - who has much more taste than I ever will have, and used the hair straightener. I actuall blow dried the old hair, straightened it and wore makeup. The amount of people that came up to me and commented was amazing. Seems I looked different to track or yoga pants, a polar fleece vest or t-shirt and sneakers and my hair shoved into a pony tail. I seem to recognise people far more easily when they are accompanied by their dogs

Lucky dog for having a quick thinking DOLer on the case I hope you really enjoyed your Danish

Where Do You Buy Your Treats From?
OSoSwift replied to silentchild's topic in General Dog Discussion
I recommend the Australian Pet Treat Company. They make a fair bit of the stuff you buy in some pet shops and you can get it direct from them for much better prices. I recommend the delights (semi-soft) the sticks and the jerky. Their dried liver is great too. Here's a link to a related thread on the subject. I recommend them as well, the dogs love the dried stuff. I feed it as one of mine doesn't tolerate a lot of raw bones. Good quality, prompt postage and the dogs never ever say no! -
Panting And Seemingly Distressed?
OSoSwift replied to New Age Outlaw's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Tramal can case issues in humans where they do go a bit off, but not like poor Grumpy, it is a drug of dependence in people as well, very easy to become addicted to. I guess with dogs they just stop it and if the dog is addicted they go through cold turkey???? Not sure but we have Tramal for our old dog when required , he stays sane but does get dopey. -
How Do You Train A Kelpie Its Boundries?
OSoSwift replied to esther123's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Get some roll top mesh panels, some concrete slabs, some more mesh for the top. Wire it all together with a gate of some sort on the end, put the concrete slabs down and put a good quality kennel in it -placed under the shade of a large tree ideally and guess what you have an escape proof dog run. You could make the run a couple of metres wide by 5 to 10 metres long and as long as he gets a couple of runs a day and some training he will be fine. You can also run some snake mesh around your dog run. The more they run the fitter they get so they can do bad/naughty stuff for longer. He needs to be taught and trained and using his brain will tire him out far more than mindless running. -
Me too Stormy. Have been out of it a while now so not up to date but still have a bit tucked away in the brain cells. I loved reading about it because I could and I found it very interesting. That is why one vet nurse severly dislikes me as she was registered and on a couple of occassions I quietly said to a vet do you think it may be something like this - which they did not mind at all and encouraged. It just so happened that I was on the ball on more than one occassion and she hated me for that because who did I think I was. She didn't read vet stuff because she wasn't one so I shouldn't read it either, I enjoyed it and have quite a retentive memory Once was a case of CL in a Border Collie - which none of them had seen and I had been reading about a few days prior- once was tetanus which the vet had already thought it was and asked me what I thought as I had seen a couple of dogs with it before, and once was marijuna poisoning (which once again the vet had already thought it was) as I had seen it many times before as well. I never did my certificate in nursing like Stormy I had done some but decided it really wasn't worth it at the time. I was very capable of answering many of the queries that came through and resent the implication that receptionists are only trained in answering the phone and not much else. The receptionist before me would get the vet to talk to people about Advocate, so yes they are out there, but many of us nurses/receptionists (and now retired!) are /were very good at our jobs.
-
We don't really have a choice we have two hospitals, but there is no contest! Recently two receptionists left and I am quite thankful for that. I ring often regarding heart medication for my dog, and have regular check ups and after 12 months they still didn't remember my name, my dogs name or the medication he was on. The two that are there now have been part time in the past and are brilliant. I ring they say yep, no worries , know who I am, who my dogs are and the tablets they are on. I can ring up about getting more, drop in to pick them up later and they will be done up. No waiting for half an hour to get it sorted. If I have an emergency I just go in, I ring on the way but here is no waiting as long as there is a vet there they will see you. They are not cheap but they have up to date quipment and are flexiable. I cannot stand one of the nurses but generally do not have to see her. If I do I am polite and leave it at that.

My vet just gained $300 for a damaged toe!! The article is pooorly written and encourages people to buy from dodgy people. I doubt the puppy will get vaccinated and desexed and highly unlikely that it will recieve treatment when required. Yeh good one!

Hmm wondering if someone is trying to keep themselves amused???? Anyway build a dog run, I have concrete floored tinned roofed runs and am building a dog yard the momet. 7 feet tall, snake meshed that is buried into the ground. grass. The dog will end up dead otherwise. My dogs are not allowed into the stock paddocks and are not left out when I am not supervising them.
